It’s not about open source, but free/libre software. Third-party developers being able to change the software is a side effect of who is in control of the software that keeps you alive.

Sure we can do certification and similliar, but we still can’t be sure what’s really inside. Also the is a problem of accessibility. What if the app that you need to be alive is made only available from Google Play Store for “security reasons”? Now you are tied to the will of Google if they want you to serve the app or approve account for you.

What free software does is basically makes a protection from many types of abuses that are implications of user not being practically able to do what developer can.

Miss the times when I was thinking he is speedrunning Factorio.

smileyhead ,

Domain names? Who needs them when you can buy a nickname on rusted platform!

smileyhead ,

Linux kernel is really good at backwards compatibility, better than any other OS.

Software can be bad at being backwards compatible with older kernels, but you should be able to run newer ones.

smileyhead ,

But it’s a closed device with the firmware not being for user to replace.

While BIOS can be updated without opening the computer. Or many WiFi cards require you to load a firmware on them upon boot.

So firmware in the disk is more of a right-to-repair problem rather than free/nonfree software

MS Edge browser wants really hard to stay (www.theverge.com)

Look at that shit! Before it was here are your two browsers choose! Now it’s…how about for the letter A? Suppose a website starts with an A, would you choose Edge to be your default browser?.. then you choose chrome or Firefox, and when you click on a link Edge Pops up with some shit like…Are you really sure you wanna use...

smileyhead ,

Buy a managed Mastodon hosting and call that instance however you want.

smileyhead ,

People don’t know they can disable ad blockers for one specific website only?

smileyhead ,

Yea, SquareSpace really don’t fit this channel.

I believe hosting provider and the software installed should not be tied together.

smileyhead ,

It would work as well as “Do not track me” HTTP header.

smileyhead ,

The difference is that Google is collecting everything, while Apple can collect everything.

Also, Android is not a “device”.

Android and iOS are a massive tracking operating systems. Stick to deGoogled Android and Linux on mobile.

smileyhead ,

It is not about logging in to BitWarden via PassKey, but logging in via BitWarden to other services.

Confusing, but what it means is you not storing password in a manager, but a cryptographic private key.

smileyhead , (edited )

How is Bitwarden having all the actually needed things for free, still developing, be most open and community-friendly of cloud-synced managers, allow self-hosting everything for free and still cost just 10$/year for managed premium???

I bought premium just for the 2FA codes support and recently they announces btw it is free now. Like, buying premium for me now would be like donating, they give me anything I want anyway.

smileyhead ,

It should also require allowing incoming connections. Too much ISPs, especially mobile, are gives one-way Internet now. Basically like having a phone line with no phone number.

smileyhead ,

It is not forgotten. youtube.com/watch?v=vo5glK9czIE

My ISP have full IPv6 support, but block all traffic via firewall…

smileyhead ,

I know why they do that, lack of v4 space and other reasons. Why we need to push forward with such legislations.

smileyhead ,

Linux kernel is huge, I bet it has support for more audio devices than Windows or MacOS, as it is used not only on PCs.

smileyhead ,

Windows as always turn out to be the main villain.

smileyhead ,

When at the backstage to find where people are grouping for protest.

smileyhead ,

That’s called innovation in capitalism.

smileyhead ,

Linux mobile!

On my Linux desktop I have houndres of GUI apps, no slowdowns, nothing running in the background without knowleadge. It’s just a disk space. Programs/apps can be uninstalled with keeping their data, so on later install it’s still there.

And can we stop making separate apps for loyality cards or taxi networks, please? We need to keep programs universal. I don’t want an app for [insert company] [insert name of their “smart” home product], I want protocols and standards.

smileyhead ,

May I ask the opposite? Why use JavaScript client from the web instead of desktop ones?

Most operating systems, excluding Windows, are shipping with decent native and fast email client. They are automatically updated with the system, again excluding Windows, integrate with other apps (for ex. right-click and share with mail), can store messages offline just in case and are overall nicer to use.

The only use case I think of is when using someone’s else computer and you don’t want to remember to log out, because browsers have “incognito” mode.

smileyhead ,

No, it was not about privacy. From privacy standpoint there is no difference from email client running in browser or on desktop, both can have trackers and in both we need to trust the source. There are even selfhosted web email clients like RoundCube or Nextcloud Mail, that I use too but really rare.

smileyhead ,

As web browsers are now free in price, if they are not privacy and freedom oriented the only way to promote them is by nagging and force.

smileyhead ,

To everyone thinking Wikipedia should go with the deal and then change the name back.

It’s like taking money for doing d*ck tatoo on forehead and then doing laser removal, humiliation. No foundation or company should show they are craving for money by doing anything someone would pay for.

smileyhead ,

In practice organizations don’t have mechanizms to secure such amounts of money. It would be a massive cake to divide. Dirty money is dirty money, don’t show Elon Musk he can de anything.

smileyhead ,

That’s a great way to make situation worse.

smileyhead ,

Those devices are a dream of any dictator.

Windows Phone gets revenge on YouTube from the grave by helping users bypass its ad-blocker-blocker (www.windowscentral.com)

Windows Phone gets revenge on YouTube from the grave by helping users bypass its ad-blocker-blocker::Windows Phone to the rescue. A lot of YouTube users want to know how to get around the new annoying YouTube pop-up telling viewers to disable their ad-blocker.

smileyhead ,

You mean PeerTube?

smileyhead ,

But PeerTube is peer2peer, literally in the name. Every PeerTube video is automatically a torrent.

smileyhead ,

Free as in price, not as in freedom.

smileyhead ,

JavaScript was a mistake.

smileyhead ,

Not always 🤞. But most sites should be just documents + suggested styling. It really looks good and is super light.

smileyhead ,

Technical problems created by complicating the web to the point where only one/two companies in the world are able to maintain web browser is not a matter of taste.

smileyhead ,

A world where you cannot access bank, buy a flight ticket, do your taxes or rent a domain name without loading up propietary program on your machine that should be unnessesary.

I’m not against JavaScript as a whole. But those things should not require any additional app, regardles if compiled to assembly and running on Windows or compiled to JavaScript and running in Chrome. Anything above pure HTML should be optional and critical websites (like goverment) should work with scripts or styles disabled.

smileyhead ,

Timeshift is for a system backup, in case your system broke for whatever reason you could get back quickly to your work without rebuilding and reconfiguring it. It’s not ment for backing up user files.

smileyhead ,

I think that for your use case (backing up to an external USB drive) great option would be something based on Borg.

Vorta and Pika Backup are great graphical tools for Borg program, with the first being more advanced while the latter being simplier.

smileyhead ,

You can use it like that, but it’s not a primary focus I think.

smileyhead ,

Okey, let me start the discussion.

What’s the point of sandboxing or permissions on environment for one user?

smileyhead ,

Okey, so why we run apps without trusing developers in the first place? Or why do we even need the trust?

(It’s not that I think sandboxing is not useful sometimes, I just want to see if we get somewhere)

smileyhead ,

But what it mean to be open?

Have you heard of “open” culture or “open” standard that is free to use unless we don’t allow you to?
