Low bullshit quotient. No sudden garbage.

I switched when one guy unilaterally decided Ubuntu would completely flip its user interface, for no goddamn reason, the night before a long-term-support feature freeze.

Or near it.

Birdemic is objectively the worst film I’ve ever seen. The Room got people looking for another “best worst movie,” and Birdemic kept coming up, but-- look. The Room was A Thing because it’s only written and directed by an alien. In every other respect, it is a real movie, made by professionals, for sensible quantities of money. You will never appreciate good sound until you experience bad sound. But sound is far from the most jarring failure of Birdemic, as an example of visual storytelling. Difficulty hearing the protagonist’s utterly pointless wish-fulfillment first act is an improvement. And there is simply no excusing how the “special effects” might a well be from Mario Paint.

Birdemic is only fun-bad if you go in knowing it’s dawdling garbage. Otherwise it’s just bad, bad. It won’t gross you out or morally offend you. Nor will it scar you with incomprehensible cultural debris, like The Star Wars Holiday Special. But god damn is it stupid.

mindbleach ,

The worst movie I’ve seen in theaters is probably Ecks vs Sever. The first time I distinctly stopped giving a shit, halfway through a film. Just the dumbest gunplay possible, from two actors who should know better. When you google this film, the first result is for the first-person shooter, released exclusively on Game Boy Advance. And it is not even a top-five FPS on that platform.

A head-on collision of coked-out executive demands and no fucking money.

The Sinister Urge is almost okay. I’d hesitate to watch it without the MST3K treatment, but it had a genuinely decent ending, and most of its skeeze was deliberate and appropriate.

Even if it is about the life-ruining horrors of enjoying softcore pornography.

mindbleach ,

As intended. It was the punchline.

His greatest talent is making people forget he has talents. He was in a variety of bands in high school. He is a half-decent freestyle rapper. He had a significant career in off-the-wall broadcasting and swung that into a massive show on MTV. If you looked at young-adult cable circa 2000, the pillars of the zeitgeist were wrestling, South Park, and this fuckin’ guy.

Sacha Baron Cohen disguises himself physically so nobody sees him coming. When he shows up as himself, or as a character people already know, he can’t catch them off-guard with what a clever asshole he is.

Tom Green’s disguise is being Tom Green. Showing up as himself is what disarms people. It’s played-up, I’m sure, but it’s not a character or a bit. He is genuinely a high-powered maniac. Like a class clown who’s genuinely good at stuff. The boy who can do a pull-up just fine, but thinks it’d be funnier to struggle, and figures the longer he does it the funnier it gets. People with passing familiarity know that he acts like an idiot… but they don’t know why he acts like an idiot.

Mulholland Drive was almost my choice just for being a slog.

People need to be warned before picking a David Lynch movie. If you’re into his whole deal - great, whatever, have fun, it looks like high-test crazy with a relaxed pace. But nobody else gives one solitary fuck.

mindbleach ,

What is the lesser evil when both the DNC and the GOP work directly for the exact same military industrial complex?

If you can have that plus corrupt democracy in America or that plus outright fascism in America, I’m not seeing how the choice is difficult.

mindbleach ,

But less evil.

Also by definition.

Who the fuck wants more evil?

mindbleach ,

Yay harm increases! Apathy means innocence.

mindbleach ,

And then nobody becomes president.

mindbleach ,

And your argument is that someone already called them evil.

mindbleach ,

Restating the conclusion is not what constitutes an argument.

Lemmy.world is run by Enlightened Centrists. People who think we should all just get along, and calmly discuss these life-and-death matters, no matter how demonstrably wrong a lie is, or how much bad-faith abuse someone spits.

At this point - any internet community demanding “civility” is a red flag for bad moderation. “Be nice!” means they’re not prepared to treat ‘stop implying I’m subhuman, asshole’ as the justified response to a troll with a rear-mounted boot slot that needs filling. And even then it’s a coin-toss. You can spend immense effort restraining and editing responses to complete bullshit, guiding someone by-the-nose through why they’re blatantly fucking wrong, while they keep trying to make that personal through chest-beating and snide remarks… and then watch then give up all pretense and spit the worst insults they can imagine over dry criticism of what they choose to say… and see your reports of idiotic directed abuse go absolutely nowhere.

If your rules effectively run interference for bastards, fuck your rules.

Recently had someone argue Palestine isn’t genocide because the Arab population in Israel is going up.

