210 Palestinians reportedly killed during Israeli hostage recovery operation (thehill.com)

The bodies of 109 Palestinians including 23 children and 11 women were taken to Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital, and spokesperson Khalil Degran told the Associated Press that more than 100 wounded also arrived to the hospital. In addition, he said the rest of the 210 Palestinians killed were taken to Al-Awda Hospital after the...

maynarkh ,

The people killed had families, friends, who will be raging for revenge, bolstering the ranks of organizations like Hamas.

Hamas won this one, they don’t care how many Palestinians die, they want more people hating Jews. The people who lost this fight are the dead and their relations, and humanity at large.

maynarkh ,

The difference is that the stock market has a very distorted definition of value.

If you say that the value of something is what someone else is willing to pay for it, I could trade my house with a friend and say they paid a billion for it, except they paid me with their own billion-dollar house, and we would both become billionaires. Of course, that would be bullshit, but if my friend and I sat on the board of the FED, it would somehow become actually real.

I see how that works, but the question is, how far can that stretch? Wall Street already tells us there is stuff worth more than 40 years of the US GDP trading around in their pockets, so how much more can that get before they get called on their bullshit like me and my hypothetical friend?

maynarkh ,

Also, yanking back on the yoke as hard as you can when you hear a terrain alert is a pretty surefire way to crash and die anyways. So yeah, fake and potentially gay.

maynarkh ,

Some countries either lean on the Western side while ignoring Eastern atrocities, some others call out Western neocolonialism while ignoring China’s and Russia’s imperialist crimes, and there are a bunch of countries that are mostly led on the rightful moral principle that genocide is bad whoever does it, so they condemn it back and forth.

Then there is apparently fucking Hungary, who supports the trampling of human rights, genocide and dead children whoever does it. For context, this vote happened while the government was openly fighting with the US ambassador over geopolitics and Hungarian government corruption, and the population is divided on the genocide with no clear lean either way.

So the MBAs decided to outsource the work to some shithole where unions don’t exist to bust the WA union, and when the whole thing blew up in their face, they are shipping back the “completed” plane to the union shop to get it fixed up.

Bravo.

If anyone is interested, Al Jazeera was reporting on this whole charade way before the accidents and the whistleblowers started to happen.

Biden details a 3-phase hostage deal aimed at winding down the Israel-Hamas war (apnews.com)

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden on Friday detailed a three-phase deal proposed by Israel to Hamas militants that he says would lead to the release of the remaining hostages in Gaza and could end the grinding, nearly 8-month-old Mideast war....

This seems reasonable, what’s the catch?

maynarkh ,

My guess is that the argument is that participating in society does not equal endorsement of the system we live in. This is how musicians make money. By playing music to who pays for it.

That said, I myself am of two minds about them taking the money.

Well there is the convicted felon, rapist and wannabe dictatorial psychopath, there is the guy with the dead brainworms in his head, and there is the guy who you can vote for if you would like things to continue as they are.

Oh, you can also choose between reluctant and enthusiastic support of genocide, and breaking up strikes versus shooting at protestors. Clearly the US is the citadel of democracy.

They could deescalate by getting the fuck out of Ukraine.

Racist violence in Germany reaches record highs, support groups warn (www.euronews.com)

Violence against politicians has been dominating the headlines, but instances of everyday racism and antisemitic attacks are causing German victim advice centres to sound the alarm. Euronews travelled to Thuringia, a right-wing hotspot, to speak with a victim of neo-Nazi violence....

Muslim nurse in New York fired after calling Israel's war in Gaza 'genocide' (www.reuters.com)

WASHINGTON, May 30 (Reuters) - A New York City hospital fired a Palestinian American Muslim nurse after she called Israel’s war in Gaza a “genocide” during an acceptance speech for an award for her work with bereaved mothers who lost their children during pregnancy and childbirth....

maynarkh ,

Genocide is not a crime that goes by the numbers. It’s not about the number of children and civilians you killed. Those are just “regular” war crimes. Those are being committed by both of those countries, and arguably Israel is bigger on mass murder right now.

