Over 40,000 admin portal accounts use 'admin' as a password (www.bleepingcomputer.com)

Over 40,000 admin portal accounts use ‘admin’ as a password::Security researchers found that IT administrators are using tens of thousands of weak passwords to protect access to portals, leaving the door open to cyberattacks on enterprise networks.

Mozilla have some immunity because they do the hard work and actually develop a browser, while for Brave everything that matters is leeched from Google’s Chromium.

Matrix server could become illegal in such laws.

From when taking someone’s work, improving it and then selling became unacceptable?

In physical world we did not expect IKEA to grow their own trees. In science world we do not expect mathematican to reinvent whole math every time doing something.

People selling or giving away some software and expecting they still should have control over copies they sold are just doing harm. It’s 2023 and some still cannot accept the fact that digital copying exists. Get over it and make money on doing new work, not creating artifical licence to force numbers into being a scaresity.

smileyhead ,

No, I consider trying to remain control over software even after selling it an unacceptable attempt, because of the consequences it makes to what it means to have a copy of some software.

Blocking modified versions with bad things added is in my opinion is not enough reason to turn code from freely usable math into a controlled product.

That’s because having a choice between ad version from random guy and adfree version from origin creator, noone is going to choose the mod. And if Louis want to prevent situations like with NewPipe, there is a thing just for that: trademarks.

smileyhead , (edited )

Unfortunately not Open Source: gitlab.futo.org/videostreaming/grayjay/…/LICENSE

I’ll keep using NewPipe. Their software seems neat, I’ll happly pay for it, but no way I’ll do if there is licence like that.

Edit: They say the licence is only temporary. Let’s keep an eye which one they’ll choose later.

smileyhead ,

saying they won’t use it because the license doesn’t allow them to redistribute the app with malware, or charge money for it

They won’t use it because the licence creates an inbalance of power, so the creator of the app have more control than the actual user. An app/program is just an set of instructions how to do something.

Why not charge for it? If you just copied and not make anything new noone is going to give you money anyway, while taking something and selling after improvements is literally how all buissness always worked. Maybe except mining or haunting.

As for malware, I bet creator of malware won’t be suddenly stopped by a licence text.

smileyhead ,

Technically open source in what definition? Not by Open Source Initiative definition (opensource.org/osd/), not in Wikipedia’s definition (en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_source)…

Public code on GitLab does not mean open source in the same way public video on YouTube does not mean Creative Commons.

smileyhead ,

Yeah, I agree.

My point of view is from being interested in CS, math and overall collective making. I just love computers and want them to be accessible from the bottom as a matter of principle. So I’ll wait until open source app arrive (or they change licence), because I don’t need them as much. But for people that needs apps like those developed by FUTO, it’s a huge success they can avoid Google.

smileyhead , (edited )

That’s their goal. They have good intentions. But it also means no commercial use.

You can’t do “Hey, can you add this feature to this app, I’ll pay you” or “Here is much improved version you can buy from me” or “We give you paid support and help for this software for your company”. Eventually all improvements bounce back to original creators anyway, see: vital paid Wordpress theme ecosystem, most of them being GPL licenced.

With project getting bigger such restriction can be almost as bad as with propietary app. Like, imagine Linux kernel but only with Linus Torvalds having right to sell computers with it or offer any services making money.

smileyhead , (edited )

Also more things now call themselfs “open source” even not being like that. AnyType or Llama AI for example.

smileyhead ,

Source is available to the public under their own custom licence, but you cannot use it commercially. Server side is closed. So you just know there is no malware inside and you can propose a bugfix, that’s not enough to be open source, yet they misleading call it that.

smileyhead ,

From Wikipedia:

Open-source software (OSS) is computer software that is released under a license in which the copyright holder grants users the rights to use, study, change, and distribute the software and its source code to anyone and for any purpose.

