USA Will Invest in High-Speed Train to Fight Climate Change (www.raillynews.com)

USA Will Invest in High-Speed Train to Fight Climate Change::The USA Will Invest in High-Speed Train to Fight Climate Change - US President Joe Biden announced in a speech on December 9, 2023 that they are carrying out the first high-speed train projects in US history. These projects are across America

realitista ,

Elon’s hyperloop was just something to delay and boondoggle the whole California high speed rail project, he even admitted as much.

Senators Introduce ‘Fans First’ Bill Intended to Reform Live-Event Ticketing System (variety.com)

Senators Introduce ‘Fans First’ Bill Intended to Reform Live-Event Ticketing System::Senators John Cornyn, Amy Klobuchar and others introduced the ‘Fans First’ Act to help “address flaws in the current live event ticketing system.’

realitista ,

That’s because it’s clearly something to quell public protest on the topic while keeping their monopoly with tiny meaningless changes.

realitista ,

Yeah I’d really like to see a video of how this moment came to be. Probably AI generated.

Video of ceramic storage system prototype surfaces online — 10,000TB cartridges bombarded with laser rays could become mainstream by 2030, making slow hard drives and tapes obsolete (www.techradar.com)

Video of ceramic storage system prototype surfaces online — 10,000TB cartridges bombarded with laser rays could become mainstream by 2030, making slow hard drives and tapes obsolete::Ceramics-based storage medium consumes very little energy and lasts more than 5,000 years, creators say

realitista ,

Yeah but in about 10 years it will be replaced by something even better and they’ll stop making the readers for it.

realitista ,

This should be the top comment.

realitista ,

Or just put the cartridge in a shockproof box. One that can last as long as the medium. It can’t be that hard to make a really good box.

realitista ,

Have you not noticed any effect from midjourney on your line of work yet?

realitista ,

Someone just watched the latest South Park episode.

realitista ,

I’m still looking for a good self hosted alternative specifically for hosting PDF’s with full text search ability. They all either seem way too complex or way too limited with PDF (no search or preview).

And then there’s the issue of syncing everything out of Evernote.

realitista ,

I’ve checked it out before and it does look like a top contender. I have 2 major outstanding questions/issues.

First, how to migrate? I have tens of thousands of notes in many folders. Not something I’m willing to do manually.

Second, does it allow for mixed notes of text and pdf or images of written notes?

The barrier to entry has kept me out a bit because it looks like a big job, but would be interested to hear if someone else had pulled it off.

realitista ,

How well does it work with notes with documents and text combined? Any easy way to migrate from Evernote?

realitista ,

Yeah I’ve looked at that. Unfortunately they took out the capability to download whole notebooks quite a while ago. Now you can only do 50 notes at a time, would take ages.

Paris mayor quits X platform, calling it a ‘gigantic global sewer’ (www.reuters.com)

Paris mayor quits X platform, calling it a ‘gigantic global sewer’::Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo on Monday announced she was quitting the X platform formerly known as Twitter, calling it a “gigantic global sewer” that was “destroying our democracies” by spreading abuse and misinformation.

realitista ,

Best description I’ve heard of X yet.

realitista ,

Czechs do this too. Gives you time to menacingly rev your engine at the car next to you.

Feds subpoena Ticketmaster over egregious concert ticket prices — A spokesperson for Live Nation, which owns Ticketmaster, said the firm doesn't “feel comfortable” sharing information with Congress (www.vice.com)

realitista ,

Ticketmaster/Live Nation is one of the most blatant monopolies in all of history. They should be torn to shreds.

realitista ,

Sounds great. Only question is how we get paid well enough to live. A question which went conveniently unasked and unanswered.

realitista ,

Good luck convincing companies to change anything that won’t make them more money. I think the only way it can happen is with UBI, hopefully funded by the hoarded assets of the few biggest companies and billionaires where all the money is getting accumulated.

realitista ,

okay I’ll take it. Bill is one of the few that’s actually thinking things through at least.

realitista ,

Not sure why you chose Bill Gates who is the only one of this club actively trying to help this segment of world society and ostensibly planning to give away his wealth. Bezos, Musk, Jobs, all far more deserving of this.

realitista ,

Yeah I’m only in if we get 3 days off per week.

realitista ,

Fair enough, make it happen!

realitista ,

Yeah you’d definitely need one day in the middle. Or Id say even better, a 3 day and 2x2 day work weeks with days off in between.

realitista ,

I did this once on a work trip in the early 2000s where I turned on data roaming to download an important document in a meeting and then forgot to turn it off and it downloaded a system update or something. It was like $7000 or something.

realitista ,

Yeah eSIMS are great for this. You can buy them online and run multiple ones on your phone alongside your primary SIM.

The problem is that most Europeans got so used to EU mandated free roaming all over EU in the past decade that they probably forget how hard they will be screwed in someplace like Turkey.

realitista ,

No he can’t, didn’t you hear him? It’s UNMOVABLE!!

realitista ,

… when the mildly infuriating thing is OP’s ignorance

realitista ,

I know ;-)

realitista ,

Yeah I’d go buy a neon Z just to put it there.

realitista ,

Lol. He’s a billionaire. There’s no end.

realitista ,

Yeah we’ll be dealing with this shit for generations. A dynasty lasting centuries.

realitista ,

In the Days of Olde

When knights were bold

And condoms not invented

A sock was placed upon the cock

And babies were prevented

realitista ,

I am so with you brother. I’m still mourning the death of Palm.

realitista ,

Would make a great Russian money laundering front.

realitista ,

The only reason that anyone has that much money is because of a massive personality problem like NPD. Normal people would drop out and enjoy life long before they got to that point.

realitista ,

Does that mean I will finally get browser plugins on Firefox?

realitista ,

Not in the EU it’s not. It’s law here.

realitista ,

To do this in the EU would mean breaking the law, which mandates 14 days of free returns with no requirement to justify the reason whatsoever, so I’m pretty sure this wouldn’t work ;-).

realitista ,

2 years by law everywhere in the EU.

realitista ,

Okay yes if we are talking about shipping then that’s true.

realitista ,

Before the EU law, in Czechia where I live, most places wouldn’t take a return at all. Most brick and mortar retailers still won’t. So for me it was a big step up to be able to return at all. Losing a few bucks on shipping is small compared to having to keep a whole product you don’t want. It’s one of the big reasons I buy almost nothing from brick and mortar stores any more.

realitista ,

They paved paradise and put up a parking lot.

realitista ,

For me, windows is actually a much better user experience for working with MS office for traditional office tasks. I have Macs at home for working with music, pictures, and video. And Linux for my home lab stuff. They all have their niche.

realitista ,

Yea this is a Macworld article.

realitista ,

There are things in Mac that also make me want to punch my monitor. No tree view in Finder, so I have to open two windows to copy stuff? No titles in the launcher so I have to scroll over all the windows to find the one I need? It’s a nightmare for working with documents. I much prefer windows for that.

realitista ,

Yeah I’ve definitely never bought Apple devices for their GPU’s ;-).
