Clarence Thomas must recuse himself from ruling on Trump’s 2024 eligibility, Raskin says (www.theguardian.com)

Supreme court justice Clarence Thomas must recuse himself from ruling on Donald Trump’s eligibility for the 2024 presidential election, a prominent Democrat said Sunday, warning that the leading Republican candidate is seeking to become a “political martyr” as he pursues a second presidency....

She is relevant to any case that her husband presides over in which she is personallying implicated in direct involvement. A ton of evidence suggests she is very active in conservative politics and that her views have influenced court rulings by her husband.Their relationship by definition means Thomas has a conflict of interest and shouldn’t be hearing any cases, about then14th amendment or anything else.

I’m not sitting around wishing for people like this to die but I’m damn well not mourning their death. The world is a better place without scum like this man and the hate he creates.

The dude was 85. Why do these troglodytes live so f-ing long?

restingboredface ,

Funny how months of companies laying off employees didn’t make some of these places think that people without jobs might also spend less.

restingboredface ,

FYI here is a site with instructions on how to cancel your prime membership since it’s not the easiest thing to find.

I was able to cancel on the mobile app using this same process.

restingboredface ,

I’ve seen a tesla ‘self driving’ hit the breaks when approaching a bridge. No f-ing way am I flying on an AI-piloted plane.

restingboredface ,

The entire airline industry is like that. It’s part of the reason we have such big problems when one airport has flight delays- they aren’t able to easily make adjustments system wide.

There’s a really interesting video on YouTube about it. Link

restingboredface ,

I second How did this get made, though now that Stitcher is gone their back catalog isn’t available anywhere so you have to just get current episodes ( I’m a completionist so that bugs me).

I also enjoy history vs. But I mainly listened to it because of their series on Teddy Roosevelt. It was fantastic. I recommend it , but I think they cover a lot of different topics so YMMV based on the individual series/topic being covered.

restingboredface ,

Yeah, I’ve found nicer stuff there at affordable prices vs most furniture stores and it’s better than going round Amazon. There’s always 5 stores with identical photos selling what looks like the same thing and reviews are high for one and low for others so it’s kind of hard to know what you’re buying. Finding stuff takes a fair amount of work but most of what I’ve gotten is good.

But every now and then the box arrives and a corner is ripped off so random parts have fallen out in transit and others are scratched. Wayfair is generally good about resolving issues like that but it’s a pain to deal with.

restingboredface ,

It gets worse than that. I live in StL so I got to hear all about this one. The prosecutor was recently forced out of office for screwing literally everything in the office up so badly that all but a couple of the attorneys quit. Cases were getting dismissed or delayed because DAs weren’t showing up to court on the first day of trial, because many times they weren’t being told they had been assigned the case. People weren’t getting paid, and defendants were languishing in jail for months before any action was taken on their case.

The head of the prosecutors office was not showing up to work, apparently working on a health science degree or something and was basically doing everything but her job and she fought every attempt to kick her out.

Things have started getting better since she was removed but there is a HUGE mess to clean up in the STL justice system right now so if this bar owner has to go through the courts getting any kind of resolution will take a long time. I hope he has a good attorney with a lot of patience and tenacity because he’s going to need it.

Couple of issues with this data. 1- People are much more likely to report bites from larger dogs (since they cause injury that requires medical treatment and reporting is done automatically) 2- Any stats by design are going to be correlational evidence and do not guarantee causality so it’s not at all clear that rate of bites by pits are higher or just more frequently reported because they are pits or because they are so common . 3- As others have pointed out pits are more likely to be found in lower SES homes where resources for training, toys and healthy outlets for dog energy like time for long, regular walks and playtime is less readily accessible. 4-Breeds most associated with aggression are most likely to be treated by humans in ways that incite dogs’ anxiety, which is a precursor to aggressive behavior.

I think that pitties are just the victim of really bad press. Once it became common knowledge that they were used in dog fighting, it became part of what everyone “knows” about pits. It creates a self fulfilling prophecy by seeing only results they expect rather than thinking about why they expected to see it in the first place.

I just saw mine. It’s pretty cool to look back through my stuff for the year.

restingboredface ,

Not sure where you get that data but according to Statista the top selling car is a Toyota corolla. Tesla model y is on the list but at #4.

Touchscreens probably aren’t the deciding factor in a purchase but that doesn’t mean that they aren’t a problem for users. People just have to decide what features they are willing to compromise on (assuming they have a choice, and touchscreens increasingly are unavoidable).

restingboredface ,

it’s going really bad. Especially for Disney, who deserve everything coming to them. <

I can’t like a statement hard enough. Amen.

restingboredface ,

“they intend to re-create events not captured by camera using generative AI,”

That’s going to cause all sorts of problems.