Any obsession with birth rates is a red flag for brain worms, as surely as talking about skull shape.

Raddle isn’t an option obviously since it’s run by this arch anti tankie scum, ziq.

I don’t see how that essay is about-- oh, ziq is the author. Ohhh this asshole thinks that’s a bad thing.

… should we have been on Raddle?

mindbleach ,
mindbleach ,

Everything is in the past. That’s when stuff happened.

mindbleach ,

Any intent to destroy a national, ethnic, racial, or religious group - in whole or in part - is genocide.

This includes killing people, causing severe bodily or mental harm, preventing births, forcibly transferring children to another group, or deliberately creating conditions calculated to bring about physical destruction.

Doing it counts. Conspiring to do it counts. Publicly inciting it to happen counts. Trying to do it obviously counts. Being complicit in any of that, counts.

This is the fucking UN definition of genocide. I am just barely paraphrasing from the relevant articles of convention. If you care more about tone-policing and gatekeeping than you do about an overt effort to dehumanize and kill a specific group in a specific region for ethnic and religious differences, you can eat shit.

If not - we can talk.

mindbleach ,

Hey buddy? They both are. Israel is why Palestine is an open-air prison. Israel is the side that keeps killing those human shields, indiscriminately, without one shred of remorse. Apartments, hospitals, refugee centers, whatever.

Maybe inviting the world’s Jews to “go back to Africa” in the exact goddamn center of the Muslim middle-east was not a sensible idea, in terms of minimizing ethno-religious strife.

No country wanted to kill as many Germans as possible - they wanted the fucking war to end. They wanted to kill Hitler specifically, disrupt the Nazi regime, and go back to merely civilized levels of hating one another. Israel hasn’t fucking done that, with Palestine. Mostly they’ve just continued bombing. They’ve made token efforts to claim they want a rehabilitated Palestinian state… but always alongside collective abuses like the strict blockade that obviously leaves Israel in de-facto control of the region’s survival.

mindbleach ,

Doing it faster doesn’t take a miracle - it takes flooding deck seven with deadly fluorine gas.

Do you need this done more than those people need to breathe? Serious question. I have the button right here. Tell you what, you press it when you’re ready.

Anything clear should be about as non-light-absorbent as pure water. Glass, for example.

Or use a dielectric mirror and laser-light - so the overwhelming majority of monochromatic photons are reflected.

mindbleach ,

Marred by Lemmy.world’s admin being kind of a dick.

Positive overall, though. Mostly nitpicking. Too many communities demand “be nice!” and then do nothing about insufferable dolts who deserve occasional name-calling. Like we’re really in 2023 and still wringing our hands about whether someone on the web might use foul language. Frankly, if you’re moderating any kind of forum, and you can’t trust yourself to discern appropriate anger from unexcused vitriol? Quit.

Telling people to treat bad faith as if it’s good faith is the only way bad faith succeeds.

Stop helping those frauds.

mindbleach ,

Lemmy.world is the anchor store, for better and for much worse.

“Public companies” are owned by private individuals, you absolute dingus. Being for sale means private. They belong to specific persons and organizations.

mindbleach ,

Who owns the Post Office? Nobody, because it’s a public utility.

Who owns Johnson & Johnson? The shareholders. That’s what they’re holding. That’s what they bought. That’s what the money was for. Because being “a public corporation” only means any rando can participate in that textbook fucking definition of capitalism.

It’s a joint-stock company! That is what defines the advent of capitalism!

Discworld - preferably the City Watch novels. Books have been adapted a few times, but usually as lone events, and even the ones with a serious cast are just… okay.

Looking from one beloved dead author to another, Douglas Adams mercilessly chopped up the Hitchhiker’s Guide between mediums. There was no “original version.” It was all the same story, but sometimes with different events. That is the attitude necessary for capturing why Discworld is so good. Don’t film a book, page-for-page. That’s not how moving images work. Keep the characterization clear and fill in a storyboard from the Wikipedia description.

Anyway the real reason to go for a series would be consistent casting. Have the same guy play Vimes across a bunch of stories. Get cameos for Vetenari from the same wizened thespian. Call-forward future stories by turning bit-part scammers into Moist appearances, throw Gaspode in any scene with dogs, that sort of thing. Make Ankh-Morpork feel connected. Lived-in. Real, for a reality where wizards sometimes where fake glasses so people think they’re badly disguised as wizards.
