David Cage understandably gets a lot of flak, but the Quantic Dreams games aren’t actually bad at all. I’ve played Fahrenheit, Heavy Rain, Beyond: Two Souls and Detroit. And while they aren’t top-tier excellent, they were all memorable.

Having had both, I can say that with the framework you get a much better display, but you lose the trackpoint. The framework has better repairability, but has less IO. The hardware on the framework is well supported on Linux, but can be hit or miss on thinkpads, especially newer ones.

The only thing I’m really missing on the framework is the black thinkpad chassis - can’t really get used to the aluminum.

I’ve been using Fedora for many years (Nobara is just a fling) and updates were always remarkably stable. That being said, if you’ve played around with the configuration you might have issues, but if you stay with the standard install you shouldn’t expect problems.

Reading about Bluefin got me so interested that I just installed it on my laptop. After updating, it’s still at 39. How do I update it to 40?

One Friday afternoon, Gary called the engineering staff together and announced that he would give them all a raise over the weekend. Yep, OP uses his Switch way more than expected. The Deck is an extremely flexible device in a similar form factor. I’ve been able to beat so many games in my backlog with it, just excellent.

Beyond the proven addictive effects of handing a dopamine device to your kid, there are legal ramifications many parents aren’t aware of.

WhatsApp and TikTok aren’t just there like air, free for all to consume. They are service providers and both sides are bound by a contract, the EULA. IIRC, WhatsApp recently reduced it minimum age from 16 to 12. So if you install WhatsApp on your 8 year old’s phone, you have broken the contract.

The EU is a relatively large market, and it wouldn’t make economic sense to develop and produce EU-specific devices. I’m pretty sure you’ll also be seeing replaceable batteries.

I use KoReader, which is available for several different devices. It has a WebDav plugin, which I pointed to my NextCloud instance.

Whenever I encounter something on my tablet, laptop or phone, I upload it to NextCloud and can access it at my leisure.

If you haven’t published a few papers then your preference in acronyms is irrelevant.

AI comprises everything from pattern recognition like OCR and speech recognition to the complex transformers we know now. All of these are specialized in that they can only accomplish a single task. Such as recognizing graffiti or generating graffiti. AGI, artificial general intelligence, would be flexible enough to do all the things and is currently considered the holy grail of ai.

A few years ago I did listening comparisons of Amazon Music, Spotify, Deezer, Tidal and Quobuzz. At least for my ears, Tidal was way better, with engaging dynamic range and clarity. Quobuzz was just a little better, while listening to Spotify and Amazon Music was like FM radio in comparison, loud and compressed.

Pricewise, they’re all somewhat similar. I went with Tidal because it has good quality, a good catalogue, and pays the artists better.

That writeup from Xiph is excellent. The comparison with adding ultraviolet and infrared to video makes so much sense. But you’re dealing with audiophiles who seriously consider getting hi-end power and ethernet cables. I read somewhere that there was a listening test with speakers connected with hanger wire - and audiophiles couldn’t tell.

In the end, it’s all physics. I could never hear a quality improvement beyond normal 16bit, 320kbps, no matter how demanding the music.

Akschually air force would literally be Luftmacht, but that would sound too much like the Defense Force, or Wehrmacht, that they had during a certain period of time.

It is rumored that the Luftwaffe can even scrounge an operative helicopter or fighter or two. And if the German ministers traveling are really lucky, they might even have an Airbus out of repairs so that the poor diplomats don’t need to fly business class.

There are actually a few cargo ships using Flettner Rotors. They can’t completely power the ship - they require a bit of power themselves for the rotation - but they can noticeably offset fuel consumption.

I’ve been manually reencoding to h265 l, and while the space savings are significant, the pain is also. Especially if you mess up the audio or subs!

Do the LLMs have any knowledge of the effects of violence or the consequences of their decisions? Do they know that resorting to nuclear war will lead to their destruction?

I think that this shows that LLMs are not intelligent, in that they repeat what they’ve been fed, without any deeper understanding.

If you have bad eyesight, VR won’t help you. The goggles contain lenses to magnify and project the screens to a virtual distance from your eyeballs similar to a monitor.

You’ll still need your glasses, I’m afraid.

They’re still a big name in mainframes and are also a cloud hyperscaler, and they offer software development and consulting. They do a lot of research in AI and quantum computing, and even blockchain a few years ago. But altogether just a shadow of what they once were. I used to work there when Lenovo took over ThinkPad production and the hard drive business was phasing out. I couldn’t imagine being there now.

I thoroughly recommend the book “The Chinese Typewriter”. It goes through the various challenges that the Chinese language pose. How do you order characters, like in an alphabet? How it was encoded in Morse, or later on, in ASCII. And of course, the various attempts at Chinese typewriting. Actually quite fascinating!

As an OSS advocate, I fully agree. Sadly, OSS alternatives have to compete with easily accessible, slick and well-integrated products that are aggressively positioned. Just imagine all the steps you need to go through, just to install Fennec from F-Droid.

It’s easy for you and me. But imagine you’re Joe Everyman. First off, you need to know about F-Droid and where to download it. Then confirm that the browser can install software. And this is where I would imagine many users second-guessing if everything’s legit. And after it’s installed, you’ve got two separate app-stores to deal with. You need to know what you can install where.

If I extrapolate from my mother-in-law, who still can’t wrap her head around the concept of an app-store, let alone alternative browsers, that’s just too much hassle for most people.

When I was vaping I had to replace the coils every few weeks and cleaned out the mouthpiece, liquid container and stuff in an ultrasound. Also, I mixed flavor liquid with the nicotine liquid and had to watch out for the right mixing ratios. I’d say that’s all a bit involved and a bit much for those that just want a hit of nicotine.

Just giving my kids into the embrace of peer pressure isn’t love, it’s evading confrontation. Give them a place of trust and understanding, with clear rules they can understand and follow. If my kids are getting their way bending and evading the rules we set, then it’s way too late.

We often say yes, but sometimes we have to say no, and our kids are fine with that.

Back in the 90s when I was in uni, it was the only way to have a unix-like development environment for C/C++. I also spent an inordinate amount of time testing linux on exotic hardware, like 386 laptops or older Macs. There weren’t many distros back then, but I tried them all: Debian, Red Hat, Mandrake, SuSE, m86kLinux and even (shudder) Slackware.

It was (and still is) an extremely fun way to tinker around. But I have to say, I’m not complaining that pretty much everything works out of the box nowadays!

Most people want to stick to Windows or MacOS, and that’s fine for them if they want to put up with it. Pushing Linux or OSS in general is counter productive IMO and just puts people on the defensive. I’d rather plant a seed here and there. If someone complains about Windows on a kid’s laptop, then hey, I got an old laptop for my daughter and put Fedora on it. It was easy to install and maintain, unobstrusive and she can get everything done for school she needs. Or talking about gaming - you know the Steam Deck? You can game without Windows - Linux is a painless, drop-in replacement!

It pains me that a lot of Linux users were pushy elitist neckbeards that spent so much energy defending their distro of choice and Linux in general. The community tends to make Linux appear like some difficult, arcane way of using a computer. “First you must pass the initiation rite and choose the correct distro!” Seriously, fuck that mindset. Just download whatever, install it and enjoy hassle-free computing!

Highly doubt it, because pretty much all games are compiled for x86, and would require dynamic recompilation, which I’m turn costs performance.

Or… they could perform the recompilation beforehand just like the precompiled shaders. Hmmm… that would make it pretty viable!