From Open Source Initiative:

Open source doesn’t just mean access to the source code. The distribution terms of open-source software must comply with the following criteria: (…) opensource.org/osd/

AnyType is “source available”. Open Source is a term exisiting for many years with already established precise meaning and messing it up makes much harm in a world where talking about computing morality is already messed up with the lack of words in public awareness, as computer software is very abstract and need proper terminology.

Keys, like everything in digital devices, are just strings of data. So if they are on device, it’s the matter where they are stored on the device.

Google and Apple implementations are going to store them in secure TPM chip, basically once written there should be no way (people knowing darker side of TPM can disagree) to get them back. But, if I understand correctly, there is no forced way how to store them in the spec, there can just be a way Google implement it in such a way, hope they add open API to Android.

smileyhead ,

Replace RCS with XMPP, one is in practice only available through Google’s approval while XMPP is a standard created by the same organization that create IP (Internet) and SMTP (Email).

GNOME mouse navigation + I3/Sway keyboard navigation.

smileyhead ,

Something is proprietary? I don’t care, just want it to work…

Kinda hard when noone can make it work or even know how it works besides creators of that propietary program.

smileyhead ,

Swap between KDE and GNOME without restart.

It’s easy on lighter on DEs like XFCE or Sway, by using TTYs. Press Ctrl+Alt+F3, Ctrl+Alt+F4 etc. and start the DE with their start command (like startxfce4).

On KDE or GNOME it should be too, but I haven’t figured it out yet.

smileyhead ,

It’s not. It just has really heavly modified Linux kernel and the similarities end there. Termux uses a hack that was already patched, so if Termux ever update to newer API level it won’t work.

I hate how files, the UI and overall services managment work on Android. I cannot mount a drive, access app’s files and their configs, I cannot change the UI environment or system theme (besides basic setting of app launcher and dark/light), I cannot update beyond manufacturer support and swap OSes like on PC and the list goes on…

smileyhead ,

First really important thing to do is to refuse anything that locks you in.

smileyhead ,

I got a brand new phone and installed Termux a few weeks ago. Because of backwards compatibility of Android, you can install older apps. But Termux was not updated in ~2 years and no app targeting modern version can use permissions that Termux needs.

That is a problem on normal Android. But with Termux and certain other programs that have the right permissions, like the “File” app that came with my Samsung, you can access the entire OS and network drives. Also not what I ment, I see you haven’t used Linux for longer, but it has a concept of mounting. You mount some virtual or real drive to a diretory and then this directory behave like a “portal”. By this way you can for example mount online storage drive as it was a physical and for example install programs on it.

If you root your phone you can do anything. Not true. This is in theory, in practice you are very limited by Android messed up nature and lack of documentation from manufacturer side. Look up PostmarketOS, a real Linux distribution that community maintain. You can see how short is the list of supported phones, it needs to be ported for every device separately and takes huge amount of work. Look up PostmarketOS, it is a real mainline (means without much modifications) Linux-based OS. You can plug a monitor in and there would be no difference between PC and this, can install desktop apps.

smileyhead ,

Honestly I think a bunch of simple scripts would be more than enough.

For guest account all you need is to clear their directory in /home/ every logout/login. If you don’t give them root permission, they cannot mess with the system.

smileyhead ,

That’s basic skillset of managing an OS. If IT person cannot setup guest accounts on Linux better not to hire him at all.

smileyhead ,

That is for kiosk, they are different from libraries PCs, as you want users to bring their software and just use one you picked.

smileyhead ,

I am winning to pay for content I like. But using their propietary app? No thanks.

smileyhead ,

So I use NewPipe, FreeTube, MPV, etc. Until Google block them too, then I’ll refuse to use YouTube at all.

Meta made its Llama 2 AI model open-source because 'Zuck has balls,' a former top Facebook engineer says (www.businessinsider.com)

Meta made its Llama 2 AI model open-source because ‘Zuck has balls,’ a former top Facebook engineer says::Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg took a big risk by making its powerful AI model Llama 2 mostly open source, according to Replit CEO Amjad Masad.

smileyhead ,

Calling ML models “Open Source” is already confused. Because they are not programs, but rather formats, they don’t come 1:1 with the source.

