Middle aged Progressive; Formerly @roknrolzombie at the bird app. I enjoy science and music - not in than order. I complain a lot.

Alt-text for profile pic: me, a middle aged white hippy sporting a beard and top hat. I don't look irritating.

Late-dxed/IDed friends:

Once you realized you were autistic, did you encounter overwhelming and overloading situations that you remembered "dealing" with much better before you learned you were autistic? Like learning you were autistic somehow changed how you processed these kinds of situations?

I'd love to (and frankly, need to) hear your stories. Please share if you're comfortable 💚🙏

roknrol ,
@roknrol@neurodiversity-in.au avatar

@dave @actuallyautistic It actually impacted me the opposite.

Before I understood anything about Autism I was consistently beating myself up to fit in or to figure out why I wasn't "feeling" the way that other people felt. Now that i recognize my own perceptions as valid, I feel less pressured to fit in for the sake of fitting in. It's not a failing in ME, but in societal expectations. I'm allowed to be different.

How did my comrades understand that they're autistic?

How old were you?

@actuallyautistic

roknrol ,
@roknrol@neurodiversity-in.au avatar

@theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic I still don't.

Since you asked, this will probably not be brief. Sorry.

I have been told that I'm probably autistic, by other people who have been largely self-diagnosed. I agree, a lot of the 'traits' that I exhibit match what an autistic person deals with, but i can read 12 different horoscopes and they all sound like me too.

I have been told that because I think that I might be autistic, I probably am,

@theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic which to me sounds like a self-fulfilling prophecy. A convenient one for a person who might have some other undiagnosed condition (or gasp is just trying to fit in to a very accepting and tolerant group of people.

Do I think that I'm doing that? No. But psychology is some weird shit, that's why with every other condition people are told not to diagnose themselves (or other people).

Being a Jewish person on the Left who is also part of a traditional Jewish community this week reminds me of much of my life as an person.

I’m trying to make myself clear, that I value all life. All lives are divine and valuable. It doesn’t excuse people for their violent behavior. It doesn’t excuse us to wish the other to be obliterated.

I’m screaming. Begging. Pleading. Crying.

From my comrades on the Left I beg you to see that Jewish people are being attacked all over the world now. We are scared to go outside. Not only in Israel. See our humanity.

From my Jewish brothers & sisters I beg that we can see the humanity of the Palestinian people and the desires of so many around the world for their wellbeing and freedom from oppression.

No one hears. No one wants to listen. Me and others like me are doubted. Gaslit. People tell us we are exaggerating. That we are wrong. That it’s all fake.

Just like trying to explain to neurotypicals the experience of being autistic.

It’s exhausting.

Chronically ill peeps! I need advice!

I am having a family emergency that requires a LOT of work from me and is incredibly stressful. It's been going on for weeks and it will continue for at least another 2. I finally have hit a flare, and was up all night in fibromyalgia agony. My stomach is upset, and I am exhausted. It is not an option for me to truly rest.

What are yalls tips for managing flares through crisis, when true rest isn't available, but I also can't afford to incapacitate myself. I am walking a VERY fine line here.

I am autistic, have panic disorder, fibromyalgia, chronic pain, CCI, and a bunch of other stuff.

@essie_is_okay @neisvoid @actuallyautistic I would ask someone for help. It's not ideal, but surely someone there is appropriately empathetic to your needs.

What are my comrades challenged with at the moment?

@actuallyautistic

roknrol ,
@roknrol@neurodiversity-in.au avatar

@theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic Coming to terms with likely being in an abusive (or at the very least, toxic) relationship, while also coming to terms with moving to France by myself and starting a completely new life in a country where I don't know anyone, barely know the language, and have spent so long with just one person I'm not sure if I even want to try to make friends, but I absolutely know that if I don't I could literally spend years talking to nobody but shopkeepers.

How do my comrades slow down their thoughts?

@actuallyautistic

roknrol ,
@roknrol@neurodiversity-in.au avatar

@theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic weed or burning out. Only one of those is pleasant.

roknrol ,
@roknrol@neurodiversity-in.au avatar

@Vincarsi @theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic I can ONLY do things like that if there's another background distraction. Music is generally good...videos require too much focus and it splits my attention too much. But music? With music I can fall into almost any hobby and not feel like my brain is racing.

Unfortunately I'm respectful to my housemates, so it's almost always with headphones, which is a little limiting.

How do my comrades understand the term "regulation"?

@actuallyautistic

roknrol ,
@roknrol@neurodiversity-in.au avatar

@theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic badly. I assume it means to ration energy to slow down or prevent burnout.

That's only a guess.

How long does it take my comrades to do a full laundry cycle? From putting to hamper to washer to dryer/to drying rack to folding to cupboard.

@actuallyautistic

roknrol ,
@roknrol@neurodiversity-in.au avatar

@theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic Actual "labor", maybe 30 minutes. Takes longer than that for the loads to run though, obvs.

I fold laundry when it comes out of the dryer so that I don't have a mountain of it, and I try to do laundry as soon as there's a full load so it doesn't pile up.

My wife does none of those things and blames me for how hard it is.

@fishidwardrobe @jamesmarshall @raantuva @actuallyautistic No less sense than "mildly neurodivergent". (this is not intended to call out the OP - I was mostly just making a joke)
