Ukraine kills 65 of their own soldiers by shooting down a plane carrying POWs for exchange (farside.link)

The Ukrainian Armed Forces, with the help of Patriot air defense, shot down an Il transport plane in the Belgorod region, where captured Ukrainian soldiers were flying for exchange. At first, the idiots from the telegram dumps of the Office of the President rejoiced, then they received a “hat” and all of them declared that...

Is Twitter really allowed as a source here?

otp ,

This is what they wanted, right? Punish the women and punish children because a woman got raped?

“But the poor man has to either go to jail, or pay child support! It sucks for him, too!”

So… something that’s bad for everyone (except for the rich, who can get safe abortions out of state in secret). Sounds like what the Republicans want!

Ukraine says it was not informed about need to ensure safety of airspace before plane crash in Belgorod Oblast (kyivindependent.com)

Ukraine’s military intelligence, or HUR as it is known in Ukraine, said the Russian side did not inform it about the need to ensure the safety of the airspace before a plane crashed over Belgorod that the Russian Defense Ministry claims had Ukrainian prisoners of war (POWs) on board....

otp ,

I highly doubt this was a mistake on Russia’s part. This was on purpose.

My partner is a millennial who grew up with computers, but never got too technical with them. She was confused when I told her that our WiFi was down at the router, but we still had an internet connection.

“If we have internet, why can’t I connect?”

Because the WiFi isn’t working.

“But you said we still have an internet connection.”

Well, I do, and so would you if you’d let me run an ethernet cable to your office, too!"

“…but if there’s no WiFi, why does the cable work?”

Lol

otp ,

When you grow up around something being easy to use, you lose the intricate understanding that used to be necessary.

For Gen X and Millennials, it’s probably cars and/or electronics.

Busted light switch cover? Better call an electrician “just in case”.

Need to replace an air filter? Better take it to the shop.

Not sure where the line is, but I had a Gen X woman tell me that she needs to take the car to the dealership to get her air pressure adjusted. When I showed her how to take off the cap on the tire’s air pressure valve, she looked at me as if I had just pried off her steering wheel, lol

Not sure where the line is drawn, and there are definitely some people in those generations who know those things. But I’d bet Boomers and earlier generations had a better understanding on average.

I got flooded with ads calling it “Pokemon with guns” for the week or so leading up to launch. I think it was their own fault, lol

“My weekend? Oh, it was dreadful. Spent the whole time thinking about this project, and I really don’t want to spend next weekend thinking about it too, so I gotta get this done.”

“My hobbies? Oh man, I love Excel. The things you can do with it. I hear there are some great YouTube videos on it. It seems like you’ve got some down time; you should check them out! But I’ve got to get back to my spreadsheet now.”

This is so bizarre of a scenario.

I thought you were putting your noodles into your measuring cup of water because you don’t own any bowls. Or a stovetop or a pot. Why are the noodles dry in the end?

I also like how you describe it as “the alternative”, as if obviously, this is what a normal human being would do.

…and I just noticed the noodles are still in the cup they came in.

My only deduction is that your kitchen consists solely of cupboards, measuring cups, and a microwave. Likely no utensils, as they could cause similar catastrophes.

Are most pack-ins these days even physical copies? Feels like most are digital downloads.

I heard it was to trick people into believing in climate change so they would support taxes and bans on gasoline vehicles. This would result in “lockdowns” limited to public transit (owned by government), walking (slow and undefended), or electric vehicles (which could be tracked and even controlled remotely by the government).

This would ensure that everyone would live in 15-minute cities and never leave. And where other bad things would happen, like sex education and universal basic income, I guess.

otp ,

There is a minimum age on presidency, and there should be a maximum age.

And I think it should be the life expectancy of the country minus 4 years.

73 and want a second term? You’d better be damn good at raising the life expectancy, and fast!

‘disease spreading’ is an incredibly low bar for morality… any and all human contact, likely, immoral

I’d be willing to bet that that the person making that argument was not properly wearing fitted N95 masks for the duration of the pandemic…and during the 2023/4 flu season…

otp ,

Spreading disease can be immoral, but when it comes to sex, that should be two properly-educated and consenting adults doing something that won’t affect anyone beyond the two of them.

We can reassess the situation when diseases transmitted by gay sex are overwhelming hospitals.

otp ,

Yes, did you reply to the wrong comment? Lol

I said “Spreading disease can be immoral”. Not that homosexuality can be immoral.

otp ,

I think it’s the kind of person who has everything “figured out”.