You can obtain a model and train it futher. Similliar how you can get JPEG file with permissive licence, edit it and share it. Having the GIMP/Photoshop project from the image was created from is helpful but not nessesary.

smileyhead ,

Really unfortunetly…

smileyhead , (edited )

I am young, tech-savvy and I started to use discs recently because I finally have money to buy movies and not pirate. Honestly I don’t want to pirate movies I really like, but if they don’t want to give options, then…

smileyhead ,

Not what I wrote. It’s like “I am … and I …”

smileyhead ,

Fixed… 😬

smileyhead ,

They want a social network designed in a way that single company have all control that would be abused after gaining enough users and advertisers?

smileyhead ,

Imagine doing a business if Google one day start to hate you.

No listing on most popular and the only search engine that counts. Most popular browser gives a big red warning for your website. Even with different browser it won’t connect due to Google being the most popular DNS provider. No app on the only widely used app store on Android - the only OS phone manufactures use besides Apple. Your app is automatically uninstalled on >99% Android phones. Your calls gets blocked by Android spam detector. Your e-mails get blocked by Gmail. And besides that, Google would pumps all of your competition up.

That much power over the market is very dangerous and should not be legal.

smileyhead ,

I don’t want next-gen SMS. I want adoption of Internet based and democratic standard instead.

smileyhead ,

That would make the problem worse, it would be just another centralized chat app you need to install. We would get from “what about people not using iOS” to “what about people not using iOS or Google Android”.

smileyhead ,

Most comments about GAFAM, they are really hostile and bad for overall tech.

But take a look at China’s Tencent, that’s what those big tech companies would have been if not regulations. For example Tencent was literally blocking their chat app QQ if it detect on a computer an antvirus that was competion to their own antivirus.

smileyhead ,

Maybe because of the propietary nature of x86 platform and Windows. Publishing x86 compatible stuff for free and with ability to modify can get you trouble.

RISC-V emulators and assembly simulators are more friendly because of that.

smileyhead ,

I’m fine with ads (if they are bearable) or paying for a service. As long I can use the service without running propietary programs.

I don’t want to give money for monopolistic video platform, requiring propietary program, runed by unfriendly tech giant that can turn knobs as they like on what big chunk of the world sees.

smileyhead ,

Firefox solved this long time ago: …mozilla.org/…/change-your-default-search-engine-…

In desktop Firefox there is also a format in which webpage can inform it’s a search engine and the browser would list option to add it in the search selection (Firefox has a selector to choose search engine on each query if you want).

smileyhead ,

What I think is also missing is Disqus alternative too comment on websites with Fediverse accounts. Wordpress has an ActivityPub plugin, but it would be great to have something like this on static sites or other CMS software too.

smileyhead ,

Are there any Linux laptops with AMD based dedicated graphics? 🫤

smileyhead ,

It is Slimbook Executive 16 with Fedora branding. And that’s good because Executive 16 seems like a great machine.

I’d love to see 14" based version tho.

smileyhead ,

This is something different to PassKeys. “Sign in with Apple” is Apple telling online service “let him in”, while PassKeys is storing your authentication data on your device.

Samsung joins Google in RCS shaming Apple (www.theverge.com)

Samsung has released a new video in support of Google’s #GetTheMessage campaign which calls for Apple to adopt RCS or “Rich Communication Services,” the cross-platform protocol pitched as a successor to SMS that adopts many of the features found in modern messaging apps… like Apple’s own iMessage.

smileyhead ,

I can’t agree. What is the thing that decentralized service cannot have?

Imagine theoretical Matrix client with Signal’s UI and Signal’s identity (phone number) resolution.

smileyhead ,

But we are talking about messaging standards, not messaging services.
