Asking my fellow @actuallyautistic friends:

Several months ago, I bought some headphones for about 70€. Sound quality is good, they're comfortable on/around the ears. I used to wear them in noisy surroundings.

Reading about ANC headphones here, I got curious if this could help me improve the conditions. So, I searched for suitable headphones and found out that mine actually are ANC 😆

Today, I tried the ANC at church and it was so.much.better.! But it feels a bit strange inside my ears.

@Sci_Fi_FanGirl @littlescraps @actuallyautistic there's trade offs to noise cancelling. the higher the noise cancelling the more pressure is being applied to the ears by the headphones. its because the inverse waves being generated are increasing pressure even though they undo the sound coming in.

Hello @actuallyautistic friends! Thank you everyone who contributed to my meltdown article. My next article is about autistic shutdowns: what they look like, how we manage them, and affirming ways our loved ones can support us. You can comment and please include how I should refer to you in the article. You can also drop them on my contact form (resiliencymentalhealth.com/contact/) if you want to share but prefer not to post it on the internet connected to your account.

@dramypsyd @actuallyautistic I've personally found that when I'm upset, particularly during arguments, I still will loose the ability to speak. It's like my brain is racing through ideas I want to say, but I can't find ways to make it make sense. They all get stuck like a bunch of people trying to walk out the door at the same time. That loop just won't stop and gets worse the stronger I feel. It created issues in the past where my partner thought I was giving the silent treatment.

@dramypsyd @actuallyautistic Things that helped were communicating about what had happened and coming up with a strategy of finding something to say, even if it's "I don't have any words" so we know what's going on, and we can try to decompress and calm down.

If you are both Autistic and ADHD, do you take meds for ADHD and do you find them helpful?

@flowerpot @actuallyautistic I and my children are all in this boat. I'm taking Intuniv which helps to some degree. At least one of my children is on Concerta which helps quite a bit. The side effects are something to be careful of though. Many can cause depression or anxiety.

Great take. The best bad guys are the ones that truly believe in their own motivations and have honest moral complexity.

Do you use the word "Neurodivergent"?

Why or why not?

Do you think it's ableist?

If you don't use it, what word do you use?

@theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic
My understanding of the term has always been as an umbrella term for all things including autism, ADHD, combinations thereof and related diagnoses. I've used it in that context when trying to group them together.

@bike @VoxofGod @admin @neuralex @PossiblyAutistic @Jobob @roryreckons @actuallyautistic That’s where Pilates is good, for core muscles. We do it with a physio, who tailors exercises to our specific needs.

This is not accurate. Mammals, including humans are not capable of cutaneous respiration. Nearly all the oxygen in our blood and by extension all of our bodies comes from breathing.

How did my comrades understand that they're autistic?

How old were you?

@actuallyautistic

mikey ,
@mikey@friendsofdesoto.social avatar

@theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic Gradually through adulthood (like late 20's to early 30's) as information became more readily available.

It came into sharper focus as all of my children are on the spectrum. Going through the process with the psychologists put my own childhood into perspective. I understand why things were so different.

I've often quipped that most of my adult life has been discovering that all the 'unique' aspects of my personality were technically diagnostic criteria...

I wonder… before the Internet, how did most Autistics do special interests and research rabbit holes? Hang out in libraries? But lots of books? 🤔

Thinking back, I guess I used to look for television documentaries and public broadcasting type stuff. It definitely wasn't as helpful as Internet.

@JeremyMallin @actuallyautistic I spent a lot of my youth in libraries and glued to Discovery channel, etc. So I think you got it. But I also think you're on the track of why the earliest adoption of internet was people deep in special interests.
