Exactly! I bought the last Mac Mini with upgradeable ram and got it from 8gb to 64gb for less than going to 16gb factory installed would cost me. After this one is done, I’m not sure I can justify buying another one.

Mindlessly worshipping and understanding the advantage of a truly FOSS browser over one owned by the biggest data harvesting organization the world has ever seen are two pretty different things.

Honestly it feels to me like there are some people here paid to be trolls by Google, because their arguments are so incredibly lame that I can’t see any other reason they’d exist.

realitista ,

I’m okay with this as long as one of the options is

“Because fuck you, that’s why.”

realitista ,

I love hearing one of the guys who’s hogging up most of the world’s resources for himself telling us that somehow we’re going to get a bigger share. Yeah we will if someone takes it from the oligarchs and distributes it like we had in the middle of the 20th century. But he’ll be the first one kicking and screaming if someone tries it.

realitista ,

By the time Google+ rolled around, it had become clear that any social media owned by a big tech giant would suck after a while, and anything experimental released by Google would be killed after a while, so why invest in it?

realitista ,

Use RDX. I use it with a redirector extension.

realitista ,

Yeah gotta wait for the heat on this antitrust probe to die down before doing the dirty.

realitista ,

Your info isn’t up to date

realitista ,

I do understand this feeling. It’s how I felt when I first left Firefox for Chrome. I would check in every few years for about 10-15 years and see if I was still better off on Chrome, and I was. But then one time, it just wasn’t the case any more. I switched back to Firefox and now Chrome feels shitty, slow, and bloated to me.

realitista ,

The saltines are a nice touch.

realitista ,

I have it admit, It’s actually a bit unnerving to see someone put effort into spaghettios.

realitista ,

Firefox is faster than Chrome for me. Theme isn’t an issue for me, but the thing that took me a long time to get where I like it, is getting rid of all the buttons and UI elements and plugin icons that I didn’t want to see all the time to get things streamlined down to where I like them. It did take me a couple months to get everything how I like it, but now when I use chrome, it seems clunky.

Trying to switch tools takes a while to get right and to re-learn. There are some things I don’t like about Firefox still, but more I don’t like about Chrome.

realitista ,

Actually impressive that acting in this POS wasn’t what killed him.

realitista ,

Wow, it’s pretty shocking that they would allow themselves to be seen in something this terrible. I guess this was before Friends had taken off.

realitista ,

Yes please. My downvote finger is getting sore.

realitista ,

I absolutely love my surface go and making a repairable one will be fantastic. I just wish they’d finally make a 512gb version!

realitista ,

I’m still on the Go 1 waiting for a 512gb version ;-). It’s probably not what you want as a daily driver. For me it’s something I use in meetings and on airplanes when I travel. For that it’s perfect.

realitista ,

Battery life is much better on the go I think. Even on my old model, if I turn off wifi and turn down the brightness I can take notes all day. On full brightness with no Wi-Fi I can watch videos for like 4-6 hours on the plane. But when I have Wi-Fi or LTE enabled, it’s probably only 3 hours. I’m sure a new one would improve that by 50% or so. But you don’t want to have more than 2-3 apps open at a time, and you wanna use Firefox instead of Chrome.

realitista ,

Do we really need them more than doctors, plumbers, teachers, etc. though? While I’m for a UBI, I’m against it being enough to fully live off of for exactly this reason. The world doesn’t need a bunch more popsicle stick art.

realitista ,

I like the idea of a “Citizen’s Dividend” funded from taxes on pollution, carbon Emmissions, etc. We can throw a wealth tax for billionaires in there too.

realitista ,

This is a vast oversimplification. A UBI could replace a vast amount of existing welfare programs in a much more efficient way which would have a fraction of the overhead. There are tons of other proposals to fund a UBI such as a negative interest rate. Likely there would be many sources of funding, including money which now goes to existing wasteful welfare spending.

realitista ,

That explains a lot actually.

realitista ,

But does it really surprise you? Sounds spot on to me.

realitista ,

It’s related because according to the study, those are the core beliefs of the people who like crypto.

realitista ,

Okay fair enough, it’s a better description but I think a bit splitting hairs.

realitista ,

I wish they tested some other high quality but not as expensive cables against apple’s instead of the total junk ones. Baseus or something.

realitista ,

Honestly this fixation on CEO salary is a bit silly, most of them are getting rich from stock, not salary.

realitista ,

Renewables are also intermittent and strongly tied to geography. Geography is especially limiting in much of Europe which isn’t particularly sunny, and where much of the low hanging fruit for wind, geothermal, and hydro has already been tapped.

And even if you were able to keep building it, you will soon run into the storage problem which is still potentially more costly, especially when trying to provide baseline power for the whole year, where it’s buildout may have to be many times more expensive to save power for months than a baseline solution like nuclear which can provide steady power all the time.

So, some mix of baseline solutions like nuclear and intermittent solutions like renewables will be needed to completely phase out coal, oil, and gas which provide our baseline power today.

I like that she chose a sexy teacher porn star outfit for court.

realitista ,

Mitchell and Webb need to do some new stuff. I love all of their material together.

realitista ,

Interesting that Sulu is actually the biggest beefcake.

realitista ,

I’m one ahead of you. I bought cyberpunk on sale and only played it for about 2 hours.

realitista ,

At the very least, it’s no better than the alternatives any more. Whenever I put Duck Duck Go up against Google, I get very similar results, other than all the extra ads on Google.

realitista , (edited )

Interesting. I looked it up and found this, so it looks like it’s some hybrid of many sources:

<span style="color:#323232;">We also maintain our own crawler (DuckDuckBot) and many indexes to support our results. Of course, we have more traditional links and images in our search results too, which we largely source from Bing. Our focus is synthesizing all these sources to create a superior search experience.

I’ve worked in this field for 25 years and don’t think that ChatGPT by itself can handle most workloads, even if it’s trained on them.

There are usually transactions which must be done and often ad hoc tasks which end up being the most important things because when things break, you aren’t trained for them.

If you don’t have a feedback loop to solve those issues, your whole business may just break without you knowing.

realitista ,

Yes these kind of transactions really need to be hand coded to be handled well. LLM’s are very poorly suited to this kind of thing (though I doubt you were dealing with an LLM at Chipotle just yet).

realitista ,

I remember using a DEC Alpha back in the late '90s. It was the fastest computer I had ever used by a long shot and I had access to most of the hardware from IBM, Sun, HP, etc at the time. It was an absolute monster.

Also my first connection to the internet in 1993 was via a VAX.

I will always have fond memories of DEC.

realitista ,

I’d pay some reasonable subscription, say $1 a month to the maintainer of lemm.ee for the promise to keep my data safe. To Zuck and Elon absolutely not.

realitista ,

I can’t believe that this is economically viable. Strange times.

realitista ,

I think crossposting is okay as it should take care of duplicates to the end user, right?

realitista ,

I turn off the option to show viewed posts.