They “figured out” how the world works at 16, and just called it a day on building up their understanding of the world any further. Anything that doesn’t fit into their worldview is discarded, and anything that contradicts it is evil/bad/lies/whatever.

But as for this person, they’re worse than a gay man (in their own warped definition of morality). Because anal sex spreading disease happens between CONSENTING adults. But spreading covid happens to UNconsenting victims.

I would be pleasantly surprised if this would change their mind. But at the least, it should embarrass them! (Probably won’t, but it should)

Zelenskiy slams Trump’s rhetoric on stopping the war as ‘very dangerous’ (www.theguardian.com)

The Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, fears that if Donald Trump returns to the White House next year he could make unilateral concessions to Russia that override Ukraine’s interests and branded the former US president’s claims he could stop the war in 24 hours as “very dangerous”....

otp ,

Trump doesn’t even do what’s right for the American people. Why would he do what’s right for the people of Ukraine?

DOJ: Ex-IRS employee who leaked Trump's tax returns intentionally got job to disclose records (www.usatoday.com)

If they block you, you never have to hear them again. That sounds like a win for you in my book!

Getting the last word in an argument isn’t a victory.

otp ,

that’s what fucking taxes are for, and Mr. Beast needs to be taxed until his fucking channel is gone.

Why until his channel is gone? If he’s a business, we need to tax him and his business appropriately. More, sure. But taxing a business until it’s gone is counterproductive, even if you don’t like what the business stands for…

otp ,

Oh, I didn’t know that. Thank you!

otp ,

Most scientific claims are based on probabilities, not certainty.

E.g…

  • We’re 95% sure this psychological phenomenon happens in this scenario, and not randomly.
  • We’re 99% sure that this drug works, and it’s not due to random chance.

Proof is about probabilities.

How likely is it that the mirror turns black vs. continues to be a mirror? How likely is it that a person continues to exist when you can’t hear them?

Especially considering that you continue to exist when someone else can’t hear you.

You don’t need to be 100% certain. Just go for Occam’s razor.

State laws are factoring into college choices for young adults (www.nbcnews.com)

One survey shows as many as 73 percent of young adults are taking state abortion laws into account when making decisions about where to go to college. Savannah Sellers reports on one of the most important decisions in the lives of young students and their families.

otp ,

If you want better access to healthcare as a woman, apply for schools in blue states.

Or it could be about more than abortion access.

Young women could just be choosing to move out of or away from states that have outlawed basic medical operations for women. College is probably the first opportunity that most people have to move away from home. And people going to college generally want to improve their lives, so why not go somewhere better?

otp ,

Anecdote doesn’t trump science. I’m not saying the article is spot-on, but you could be lucky. Even this article is saying that “any one [single] anti-depressant [at random]” is no better than placebo. So one specific anti-depressant that works for you might not work for someone else. And one that works for someone else might not work for you.

I’m glad that you have something that works/worked for you. Not everyone is so lucky.

There’s also the matter of therapy likely being most important or effective for some people, or the fact that depressive symptoms may arise as a symptom of a different illness that may be made worse by some anti-depressants…yet some people get prescribed an anti-depressant that doesn’t work for them, and some doctors don’t think to do anything else. Or the patient can’t afford to experiment with drug after drug to find one that works for them.

Kenneth Smith could be the first person executed with nitrogen gas. He spoke with NPR (www.kpbs.org)

Alabama has already tried once to execute Kenneth Smith. On the evening of Nov. 17, 2022, Smith lay on a gurney as workers tried for an hour to insert needles into the veins of his hand, arms and collarbone so they could put him to death by lethal injection. Just before midnight, the execution was called off....

Slight male navigational advantage likely due to cultural differences, researchers find (phys.org)

A team of psychologists, social scientists, philosophers and evolutionary researchers affiliated with multiple institutions in the U.S. has found evidence suggesting that the slight advantage males have in navigation ability is likely due to differences in the ways male and female children are raised....

Yes. That’s what science is about…lol

Some people also “know” that going outside with cold hair causes people to catch a cold, but that’s not true.

In addition, studies help determine to what extent and effect happens. Studies also help determine what and where any edge cases might be, which can be important for treating illnesses, for example.

Annoys the paying customers, and the thieves will find a way to circumvent it in 5 minutes of playing with it, lol

Why? I find them much easier and faster, especially if I’d be bagging things myself.

Sure, the cashier can scan things more quickly than me sometimes, but compared to the extra waiting (due to self-checkout having a single line for all registers), it ends up being slower with the cashier.

Canadians worry US democracy cannot survive Trump's return to White House, poll finds (www.reuters.com)