I'm locked out of my 6 year old Chipotle account because they now say my email address is invalid when I login. Here is me asking for their help: (lemmy.world)

I also reached out to them on Twitter but they directed me to this form. I followed up with them on Twitter with what happened in this screenshot but they are now ignoring me.

restingboredface ,

I’ve had issues with this in using govt emails too. DOD accounts all have multiple dots based on branch and dept. It broke so many systems and emails never went through.

restingboredface ,

Pleasant surprise. The Justices must not have gotten any houses paid for, luxury vacations or loans forgiven by gun manufacturers.

restingboredface ,

I have the same kind of headphones. They cost $400 (at the time) and now they are useless with most devices.

I also use sleep phones at night to fall asleep to asmr and those run with cables. If my tablet didn’t have a jack I wouldn’t be able to use them, and those sleep phones are a lifeline. Being able to listen to asmr on headphones while laying on my side makes it so much easier to fall asleep. All the Bluetooth variants are cheap Chinese knockoffs that fall apart after a couple months, but the sleepphones are still working years later.

restingboredface ,

Yeah I’ve been thinking about trying that actually. Even thought about trying to rewire the sleep phones to make them permanently bluetooth but didn’t want to mess them up. May try that or the adapter sometime.

restingboredface OP ,

This article is a bit annoying because it’s simultaneously a review of how Twitter was so important to journalists and politicians and how that they basically developed how Twitter grew (dysfunctionally), but also misses the point that a ton of journalists weren’t really delivering great news from it when they were using it.

How many stories over the years have just been a collection of tweets strung together by a few poorly written lines of editorializing? What “stories” were basically just prompted because some famous person tweeted something about a topic or person?

Twitter became a crutch for journalists to use in the absence of real research and reporting and I hope journalists will not find an alternative when it finally dies.

Let’s be honest, congress has been a group of self-serving ancients who would rather dig their heads in the sand than actually govern. I don’t know that congress would step up here even in this case.

I do think that Biden would be forced to directly deal with the court and then that would create a constitutional crisis kind of mess that will make 2024 even more awful that it’s already looking to be.

Hopefully Roberts understands that.

restingboredface ,

Ah, some r/justfuckmyshitup goodness. That’s a sub a miss from reddit.

restingboredface ,

But why though? This is literally the only thing that the GOP and democrats agree on and it’s a totally dysfunctional level of allegiance to Israel above any other nation. It doesn’t make sense. Bibi is a total douche and they are clearly committing war crimes over there. Hamas sucks but should we really be standing shoulder to shoulder with Israel on this one?

restingboredface ,

Currently, Amazon advertises several “clothes hook hidden camera” products when users search for “bathroom spy camera,” an Ars search found, but it’s unclear if the spy cam at the center of this lawsuit is still available on Amazon.

Despite the lawsuit, they are still selling this crap.

The problem is that there really isn’t a line between business and politics. HPs support for Isreal or anything other political issue is not based on the issue itself but on how it impacts their bottom line. They did the math and determined that supporting Israel earned them better relationships with suppliers, politicians and important (i.e. large business customers). This gives them political capital that they use to limit oversight and regulations that would weaken their competitive position. Then they can continue being shitheads to their customers.

restingboredface ,

That’s easy to say, but when every company doing this is also lobbying congress to basically allow them to build a monopoly and eliminate all alternatives, the choice is use our service or nothing. Which basically applies to the entire internet.

A few weeks back I remember reading a comment here from someone on a thread about RTO who said they worked at AWS but had just left. They were talking about all the people jumping ship and how it was making things hard for the remaining employees. It seems like this is some evidence of that, especially since it looks like somebody leaked meeting transcripts to Business Insider to write about it.

restingboredface ,

I am normally really protective with my data but I don’t get the outrage here. If the data is all about how you use the app and the report relates to things relevant to usage that are interesting and is sent just to you,I don’t see the harm. It’s not broadcast to the world and isn’t sharing a bunch of sensitive information (as far as I know). It just seems like a fun way to reflect on the year.

I use Pandora and I wish they did something like this. As much as pandora is all about data I would love to see a report on my music listening with some of their insights about music attributes included.

restingboredface ,

I may have missed this in the comments already but it is really important to note here that the article says the photo was taken using panorama mode, which is why the computational photography thing is even an issue. If you have used panorama mode ever you should go in expecting some funkiest, especially if someone in the shot is moving, as the bride apparently was when it was shot.

restingboredface ,

Unfortunately, old people who have no boundaries and believe it’s acceptable to post photos and details of themselves and others on their public account.

