Great time to plug kagi.com

snowe ,
@snowe@programming.dev avatar

I have. It’s pretty good. I still use Firefox for most stuff, and like 5% of sites that I visit break in Orion, but other than that it’s very clean and easy. I like the side tabs, but it doesn’t completely replace Firefox for me yet. Seems close though!!!

snowe ,
@snowe@programming.dev avatar

Kagi is probably the paid one you have seen but it’s not open source. And it’s way better results. I make maybe 1 extra search for every 30 searches now compared to google where it was getting up to 3-5 extra searches every time I did a single search. Not sure of a better metric other than that.

snowe ,
@snowe@programming.dev avatar

you should try using it. Seriously. I thought the same as you, “why are all these people plugging kagi so hard”. Well, I literally started using it 3 months ago and I’ve only used Google search 3 times since then and not a single one of those times did Google succeed at the search I needed either. Google was so fucking bad that I essentially was forced to make a change, and I’d tried DDG like 2 years ago and hated it, I tried Bing and hated it.

I fucking love not being tracked, not worrying about being the product. I can search what I want without fear of being watched. It’s fantastic. And it’s fucking better than Google. God, google has gotten so bad I literally had trouble doing my job some days. No more of that bullshit.

And a dodge challenger, Chevy Camaro, all of the Nissan Z series and all of the skyline series, the delorean dmc-12, most mustangs, Acura nsx, Subaru wrx sti, the list is literally hundreds of cars long.

All of these cars are definitely too much car for that dude I can guarantee it.

Samsung joins Google in RCS shaming Apple (www.theverge.com)

Samsung has released a new video in support of Google’s #GetTheMessage campaign which calls for Apple to adopt RCS or “Rich Communication Services,” the cross-platform protocol pitched as a successor to SMS that adopts many of the features found in modern messaging apps… like Apple’s own iMessage.

Passengers in wheelchairs can't use most airplane washrooms. That could change (techxplore.com)

Passengers in wheelchairs can’t use most airplane washrooms. That could change::With airplane bathrooms inaccessible to most people with disabilities, those who use wheelchairs have a necessary pre-flight routine: Dehydrate and hope for the best.

The United agreement was prompted by an incident in which a passenger died after her custom wheelchair was damaged during a cross-country flight.

Yeah they clearly just made up that conclusion. At my grocery store you will see the human cashiers just standing there waiting for people to come to their lines while the self checkout lines back up. I stopped reading the article almost immediately because they don’t even justify that comment at all.

These titles really should say “an idiot was arrested for…”

snowe ,
@snowe@programming.dev avatar

I tried the trial for two days before I bought in and completely gave up google. Kagi is absolutely amazing and well worth the money, not just because there’s no ads or selling of your data, but because the search results are miles better than any alternative now. I have over 50k searches in my google history and at one point in my career I would average around a hundred searches a day. I know what I need from a search engine and Kagi absolutely gives it to me.

Collecting hobbies. Idk. I just pick up whatever fancies me at the time. I realize this is not possible for a lot of people, and I’m sad about that, but it’s really the only thing that keeps me going.

lol they didn’t even bother reading the lemmy description. 😂

Same too! I was literally considering the update to the family plan so I could share it. This is welcome news.

Edit: I’m actually going to update to the duo plan. Super affordable now!

“In a .02%” is nonsensical. They meant “by”. So it’s just a fail, not a joke.

Do you take humira or another medicine for it? I have AS too and it’s bearable with Humira for me. But yeah if this research leads to something that would be great

snowe ,
@snowe@programming.dev avatar

Wow. You’ve tried a lot more than me. I just met a nurse in the airport and she said to try this drug she administers, but I can’t remember the name now… she did send me a link to their website though. But honestly I’m a bit suspicious of stuff like this. soleohealth.com/chronic-inflammatory-disorder/

But I mean, if you’re desperate then maybe give them a call, idk. Kinda seemed too good to be true, the story she was spinning for me.

How can you put five different kinds of coffee on here and not put milk.

snowe ,
@snowe@programming.dev avatar

Yeah there’s multiple people in here saying that and it seems like maybe they’ve never actually written Ruby. I don’t think Ruby is a good language for writing business apps in, but it’s incredibly easy to read. Way easier than pretty much every single language out there.

Now if you start including shit like rails, sure. But that’s not Ruby. That a framework and just like Spring or Django or Boost or whatever, it has its own semantics and can be incredibly difficult to read. That has nothing to do with the language though.

I’ve had arthritis since I was like 24 or 25. It really does suck… I miss the days when I didn’t hurt constantly.

snowe ,

Thankfully medicine gets better every day! It’s not great, but it isn’t terrible. It’s just kind of “this sucks” rather than “I hate my life”.

