Just my two cents, but I feel it’s quite irresponsible to post a “how to exploit this platform” guide ON the platform.

Getting used enterprise gear is not prohibitively expensive, but the electric bills balloon very quickly.

At this point, what am I not boycotting? lol

I guess this is the abridged no-go list:

    • Nestle (duh)
    • BP (still haven’t forgiven them for lubricating the Gulf of Mexico and being like “oops, sorry”)
    • Verizon (injecting tracking IDs into customer web traffic to sell to advertisers while also charging me $60/mo for 2 GB of data – I’m a product or a customer. I will not be both.)
    • RWNJ-owned businesses (Chick-fil-A, In-n-Out, Hobby Lobby, Applebees, etc)
    • AT&T (After so many years, I forget exactly why, but they’re just evil)
    • The entire states of Florida and Texas
    • The lottery (I’d have the same payout and more fun just setting the money on fire)
    • Microsoft (It’s MY computer, not yours)
    • Apple (Overpriced hardware, control-freak walled garden, everything needs a damn $29 dongle, etc)
    • Reddit, Facebook, Twitter (also blocked in firewall)
    • Amazon (except the 2-3 times a year they give me a free month of Prime and I buy all my stuff, take the free 1-2 day shipping and cancel before they bill me)

    Late additions:

If there’s a PWA or Electron version of an app, I go with the PWA 100% of the time.

What plugin do you use in Firefox to add PWA support? That’s the ONE thing keeping me from ditching Chromium on desktop. Firefox on Android has PWA support (yay), but desktop still does not (boo).

I tried one or two add-ons in the relatively recent past, and neither worked to my satisfaction. Curious if you’ve found a better one that will bridge the feature gap and let me ditch Chromium.

    ptz ,
    @ptz@dubvee.org avatar

Firefox doesn’t support “installing” web apps as PWAs like Chrome-based ones do. There are plugins to provide that functionality, which I assume is what OP is referring to.

    ptz , (edited )
    @ptz@dubvee.org avatar

    Cool, thanks.

Yep, PWAs for Firefox is one I’ve tried and it did not work for me (forget the exact issues, but they were insurmountable). Even with the helper app , which I think was required to add/manage the launchers to the application menu, it just didn’t work out.

I’ll dig around when I have some more time to see what Linux Mint ships. Chances are it can be installed on other distros or at least compiled.

Should i take my coworker up on his job offer?

My coworker recently told me he moonlights doing an online job while working our normal job. You lost me after “it’s hard to explain but there’s a powerpoint presentation”. I would pass.

All I wanted was a simple search. (lemmy.world)

This is ridiculous. It’s taken me a long time to switch to DuckDuckGo because when I get comfortable with something, it’s really difficult for me to switch, but if they’re going to totally change it (even if it appears to only be for certain search terms now), this is the last straw....

Same. That’s why I run my own with Searx-NG. It sends your queries out to several (DDG, Google, Bing, and more) and aggregates the results to you. No extra crap, no bs, just what you searched for.

    Nope, it’s allowed.

The default robots.txt disallows access to a few paths but not /post or /comment.

There are lots of crawler bots hitting my instance (ByteSpider being the most aggressive). I just have a list of User Agent regexes I use to block them via Nginx. Some, like Semrush, have IP ranges I can block completely at the firewall (in addition to the UA filters)

I’ve dug into this somewhat. It’s something to do with caching images via the JS Service Worker in the UI. On first load, everything works. Refreshing then causes the images to break until you do a “hard” refresh to bypass the cache. Then they work until you do a regular refresh and the images “break” again.

As far as why it’s only startrek.website and no other instance (so far, anyway), I haven’t the slightest idea. As far as I’ve been able to examine the HTTP responses for images, there’s nothing weird going on. Perhaps the .website TLD causes confusion in the service worker? That’s just a guess, and is my only working theory. Unfortunately, I’ve only found two other Lemmy instances that use a .website TLD, and neither have any local communities that have images, so I’m unable to test that.

I use Photon as my main UI, and it doesn’t do any of that service worker image caching (just uses the browser cache), and it’s never experienced the issue. Funny enough, one release of Photon did implement that kind of caching via service worker, and startrek.website images broke immediately. Removing that part of the SW fixed it (the dev has also since removed that from the SW).

So I don’t think anything is misconfigured on startrek.website, but there is some kind of funny behavior when viewing its images from a federated instance that uses service worker caching.

    Workaround for Users:

Chrome: In your Lemmy tab, open developer tools and go to the Application tab. Click “Service Workers” in the left tree and in the right tree, check the box “Bypass for network” and then refresh. Images hosted from startrek.website should work.

Firefox: Should be the same, but I seem to be missing the option in 113.0.2 :hmm:

Apparently that no longer works in the 0.18.4 UI. :sigh: Maybe ask your home instance admins to offer additional UI options like Photon or Alexandrite
