Oooh, so niche! I’m intrigued :-)

I remember when the UK only had 4 channels, Freeview is like a wild futuristic selection of soooo much stuff!

Granted the picture is often way worse than old terrestrial on a CRT was, due to their modern tight bandwidth allocations, and most of what’s on is absolute drivel, but gosh there’s so much choice! 😮

Phew, good thing we block all ads, etc, then.

My PiHole lost is over 7.5 million domains, it’s a beast. I love the people that make that software!!

I really need to ween myself off the Internet so that, once it becomes an unusable hellhole in the next 20 years or so, I’ll be able to give it up entirely and move on to better things.

I said what I wanted anyway, the karma system didn’t affect your ability to say what you want. But yes, the karma system wasn’t perfect, nooo way.

They considered that a standard? 25 meg?

Jesus wept. I haven’t had internet that slow in well over a decade here in the UK!

How do they manage things like 150GB game downloads over there, or 3 or 4 people all using the connection at the same time…

Last year the EFF published this "legal primer" for people hosting Fediverse instances (www.eff.org)

Two important notes: (1) This guide is focused on legal risks that flow from hosting other people’s content, under U.S. law. In general, the safe harbors and immunities discussed below will not protect you if you are directly infringing copyright or defaming someone. (2) Many of us at EFF are lawyers, but we are not YOUR...

U.S. law doesn’t apply in most places, strange that they focused on that particular country for what is a global concern, but for those who are there, I imagine this is very helpful!

what are .webp files and why has my online experience been plagued by them?

I don’t know what a .webp file is but I don’t like it. They’re like a filthy prank version of the image/gif you’re looking for. They make you jump through all these hoops to find the original versions of the files that you can actually do anything with....

Old, outdated software? Windows 11 won’t open it, nor will Photoshop, last I checked.

I’m fully aware of the format, but until it’s compatible with everything seamlessly the way PNG or JPEG are, I’d rather stick with those for now.

What’s especially annoying is web pages that store their images seemingly as JPEG but are actually serving them through a CDN that converts them to WEBP if the browser supports them, so you try to save a seemingly JPEG JPEG, only to find at the last second it’s actually WEBP.

Nobody is claiming that there will be a literal ice age here. What part of Europe are you from where people actually think that will happen?

Even a small change in weather patterns can have disastrous consequences across many industries and aspects of society however, and must be taken extremely seriously. Will this be an apocalypse of biblical proportions? No. Will it plunge us into various types of suffering and despair? Yus.

Let’s also not forget it’s adult connotations, things are rated “X” for a reason 😅

Kinda sounds like they mean it follows their personal ethics and religious rules more closely than others, not that it’s actually more ethical.

Ethics are entirely subjective.

I would argue that any system that follows the rules of a religious society is deeply unethical.

The dominance of cat content VS dog content on Lemmy reflects its current techie userbase

I originally joined Reddit in 2011, and in the beginning it was dominated by cat content. It was rare to see a post about dogs. Sometime in the mid 20-teens this phenomenon reversed. It’s always been a “pet theory” of mine that this reversal was due to Reddit becoming mainstream, and that it’s initial nerdy/techie user...

As a techie that doesn’t like cats (people seem blinded by their cuteness even when every other personality trait is negative, they destroy things, only look out for themselves, don’t care about you whatsoever, will refuse to be trained and not learn boundaries, etc) this saddens me.

I much prefer dog content personally. Where can I go for the latest hot dog content on this platform? 🔥

I don’t know what you mean by blue or green bubbles (I use Android, Chomp for SMS, Discord to IM, WhatsApp for the stragglers) but I’ve never met anybody so shallow that they’d give up a friendship over what brand of phone you use. That’s the kinda thing a very childish 13 year old might do.

I think you might need to re-evaluate who you think your friends are, if they’d rather cut off contact with you than receive a slightly different looking text message. That’s incredibly, INCREDIBLY weird.

no one in the UK sends SMS messages

I do, I use stuff like WhatsApp and Discord too mainly of course, but an SMS is fast and reliable, as opposed to the others that require a decent data signal on both the sender and receiver (which is often lacking on my network unfortunately).

