The integrated graphics on that system are still pretty mid at best tbh. You would want a system with a discrete gpu. Otherwise i agree with the sentiment

natebluehooves ,

It’s just the problem that was brought up has been a solved issue for quite a while. It’s cool if they didn’t know though, i can see the redesigned big picture mode isn’t well advertised.

natebluehooves ,

Didn’t like the tone of my last attempt to reply, so here’s a rundown from a hardware enthusiast perspective.

Single board computers with no thunderbolt cannot have an external GPU, and have soldered permanent processors

The U sku on that cpu denotes low voltage. That cpu will have much worse performance than you expect. Ghz numbers usually advertise boost clocks, not stable performance.

Even when an external GPU is an option, the memory bandwidth of thunderbolt is not sufficient to run most cards and will result in micro stuttering and overall reduced performance. Usually you lose ~30%-50% of your performance depending on the card.

To top all of this off, you cannot use the steam deck as a reasonable expectation for this class of hardware. The deck runs a custom APU with a beefier than normal GPU. You will not get that performance from the linked micro pc.

natebluehooves ,

Steam support usually makes exceptions for situations like this.

natebluehooves ,

As far as we can tell that was never an order or anything. The CMs seem to be cracking under pressure.

natebluehooves ,

Yeah, audio and video workloads really need the ram. The base model is fine for content consumption though.

natebluehooves ,

The problem is the electrical resistance of the socket. Most of the performance on apple silicon is achieved through extremely high bandwidth, low latency memory. Unfortunately that necessitates a socketless design at the moment, and you can see that happening on the snapdragon X too.

My hisense google tv connected to an open wifi network and updated without being told to. The update broke CEC and hdmi arc. I cannot adequately express my rage at this moment.

Apple (slrpnk.net)

I don’t care if anyone has a Xiaomi, Oneplus, Samsung, etc. Each brand is using a modified version of Android, and they chose to be compatible with each other. But for example the “blue vs green bubble” drama is a thing specifically because of Apple locking their unsuspecting users into a closed ecosystem. And it sure...

natebluehooves ,

Exactly. As an iphone user (and linux sysadmin, compartmentalization is bot that hard), i agree with your criticisms of apple most of the time. They just make the better phone IMHO, and I say that as a nexus 4, nexus 6p, pixel XL, oneplus 7 pro, and oneplus 9 pro user. Yes i used custom roms, no I do not have the patience to treat my phone as a linux project anymore.

I regularly have android users go out of their way to try and fight me over this, and they always claim I must not have used android. It’s annoying to field over and over.

natebluehooves ,

A lot of it comes down to software. I had a cpu performance scaling bug that meant my oneplus 7 pro would occasionally take ~5 seconds after unlock to stop being clocked at 100mhz. It made the unlock experience really laggy and crappy. It felt cheap and lazy.

natebluehooves ,

But the implementation is often a bit more stable or user friendly. Those features often do not light the world on fire because the user experience is not there yet, and google moves on too fast to finish the feature.

Also that account is BRAND NEW, as in less than a day.

Buyers worldwide go for bigger cars, erasing gains from cleaner tech. EVs would help. (abcnews.go.com)

The negative impact on the climate from passenger vehicles, which is considerable, could have dropped by more than 30% over the past decade if not for the world’s appetite for large cars, a new report from the Global Fuel Economy Initiative suggests....

As the owner of a 2016 smart fortwo, they are too expensive, and servicing can be expensive due to mercedes benz. Cute cars, but the price sucks.

Individual lawmakers have personal values and agendas. Humans are chaotic contradictions cloaked in a semblance of order.

natebluehooves ,

Pretty much this for me too. Switched to iphone because I no longer wanted to tinker, switched my work laptop to apple silicon because the battery life and performance is stellar.

Learned to be fine with mac os, do most things in terminal anyway. Will likely switch to asahi linux when it is stable enough that I don’t have to tinker, because tinkering gets in the way of actually getting things done in my situation.

