Not to be depressing… When i was 5 I sometimes slept in bed next to my mom. Woke up one of those days and she was already in rigor mortis. I touched her and she felt like an uncooked turkey, if that makes any sense. Took me a couple decades before I could actually handle an uncooked turkey or like, be around someone wearing her favorite perfume without almost fainting. Nobody knew exactly what killed her, maybe just sudden death syndrome.

If animals count, when i was about 6 my sister had a horse that slipped on the cement and when it managed to pull itself back up… I don’t think it’s totally accurate, but my memory is that its whole body was raining blood a few feet in front of me. Like I remember my vision being framed by blood dripping like a rainstorm from a cloud. Needless to say, it didn’t survive. I remember my dad using the hose to spray all the blood off the cement. I saw lots of dead pets over the years… Between all the wild animals and the back road that everyone sped on, most pets had short lifespans.

Anyway, I grew up through a lot of other fucked up stuff… And people wonder why I’m weird. And if you don’t want morbid answers, don’t ask morbid questions.

I use kde6+Wayland. I do like the simplicity of Cinnamon, but it runs games slower than kde, even though mangohud claims they run at the same speed. For example, in Cinnamon it’ll say 60fps when it’s clearly in the 30s-40s, and kde actually runs the same thing at 60fps. This is with every tweak i could find, and yes, including turning on the setting to turn off compositing during games.

Kde6 is still quite buggy at times, but I’m really enjoying Wayland’s smoother general behavior over x11, even with x11 stuff like wine/proton. This is on arch + AMD rx 6600 xt. I used old gnome 2, then mate, then Cinnamon for years, but if KDE can clean itself up a little bit (no judgment tho, i get it) it may be my permanent DE. Generally when i go to report a bug, it’s already reported by someone else…

I generally do this on my NAS, combined with nightly and bi-weekly backups, plus a 6-mo safety backup, to a backup drive. Also, basic off-site nightly backups for important stuff. If I worked on really important stuff that required lots of versioning, though, I’d probably go with a versioning system instead of inserting the date.

There’s a dozen apps for it, but I wouldn’t trust them to do a perfect job. At a bare minimum, you’d probably need to keep said app up to date at all times, and it’d need to be one that runs in the background or runs on every boot or something.

I find it funny, actually. For years, I used DOS, exclusively command line-based, on a 286 and when I got a new 486 computer in the early 90s I was so excited to get Windows 3.1 on it. Decades later, I find myself hating Windows and going back to Linux and often a command line. As far as I’m concerned, the closest thing to the last usable version of Windows was 7, and it still kinda sucked.

Less relaxing if you know that it has actual goals. There’s no actual repercussions if you fail, you just don’t get patted on the back as much. If you have that perfectionistic, completionist attitude, there’s still a tiny bit of stress. I wish the game had 0 expectations, but it’s still mostly relaxing.

Reply to old reply, sorry. Technically blocking the IP isn’t perfect either. In theory, as long as it has the wifi credentials, and your wifi has access to the internet, your TV will be able to access the internet if it really wants to. All it’d have to do is ignore the IP assignment or fake/change a MAC address during DHCP. I don’t know why a “legit” TV would do this, but if you get some unbranded Chinese thing, or if any wifi device wants to be malicious, it can bypass DHCP+IP filters very easily.

I live near multiple major Boeing facilities and so a large percentage of the local population works there. Boeing, due to their hiring practices and sort of employee abuse and such, basically create (or attract) a creepy cult of weird psychotic narcissists, especially the white-collar workers. Not everyone that works there is like that, but the ones that work there for 20+ years almost always are. I have numerous relatives and know lots of other people who work there and they are all creepy, balding, extremely self-important and abusive people. Now other people may pipe in and say that they have a very different experience, but that’s been mine. Oh, and they all want everyone they come across to know that they work at Boeing. It’s a core part of their identity. They are desperate to impress everyone.

My most recent experience with long-term Boeing employees was my psychopath uncle-in-law seemingly tried to murder his wife when she decided to divorce him after 20 years of abuse, mostly because it would have looked bad at work and made it harder for him to make “executive”.

Honestly I relish in the lowering status of Boeing and its employees. It’s been a long time coming. They make some shitty jets these days, they have shitty business practices, there’s something clearly wrong with their corporate culture, and their cult of creeps have been a pain in everyone else’s asses for many years.

I guess that’s all a long way of saying that Boeing probably doesn’t even have to hire anyone to kill whistleblowers. I would not be shocked if a “good employee” took it upon themselves to do it.

