Not just lazy. Wilfully ignorant and, dare I say, largely stupid as well.

Why do I care?

Well, I get all manner of spam texts because my mom gave some shitty app permissions to access her contacts. The spam messages are directed to me by name.

It’s not just their personal info they’re putting at risk when they click “agree” on data sucking apps.

[Abandoned all hope] Trying to self-hosting a mail server, but port 25 is blocked by my ISP

So, I spent the last few days researching and then finally setting up mailcow. I got my domain name, my wildcard certificate, got all the containers up, disabled ipv6 (I don’t have it set up on my home router and am too lazy to set it up tbh), created a domain and an mailbox, etc....

ptz ,
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

Edit: and in before the person that claims they have been self-hosting email for 20 years already… yes exactly! That is why yours still works.

You’re out of line, but you’re right. Lol

Any GoogleVoice Replacements?

I’ve recently decided to try and degoogle my life, or at least lessgoogle it. One app I use regularly is GoogleVoice. It works really well to keep my work and personal numbers separated. Also works reasonably well to keep my personal number clean from spam. What is out there that provides similar functionality?

I run my own Asterisk server for calls and have that working well, but I don’t really have a solution for SMS/MMS. My VoIP provider does support at least SMS, but I haven’t been able to get Asterisk to integrate with it. Kinda gave up for now on that part.

Interested to see if anyone has any self-hostable solutions.

Since Lemmy is a link aggregator, maybe aggregate us a link there, bud.

I’m not sure if this is the same fire control computer or not (looks very similar), but here’s a video explaining the general principles of how those worked:

Yeah, I saw an article on Hack a Day about that system a while back and sat there and watched that 40 minute film start to finish. I think there were 2 or 3 others in that series on YouTube that I watched after. Absolutely fascinating.

Wow. Didn’t know that. You learn something new every day, I guess.

I think it’s been like that for a while. I self-host a lot of webapps that have PWAs, and they only ever show up as a shortcut with the Chrome badge in the corner. I can’t tell a difference at all between “Create shortcut” and “Install {app}” options anymore.

Not sure when it changed, but it used to give you an actual, un-badged icon and appeared in the app drawer as you described. I think that’s been at least a year ago, but that’s just a best guess.

There’s every chance that’s Reddit’s fault and the comment with the answer was deleted within the last month as part of a “burn it down on the way out” protest. If you’re coming from a Google search, it may be annoying, but if you’re posting here about it, you can probably imagine why it was deleted.

I mass edited all of my Reddit comments to say “Deleted” along with a message that I do not want Reddit profiting from my content when they treat their community so poorly. I felt that was more constructive than simply deleting the comments (and risk the admins restoring it if I were to delete my account entirely).

Prior to the shitstorm, I was active in many communities and provided lots of answers to technical topics; those answers are now lost outside of any post archives out there.

ptz ,
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

Ah, yeah. lol. Morning brain fog had me thinking it was recent.

ptz ,
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

I respect that, and if Reddit had handled the situation differently, I’d be inclined to agree. But I just do not want them profiting off of my contributions when they’ve shown such utter contempt for their user base and moderators.

@selfhosted Self host phone contacts sync

I am searching for something to sync my phone contacts between multiple phones for some time. Best case it shouldn't use DAVx^5 and should support Android and iOS. Thanks for your suggestions!

What I found so far:
Nextcloud - but needs DAVx^5
Radicale - also needs DAVx^5
SoGo - needs some CARD-DAV application

ptz ,
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

I’ve used Nextcloud and DAVx^5^ for years (back when X^5^ was still called DAVDroid). Works great.

That works for me since I use Nextcloud for other things. If you want to sync just contacts and calendars, I’d go with Radicale as I used that successfully before implementing Nextcloud.

If you use an instance just for yourself, it doesn’t actually decrease the load on the main servers in any way.

That’s not completely true. Yeah, it still loads another server a bit, but the server-to-server federation traffic is much more lightweight than the client-to-server traffic that would be involved with you having an account on that server and accessing it that way.

But yeah, multiple, equally-sized communities on different instances is the ideal situation. The only sticky part right now is FOMO because you’d have to constantly watch for new SelfHosted communities and join them. Hopefully some frontend tools come along soon to make joining/managing multiple communities like that more streamlined.

Also, never trust a keyboard that requires network access.

ptz ,
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

Just a heads up if you’re using Jerboa and switch to a FOSS keyboard: github.com/dessalines/jerboa/issues/194

TL;DR: AOSP keyboard (and maybe also OpenBoard too) may have some glitches when entering text in Jerboa. If you do change to another keyboard, you might test that and add a comment to that issue to help with finding the root cause.