Plus, I can schedule SMS messages for a particular time so as to not wake the recipient up if I want to send them a message in the middle of the night, very handy!

Plus, I can theme my SMS app however I want, changing colours, fonts, etc, to be exactly what I like, as well as picking out an SMS app that has the features I’m looking for in the first place (I recommend Chomp). I find applications like WhatsApp to be extremely limited in this regard. Not a deal breaker, but I do love customisability and choice.

I certainly don’t use SMS anywhere near as much as Discord, but it’s wonderful to have it, and I use it regularly :-D

P.S I’ve wanted to use Signal for years but nobody I meet uses it :-( Such a shame, it seems neat!

P.P.S Telegram looks neat too, unfortunately again the adoption with people I know is strangely just 100% furries and nobody else, so I stick to the client that everybody uses rather than having a bunch of them installed (Discord & occasionally WhatsApp).

@obinice@lemmy.world avatar

You didn’t mention which devices this is compatible with, which even on the Android side is very limited, unfortunately.

It’s a neat idea, I’m glad it exists, but I can’t be sure it has full support the way stock Android does, and it’s not necessarily compatible with my Android phone anyway, and I’d have to root my phone and void the warranty, so I think I’ll give it a miss for now.

Maybe in a few years I’ll try it on an old phone that I don’t mind killing if something goes wrong, just in case! :-D

Jerboa is the best I’ve used so far, though hopefully Boost will be even better when that’s released!

Boost for Reddit was an absolute top tier application.

Unfortunately, voting doesn’t help. Besides there being basically no parties with any real strong climate policies, when you vote a decent sounding one in, they just go back on their promises anyway.

And even IF we vote in a party that truly brings about radical and positive climate change policies, that’s just our one country, a drop in the ocean. The rest of the planet would still drag us down with them, even in that wildly positive scenario.

I don’t mean to be a doomsayer, I just don’t see a way out, I wish I did. Voting certainly doesn’t solve our problems, climate change or otherwise. The rich ruling class will do whatever they want, regardless.

I’ve been wondering exactly this, Lemmy will have to be shut down in the EU if it doesn’t comply with GDPR, and considering that means each individual instance and the individual/group/company running it…

I just don’t see how this is ever going to be secure enough to fully comply with GDPR. Not when huge security holes like this exist, where anybody with a tiny bit of knowledge and a few hours can access so much data on people anywhere…

For my family, the 2010s were already a big downward trend. Huge global financial crisis and it’s fallout felt to this day, good things going away or getting worse (just look at how Facebook, Twitter, etc became utter crap around 2012), the rapid acceleration of income and class inequality, just so, so much that was slowly going downhill got even worse :-(

It’s easy to forget that so much happened in the 2010s, even early on. It wasn’t long into that decade that Occupy Wallstreet reminded us that we can’t beat the rich, and that there’s no hope. It crashed and burned so hard, and nobody’s been able to stand up to corpos the same way since.

For me, hope was lost in the late 2000s. Everything else has just been slow nails in the coffin since then :-(

YSK: Signal is a great secure private messenger app comparable to others on the market. (restoreprivacy.com)

“When you use Signal, your data is stored in encrypted form on your devices. The only information that is stored on the Signal servers for each account is the phone number you registered with, the date and time you joined the service, and the date you last logged on.”...

obinice ,
@obinice@lemmy.world avatar

My problem with Signal is that nobody I know uses it, which unfortunately makes it useless.

Other than that, I genuinely think it’s pretty great. But you’ll have to persuade people to leave Facebook and WhatsApp en masse before it becomes ubiquitous enough to be useful.

obinice ,
@obinice@lemmy.world avatar

If it’s decentralised, hosted by various unknown parties that can tamper with it as much as they like without thorough oversight, how can it be considered very secure? This is what worries me.

I am thrilled, Boost has been the best Reddit experience for me since I stopped loving Bsconreader. I don't even remember what my problem with it was, I think it was crashing or.... something, haha.

Boost ended up being a UI I preferred significantly, and I never looked back! This is gonna be FANTASTIC, where do I throw my money?!