It’s even more fun if you read the entire Asimov book catalog that’s set in the same universe as Foundation using the in-universe chronological order… unless you meant that’s what you did. That’s broadly “I, Robot”, the Robots series, the Empire Series, and the Foundation series. I’m sure some people don’t like his later books that tie it all together, but most of them are probably elderly and read the original series before the newer ones were published or something.

Unless they kill the people that build them, there will be plenty of people who know about these places. If we get the point of actually needing bunkers those people (who know the ins and outs of the bunkers) will want in. Nobody will protect the rich who had them built, because their money and influence will become worthless and nobody actually likes them. Random shot, because it’s probably not an issue on Mint like it was on Arch a few months ago, but xdg-desktop-portal problems can cause apps to take forever to load, but run fine once loaded.

edit: Try removing xdg-desktop-portal-gtk and/or xdg-desktop-portal-gnome

Portal basically is an interface/backend for flatpaks to interface with toolkits & DEs. If you don’t use flatpak, xdg-desktop-portal and associated backends should be removable. Even if you do, try removing the gtk and gnome backends w/apt. Hopefully it won’t try to remove a ton of stuff due to dependencies. Then, reboot and see if the slow loading problem goes away. If it does, you can try re-adding one or the other and see if it comes back.

Does logging in take forever as well?

Also after some cursory research, some people have had problems with portal on Mint after updates as well, just like on Arch. So… definitely try it.

What Android software could you use for managing it? Gadgetbridge seems to not have fully-developed support for it, even with their preferred firmware.

I’m using Gadgetbridge with a hacked Amazfit Bip and I’m pretty happy. I like the multicolor TFT LCD w/no default backlight on the Bip, which is very readable in bright light and only requires a quick button press to get the backlight on in the dark, or you can waste more battery life and have it turn on when you turn it towards yourself. It’s also got built-in GPS/workout tracking (you have to manually flash the A-GPS data occasionally…), the ability to load little open source apps, sleep tracking, heart rate tracking, notifications, custom watchfaces, etc which I’m sure the Pinetime has most of. The battery also lasts ages since it uses such a low-power LCD.

I’m not saying the Pinetime isn’t good, but decent alternatives exist. I would love a truly open-source smart watch, but maybe when the project is slightly more mature. I guess I could always get one and contribute to it… $30 is really not much. I’ll definitely try it if my Bip breaks.

Also the Bip cannot spy on you unless you install the official app. It’s limited to its interactions with apps over bluetooth, and I just use Gadgetbridge.

If you are getting actual hardware/sata errors on the host (not sure if that’s exactly what’s happening from your description), and multiple drives have had a similar problem, I’d suspect the sata cable or controller/mobo. Intel had a lot of weird sata issues on their older chipsets, so I’d also recommend making sure it has the latest bios update. Could you be more specific on what kind of hardware errors are showing up? Like, maybe parts of the logs.

Have you tried a running a different distro live f/usb or something like that? Doesn’t seem likely that it would help, but who knows…

It’s unlikely the kernel or other low-level code is the problem on 10 year old Intel hardware, though. I’ve run numerous distros on numerous different machines, many of which were Intel-based, over the last couple decades, and never had this kind of basic, low-level problem with SATA before without it being the cable or controller. Oh, I just remembered: check the PSU as well if you can. A faulty PSU could have a bad rail or wire or something that leads to these problems. If you have a known-good one lying around, depending on the motherboard, you could try temporarily hooking it up to the board and drive and see if it changes anything.

To eliminate Linux as a potential culprit, you could try to install Windows (7, 8, 10, whatever) and see if it exhibits similar problems.

How can I find the reason my PC crashes?

Lately my PC has started crashing while it plays videos. It freezes completely, screen frozen and not responding to any input (keyboard, mouse), I mean I cannot change TTY (alt + ctrl + F(1-2-…)), and it cannot even respond to alt + PrntScr + REISUB. I have to force power off by holding down the power button....

My biggest (not only) complaint so far is that entire planets have maybe 8 or 9 species of plants and animals. Hopefully biodiversity mods will pop up. It seems like a decent platform to build future content into.

I’m trying to move in this direction. I used to use Amazon mostly out of convenience and because they could get uncommon, hard to find stuff to me within 2 days when buying anywhere else would take 1-2 weeks. Now that they regularly fail to even get stuff to me when they say they will, and they are as generally evil as they are, I’m trying to get into the habit of buying from anywhere else.

I know ebay is fairly evil too, but I try to buy them from them if I need something oddly specific. If not, I go local.