I could be wrong, but I think geothermal may be the exception to that. That heat is from the formation of the planet and radioactive decay (fission). That heat/energy would have coalesced during the accretion process regardless of whether the sun was adding energy. Again, I think. If I’m wrong, please enlighten as this is an interesting topic.

Edit: I was thinking I might be technically wrong since we can’t really “renew” geothermal energy, but Wikipedia does have it classified as renewable:

Geothermal power is considered to be a sustainable, renewable source of energy because the heat extraction is small compared with the Earth’s heat content.

ptz ,
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

That is true. I guess it depends on how much of the heat is generated via fission processes and how much is just stored from planetary accretion. I don’t have any numbers for that at this moment, but I will certainly concede that geothermal is fusion-assisted lol.

ptz ,
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

Wind: The sun (a giant fusion reactor) heats the atmosphere which generates the wind (highly simplified).

Hydro: Driven by the water cycle where the sun plays a key role in the “evaporation, condensation, precipitation” process.

That’s both noble and sad at the same time.

I love(d) Infinity, but Reddit has shown their true colors and the dev is knowingly getting into an abusive relationship. Even with the subscription model, most of that is going to Reddit and not the dev team.

I wish them the best, but I don’t see how this is going to end well. Hope they come to their senses before losing too much money and would love to see Infinity for Lemmy.

Will our conscious experience inevitably recur in the universe's infinite timeline? (lemmyunchained.net)

I continuously grapple with this intricate web of thought that intertwines infinity, atomic structure, and consciousness. It’s predicated on the assumption that if time truly is infinite, then there isn’t just a probability, but an inevitability, that all the matter in the universe will align exactly as they are now....

ptz ,
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

An interesting aspect of the parallel universe theory and its implications for consciousness is that at any given time we would be “sharing” consciousness with infinite many other beings.

This is my mental explanation for déjà vu. Change our mind. Lol

If everyone moved to open source non-profit solutions, the tech industry would lose billions

I’m a FOSS (free and open source software) contributor and enthusiast. So I prefer to use such products (Lemmy instead of Reddit, Linux instead of Windows, Firefox instead of Chrome, Signal instead of WhatsApp, you get the idea). Was just thinking that if everyone moved to such solutions, the tech and ad industry would lose...

Can you easily unlock the boot loaders to install Lineage? What kind of factory bloatware comes on them?

ptz ,
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

Oh, nice! Assumed since Sony it’d be locked down and walled-in like every other Sony device I’ve owned. I’ve been sticking with OnePlus and Motorola and making sure the ones I got were bootloader-unlockable, but I may give them a look for my pending upgrade.

ptz ,
@ptz@dubvee.org avatar

I’m still on a OnePlus 3 (literally replying on it).

I like that I can just unlock the bootloader and flash LineageOS without any artificial restrictions. It gets annoying having to look for specific models of Moto that van be unlocked or hoping the one I get from Amazon is actually not from a carrier. OnePlus is pretty much a safe bet.

Looking for a successor before this one gives up the ghost. Lol

From a combatting misinformation perspective:

If we’re drafting rules here, I’d like to suggest a rule that the original article URL should be the one used for the post, even if it’s to a paywalled source. It helps immensely in vetting sources without first having to click into an obfuscated archive link. I’m all for sidestepping paywalls, but I think it would be beneficial to have the archive link in the post body instead.

Part of my media literacy protocol is establishing that the source is trustworthy, and it gets annoying / tedious clicking into an archive link only to find out the source is “Jimbob’s REEL TRUTH NEWZ”.

I’m also on the fence about linking to YouTube (and similar) videos as news sources.

What's your "base" stack of choice?

How do you set up a server? Do you do any automation or do you just open up an SSH session and YOLO? Any containers? Is docker-compose enough for you or are you one of those unicorns who had no issues whatsoever with rootless Podman? Do you use any premade scripts or do you hand craft it all? What distro are you building on top...

Yeah, I totally forgot about reverse DNS. Good catch. I probably left out a few other things what with the repressed trauma of it all. lol.

I had to deal with Suddenlink business, and they were (somehow) surprisingly worse than what you described for Comcast (I didn’t know that was possible, TBH). Suddenlink wouldn’t even unblock the SMTP ports at all let alone delegate rDNS to our static.
