the socratic dialogues from a world where plato was strangled 99% of the way to death by his umbilical cord

reverendsteveii ,

this feels very “if you kill a killer then the number of killers in the world stays the same”. the thing is, it’s the number of victims that matters.

reverendsteveii ,

The problem, from the government’s perspective, is that there’s no way to only see some of the fnords. If we teach people to recognize Chinese propaganda, they’ll start to recognize American propaganda too. Better to keep us stupid and then control who’s allowed to talk to us in the first place.

reverendsteveii ,

once again - not a ban, a seizure. Steve Mnuchin is heading a group of government insiders who want to buy TikTok, and this bill bans it if and only if they don’t sell. The government has decided that TikTok is a dangerous propaganda and espionage network and intends to steal it and run it themselves. Even if you think that TikTok is that dangerous you have to ask yourself: why is it legal for everyone else and why does our government want so badly to do it themselves?

if this thing is being sold because it’s a propaganda and data mining risk, selling it to a cohort of government insiders doesn’t make me feel better.

Instagram Advertises Nonconsensual AI Nude Apps (www.404media.co)

Instagram is profiting from several ads that invite people to create nonconsensual nude images with AI image generation apps, once again showing that some of the most harmful applications of AI tools are not hidden on the dark corners of the internet, but are actively promoted to users by social media companies unable or...

I guess it’s really in whether you use it with consent. I used one on my own picture just to see how it worked. It gave me huge tits but other than that was scarily accurate.

reverendsteveii ,

I’m a dude, it’s just a clever name. It’ll do dudes, it’s just gonna give you huge tits. What you’re into is, of course, your business.

reverendsteveii ,

How do you think it came to be that most Americans believe that in China you can have your home seized for being impolite?

reverendsteveii ,

your conclusion doesn’t follow from your premise. the ability to live indoors is going to be important to people even if they think the system by which we decide who is allowed to live indoors is kinda shit.

reverendsteveii ,

Can someone explain how you went from “This sub is for news about not America, if you want news about America there’s a whole sub for that” to “straight white men are victims of systemic injustice”?

reverendsteveii ,

being a victim is great as long as you’re not actually a victim. you get to be outraged and make demands of people and, because no one is actually victimizing you at all, there’s no downside!

reverendsteveii ,

who said you’re not allowed here, or anywhere?

reverendsteveii ,

what did tiktok do to deserve being banned, and why is it okay for other companies to do that?

reverendsteveii ,

they aren’t even banning tiktok, at least they’re trying not to. What they’re trying to do is force a sale specifically to US government insiders. They’re seizing it. They want that sweet, sweet propaganda and data mining for themselves.

reverendsteveii ,

you’ve failed to answer my second question, which I believe was the important one: why should this behavior be perfectly legal for everyone other than tiktok?

reverendsteveii ,

I agree with you, but I’m assuming malice because I don’t think that stupidity adequately explains their behavior. I think that, to them, the problem isn’t propaganda and espionage, it’s Chinese propaganda and Chinese espionage where American propaganda and American espionage should be. That’s why they’re not making what tiktok does illegal, and that’s why they’re trying to force a sale rather than actually banning it.

idk how much he’ll actually get considering his damages are a couple ounces of beer.

each member of the class is gonna get the cash value of 2 oz beer * number of short beers they bought * .6 (assuming 40% attorneys fees). Nobody’s retiring off this money.

something an awful lot like this happens with interdimensional travel in Pratchett and Baxter’s ‘The Long Earth’. The basic plot driver is humans discovering a way to travel to the different timelines predicted by the many worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics, and every once in a while as you’re bopping across dimensions from Earth to Earth you end up in a dimension or even a series of dimensions where, due to some sort of historical happenstance, Earthn’t.

reverendsteveii , (edited )

the question is, what’s your frame of reference? if it’s the earth you’re good. if it’s the sun, you could presumably move forward any integer number of years because earth would be in the same place in its orbit relative to the sun (but try to move forward by a year and a day and you may have a bit of a chilling discovery about orbital mechanics). however, the position of our solar system (which, you’ll remember, includes the earth, the sun, me and presumably also you) is not static relative to the rest of the universe so if that’s your frame of reference then you’ll have to move in space and time instantaneously in order to move in time but seem stable in space to an observer whose frame of reference is the earth.

reverendsteveii ,

we generate enormous amounts of excess capacity and waste very rapidly and then simply displace it onto distant habitats in order to keep it out of sight and mind.

In fairness, the other apes also tend to walk a little bit away from their nesting sites before they poop. The reason there aren’t great big mounds of orangutan poop visible from space is probably more due to the fact that there aren’t 8 billion orangutans all pooping at the same time than anything else.

reverendsteveii ,

I keep finding dead things in my yard because of this. There are at least 3 “neighborhood cats” that someone lets run wild. They’re definitely fed, groomed and collared, they have somewhere to go at night. Do you know of any techniques to reduce the impact short of just letting them come into my house during the day?

reverendsteveii ,

Wholeheartedly agree. The only thing I’d add is that I think it’s in theoretical discussions that we underestimate how much a wild animal’s life sucks shit. In the US at least there’s enough forest that if a person wanted to get lost and be totally self-reliant they could take an honest shot at it. I think each of us has had that thought deep down in our secret hearts and, when we do, in that particular moment we make a very frank, honest and accurate estimate about how much fun it would be dying of an infection while lying face down in the cold muck. And this coming from a person who prides himself on being “solitary, poor, nasty, brutish and short.”

reverendsteveii ,

If you want a picture of the future, imagine 8 billion orangutans all pooping— at the same time

George Orangutanwell - Nineteen Eighty Fur

reverendsteveii ,

The vast majority of human waste is generated by a fraction of that 8 billion

to what end do they generate all of this waste?

reverendsteveii ,

that would condemn my rats to a lifetime of constant terror