Thank you for your kind thoughts! 😊

Buy a used Herman Miller. I know someone linked a gamers nexus video before, but you really really do not realize how bad most chairs are until you sit for ten hours straight in a Herman Miller, and have zero pain afterwards. And then that chair will last you several decades. There’s a reason they are constantly for sale. Those chairs literally outlast businesses.

The meme clearly isn’t about installing games, it’s about starting them. And I seriously doubt OP is referring to any sort of floppy games at all. They’re most likely referring to many of the cd rom based games that literally were “click exe to start” and they just did. Everyone here is focusing on their experience with floppy games and completely ignoring that there was a time where games did work like this.

snowe ,
@snowe@programming.dev avatar

I’m saying that OP might not be talking about the 90s. They literally might be talking about windows vista or 7. You have no way of knowing.

snowe ,
@snowe@programming.dev avatar

Yeah I don’t really think they meant actually clicking an exe file, it’s just that’s a lot shorter than saying “click the shortcut in your start menu”. It’s a meme, not a diatribe. But yeah it’s a joke so we can just move on. Thanks for the conversation.

snowe ,
@snowe@programming.dev avatar

It isn’t. Just like 90% of the stuff posted here

C came out 4 years later. Not two. And C has tons of problems with it still.

snowe ,
@snowe@programming.dev avatar

It was almost 4 years before the first usb c phone was released and that was only in China. No clue where you’re getting 2 years from. And even then Apple helped design the USB C standard.

snowe ,
@snowe@programming.dev avatar

All that means is that they think certain ports have certain purposes. I don’t think that’s the win you think it is. Why not just have everything be an rj45 port then? Clearly lightning has an advantage in phone ports, as numerous others have listed.

snowe ,
@snowe@programming.dev avatar

Because ports work better in some instances than others? Why don’t we just use rj45 for all our data transfer instead of USB? This has got to be one of the weirdest arguments I’ve seen around usb c v lightning.

snowe ,
@snowe@programming.dev avatar

The problems with type c cables come from the spec that allows every cable to work differently. Did you know type c cables are allowed to work in only one direction? Yeah, they can have data directionality. There are a ton of other issues but I seriously doubt anyone that is downvoting has ever soldered their own type c cable or even read the spec for them so it’s pretty clear they don’t realize all the issues.

snowe ,
@snowe@programming.dev avatar

It really isn’t. The lightning port is less than half the size of a USB C port. 6.7x1.5x6.7mm compared to 8.4x2.6x6.65mm. That’s 67.335 square millimeters vs 145.236 square millimeters. Lightning is significantly smaller.

snowe ,

It’s not compliant. You might be serving eu citizens living in other countries. I’ve had to implement gdpr regs for a US only company. This isn’t compliant with GDPR.

snowe ,
@snowe@programming.dev avatar

I literally had to work with lawyers to cover this. GDPR covers EU citizens across the planet. Doesn’t matter where you are. I don’t know where you got your information from, but mine came from both the law, and FinTech lawyers whose job it is is to know this stuff.

snowe ,
@snowe@programming.dev avatar

If those pharmaceutical companies try to ever do business in the EU they will immediately find out that the laws do apply. I’m sorry but your “missus” is uninformed. You can go check for yourself instead of believing me though. There’s plenty of resources for it to explain it to both of you.

snowe ,
@snowe@programming.dev avatar

huh? that’s what I said.

snowe ,
@snowe@programming.dev avatar

gotcha. I don’t think bun is created by the same person that created node. deno is, and has just as bad a design as node as a result. it honestly baffling that people trust someone to write a language who failed so badly to write a language that they set back the entire world for decades to come.

Can you recommend books with meme culture humor?

No, I am serious about this. I wish to get back into the learning of reading, but as a beginner I am repelled by the intense use of vocabulary, literary devices of classical literature books or intense and difficult-to-follow storyline of modern day fiction. I want to read a book that is clearly made with people like me in mind....

snowe ,
@snowe@programming.dev avatar

It sounds like you’re talking about Calvin and Hobbes to me. They’re amazing and full of funny quips, quotes, and jokes. They’re also super approachable, because they’re supposed to be the perspective of a six year old.

snowe ,
@snowe@programming.dev avatar

I mean… they’re comic books. there’s quite a few of them. but no, not a traditional “read the entire story” kind of book.

How to seed properly and safely? [India]

I heard that in some countries you can get fined for using torrents or seeding beyond a certain limit (Das Deutschlandlied intensifies). How to seed so that no idiot government would get hands on the fact that you are downloading torrents? I am pretty sure I can do this using Tails OS but what else? Is there a safe way to SEED...

snowe ,
@snowe@programming.dev avatar

there’s a lot of guides out there. If we were still on reddit I’d refer to the /r/usenet sub community… Not sure the best resource now… sorry. My setup has been working for probably 8 years at this point with literally no bothering with it.

snowe ,
@snowe@programming.dev avatar

ah, I guess I never got that when I torrented.