If you have older parents or grandparents online, watch out. Even without an account of your own, Facebook knows you.

restingboredface ,

Sure but they are still maintaining data and selling access to it insights from it or ads targeted based on it to third parties.

It’s being used to target content to minors for the purpose of selling directly to them, influencing their choices without any kind of real oversight.

Even if the data isn’t sold directly it’s still not okay.

restingboredface ,

It’s clunky. Filters and tags make some of that easier, but it’s definitely still hard to find stuff.

restingboredface ,

Which makes sense given the size of Texas. I would think the percentage would reflect the relative proportion of people in the states.

restingboredface ,

A demolition derby game like wreckfest but without the racing. Leveling, gear, competitions are all focused on destroying other cars and being last one standing.

Bonus if some shenanigans are allowed like you get out of your car and fight other drivers.

restingboredface ,

Don’t know how I missed this one when I had a PS1 but it would have definitely have been up my alley back in the day. Maybe I’ll get around to getting an emulator for my PC to pick it up again. Could be fun getting back into those old games again - I wouldn’t mind picking up the old Metal Gear 2 game again.

I too feel old now lol

restingboredface ,

I’d add one more- I set my purse down on the scan area (the only flat surface) to get my credit card out and get the “unable to scan item, please try again”. I try to set it with the bags and get the “unexpected item in bagging area, please remove from bagging area”. If I dont want to hold it while scanning and bagging I end up having to keep switching purse between shoulders or set it on the floor (which feels insecure).

They had to know that women carry purses and don’t always have a cart to set them down in, but they gave us nowhere to set them while scanning or bagging things and it just creates a mess.

Some Microsoft employees fume over the company's open offer to hire hundreds of OpenAI staff (www.businessinsider.com)

Some Microsoft employees fume over the company’s open offer to hire hundreds of OpenAI staff::Current employees point to layoffs and a salary freeze this year at Microsoft and wonder why it’s promising to match the pay of OpenAI staff.

restingboredface ,

I get why they’d be pissed. If they cut staff in their old AI team for ‘strategic reasons’ or whatever they told employees, they should stick to that reasoning and say it doesn’t make sense to bring on a different AI team. Otherwise it does send the wrong message to existing employees that they will just be replaced by an acquisition. I can’t imagine working at Microsoft and trusting anything that leadership team says regardless, but even the fact that they made that offer with all the cost cutting they’ve been doing just says that they aren’t being truthful about why they are doing it.

restingboredface ,

She’s accused him of sexual assault. Several years ago apparently. He has generally ignored it or said she’s off her meds.

restingboredface ,

It’s obviously working. These companies aren’t spending millions of $ on advertising just to have 0 ROI.

I think you’re probably right here, but just want to say that I’ve personally I’ve worked in multiple companies where they’ve spent millions on different things with no ROI. So it definitely happens. Sometimes leaders just like an idea and want to spend money on it.

restingboredface ,

Yeah there’s only a couple subtle hints in the regular game and I think more in the dlc. I’m guessing they’ll lean into it more with control 2 now that AW2 is out as well.

Is it just me, or has the BS with OpenAI shown that nobody in the AI space actually cares about "safeguarding AGI?"

Money wins, every time. They’re not concerned with accidentally destroying humanity with an out-of-control and dangerous AI who has decided “humans are the problem.” (I mean, that’s a little sci-fi anyway, an AGI couldn’t “infect” the entire internet as it currently exists.)...

restingboredface ,

I wish this narrative would get more traction. I don’t get the love for Altman, even inside Open AI.

This whole drama has revealed.what I suspect is a larger problem across tech- that there are product-focused people who are legitimately trying to make tools to better society, and there are people who just want to make money.

Two guesses which type of person is usually in the C suite.

restingboredface ,

Yeah, and that is also scary. There is so little accountability in tech and the excitement over AI is just going to create a new generation of tech bro leaders for Forbes to write cover stories about.

restingboredface ,

Yes, and I will judge the people using them. I know I shouldn’t because even smart people do dumb things and phones often autocorrect to emojis now but when I see a comment with a lot of emojis my first thought is “that is the language of idiots”.

(Not talking about an occasional smiling emoji, more like the people who use more emojis than words. )

restingboredface ,

Yeah there’s plenty amateur detectives out there with time on their hands who will absolutely find shit that the GOP doesn’t want found. This seems all kinds of reckless.