Also, being real: running LLMs on my mac is great. 128gb of unified memory basically means 120gb of vram. It’s absurdly expensive, but nothing quite like it exists in the market right now.

natebluehooves ,

What? We call in a whole pizza order all the time. You can do that.

natebluehooves ,

To be clear: the training also does this.

natebluehooves ,

At max usage, an m1 has a hard time overheating. The hardware is really good this time, and the previous overheating was due to insufficient cooling hardware.

Even if apple adds features that run the cpu/gpu/neural cores as hard as possible, overheating is not really on the table the same way it was on x86 macbooks.

natebluehooves ,

The bigger point here is that if you need that kind of power, it comes with compromises to battery life, heat, and device longevity.

Apple silicon is just fast enough for most workloads you want on a laptop, and can handle surprisingly heavy video workloads. For anything more, a desktop is a better idea than a laptop anyways.

There’s definitely a niche for desktop replacement class laptops, but that is a niche. Gaming laptops are still king though. You don’t buy a macbook for gaming.

natebluehooves ,

Admittedly I am in a weird situation where consoles and steam deck are both off the table. I am a bit of a framerate junkie. 30fps is unplayable.

Amusingly my m1 max macbook can actually hold 120fps in final fantasy xiv and actually has a 120hz screen, but those specs for the price would make no sense if this wasn’t also my main productivity system. The battery life, heat, speakers and screen quality are all huge bonuses in this case.

A steam deck would never satisfy me, so a gaming laptop would have been mandatory for travel if not for my macbook.

natebluehooves ,

Amusingly there are a lot of fetish gear Etsy shops that are still above board, but not much else in my experience.

natebluehooves ,

Weird how he just… disappeared instead of admitting you may have a point. How long until he makes the same argument in another thread?

You should take a look at her district. She represents an area barely anybody lives in. The people of colorado by and large hate her.

Their ipads and macbooks use usb-pd, and their chargers provide it. Not a guarantee, but a decent sign.

Find me a reasonably priced 70” monitor and i will hail you as the next coming of christ. That is the holy grail for me.

The only big reddit energy was this comment and the subsequent doubling down. The comment above was an even handed rebuttal, this response is tone policing and name calling.

You may disagree with his rebuttal but this is not how you respond to adversity.

natebluehooves ,

This kind of issue is why pawb.social is not open registration. These low effort trolls cause a lot of problems, and i don’t want my server to be responsible for this crap.

natebluehooves ,

Correct! I should have specified I mean to prevent our community from being the source of the posts.

natebluehooves ,

Open registration is part of the problem.

natebluehooves ,

In the US? Yep! We really need working public transit that isn’t seen as a poor person’s “punishment”.

natebluehooves ,

Intel macbooks deserve the hate, but the apple silicon ones are genuinely impressive to the point of being worth it until the competition catches up in terms of ARM performance, especially in terms of battery life.

natebluehooves ,

Very odd… i multitask and run both paravirtualized (arm) and virtualized (x86) linux and windows without issues. You are more likely on the base model and out of RAM.

natebluehooves ,

My lemmy server is selfhosted (pawb.social), and the running costs are pretty negligible after initial costs.

We get plenty of donations honestly, but that is obviously not universal.

Google ordered to pay $339M for stealing the very idea of Chromecast (www.androidauthority.com)

Chromecast has been one of those smaller hardware products that have brought about a meaningful experience upgrade. The first Chromecast solved the pain point of clunky TV software interfaces, making it easier to locate content on your handy smartphone and then play it on your big-screen TV. However, a Court in the US has ruled...

Objection: assuming facts not in evidence.

natebluehooves ,

Yeeeeah… i have an iphone not because i like apple or something, but because their silicon is genuinely the best low wattage performance at the moment, and their software is more stable.

Both of these can change any day and I wouldn’t stick around. Brand loyalty is for chumps.

Maybe conservatives assume liberals like apple because apple greenwashes their company with their ads?

natebluehooves ,

I wouldn’t personally use chatGPT ,or any language model for that matter, if factual information is the goal.

DDG has been my go-to recently, but mostly because I’m jaded with current year data harvesting and such. The internet feels like such a hassle these days .-.
