IIRC, IBM’s PowerPC chips had some of their instructions renamed in 1994. There were some very plausible motives given for changing how mnemonics worked. Mentioning flag names was boilerplate, abbreviating “ex-” words as X was too American, that sort of thing. Nobody gives a shit about Windows. Nobody. Not one soul. It’s only exciting when it betrays you. Windows persists entirely because it runs the software everyone already has. Hell, I’m in Linux, and I’m still running Windows software, right now.

Would running arbitrary desktop applications on a phone be ridiculous? Yep. But no more ridiculous than making desktop Windows work like a fucking tablet. And now a decade later, high-end phones outclass my laptop from that era. x86 was even an option! Android/x86 was A Thing for a hot minute, and Intel had that little SOC that’d fit in a Game Boy cartridge. Would it run well, or run Windows well, or run Windows programs well? Nope. But it’d do a battery-sucking job of running all the dumb shit people wanted to do with their magical pocket computers.

The ultimate irony is that ARM devices can run any old Windows program now. User-mode emulators like Box86 pair with translators like Wine to fake both the hardware and software of a Windows PC. Microsoft could’ve done that shit, themselves, and pushed some .NET phone where the backend doesn’t matter. Like Android was fucking supposed to.

A grammatical but boring sentence in Latin which is like eight different kinds of palindrome. It was the “cool S” of ancient Rome.

I got nerd-sniped by this a while back and tried finding any English equivalents, and long story short, there really aren’t any. It takes one palindromic word, two words which are also words when reversed, and some implications about matching letters between words. I just wrote a function that recognized when a fifteen-letter string matched the requirements (the latter ten letters being a reversal of the first ten) and trimmed down a dictionary.

The results still rely on a lot of… almost-words. Like “apart paler alala relap trapa.” Some of these are loanwords and some of these are nonsense. “Darts apart radar trapa strad” is closer. “Farad acara radar araca daraf” highlights two things: ACARA is an Australian agency, because my dictionary was a spellcheck file, and the daraf is a unit proposed by one guy who was explicitly spelling farad backwards, because us STEM types are all huge dorks.

Most recently, one joke about The Bee Movie in a silly playlist screenshot community ended two bewildered interactions later, with the mod instructing me to “die mad.” To anyone innocent enough to insist this sort of thing can only happen if I’m underplaying some intolerable behavior on my part - I have abundant receipts. This has been a problem long enough (on the other site) that smoke without fire deserved documentation.

And the absolute worst spaces on modern social media are ones demanding “be nice” while doing nothing when some asshole spits the worst thing they can think of over nothing. I’m not about to be deeply offended by some childmove like opining about my family because I didn’t find an argument compelling.