Genocide is where you kill or displace people to erase their cultural or national identity. In that, they are committing the exact same crime. Genocide is not when you kill Ukrainians or Palestinians, but when you declare that they do not have a right to exist, and effect that with force. Bombing a Palestinian hospital or a Ukrainian one is “just” a crime against humanity, mass murder, war crime, goes against the Geneva Conventions.

If you make one Palestinian leave Palestine, or take away one child from a Ukrainian family and raise them as Russian, so that there are less Palestinians / Ukrainians in the world, that’s genocide.

Both Russia and Israel are committing one single count of genocide each right now, with Israel committing a lot more murders, though Russia is trying their best too.

maynarkh ,

This is genocide.

And the ICJ agrees.

It does not diminish the genocide Israel is committing, but Russia is definitely committing genocide in Ukraine, insofar as one of the aims of their war of aggression is the erasure of Ukrainian identity.

maynarkh ,

It depends on the sentencing, which is right before the RNC in a few days. I’ve heard the usual punishment for this kind of stuff is at most 4 years of prison, but for first time offenders it is usually suspended. So my guess is that it’s a big blob of nothing, again.

Then again, imagine being assigned as parole officer to Trump.

maynarkh ,

The problem is that in the meantime, he got elected to the presidency, served his term, irrevocably damaged the US’ international relations, incited an unsurrection, committed a bazillion other crimes, and looks poised to get to the presidency again. All the while we got through a Democratic term where they could build a fraction back up of what Trump destroyed while also fighting with their own failed politics (Biden is complicit in why student loans are a big problem now, and well there is the genocide thing).

I can understand the wheels of justice are slow and steady, but the fires of chaos are hot on its heels. I hope I’m wrong, but the US seems like it will elect a convicted felon to its highest office to both guide and represent it in this fucked up world we have right now.

maynarkh ,

I don’t think it’s the Secret Service or the logistics of the thing that’s the problem. They can just join the prison guards and work in their place in Trump’s ward. They don’t serve Trump, they serve the people. They can be Trump’s prison guards as well as his protectors.

The bigger problem is that I don’t imagine G7 leaders would be keen to attend a summit at Rikers, or that Trump wouldn’t cause a constitutional crisis every single minute deliberately.

Adequately for the crappy old Soviet artillery the Russians have.

The US should get back on that gay bomb project

I was going to ask “which head” but of course it’s vdL. It’s the shame of the union how far she managed to fail upwards.

Russians had flown out singers to Ukraine singing Gruppa Krovi to the soldiers. This shit goes across cultures.

English is actually quite easy. Yes, there is a lot of vocabulary, but almost no conjugations or declinations make it easy compared to some others. My native has 19 different cases with 2-3 variants each for tonal coherence, and 2 modes of full verb conjugation (with additional exceptions of course).

maynarkh ,

They are mostly logical, it’s actually permutations of 3 by 4 conditions.

Are there any EV cars without any "technology"?

Like the title says, are there any EVs that just have a Bluetooth radio and that’s it? Like a normal car, not a smartphone on wheels? If not, do you all think that this will actually happen at some point? This is the main reason why I can’t (and will never) buy an EV. I like to have actual buttons everywhere on my car. I...

maynarkh ,

Yes, most cars have had their own data connection for a while now. If I know correctly, it’s a requirement for Europe since you have to put that button to call emergency services in the car, so it has to have a GSM module, so effectively it has to have mobile data.

maynarkh ,

The ability for a car to call emergency services in the event of a crash, and thus the mobile / data connection required to do that, has been mandatory since 2018 in all new cars sold in the EU.

So there is no cost incentive not to have the internet connection in there, as it is a basic safety feature now, like seatbelts.

maynarkh ,

Well technically GDPR applies, but who knows if any cars are actually compliant.

maynarkh ,

On one side, what the fuck, that’s not how it’s supposed to work. On the other side, at least precedent doesn’t mean much in the EU.

maynarkh ,

How did the Russian rhetoric go about escalations? How is this not an escalation?

Hamas launches rocket attack towards Tel Aviv area (www.bbc.com)

Hamas says it has launched a rocket attack towards the Tel Aviv area in central Israel for the first time in nearly four months. At least eight rockets were launched from the Rafah area in southern Gaza and several were intercepted, the Israeli military says. No injuries have been reported.

maynarkh ,

The Soviets in WWII are not really an image you want to be compared to. They actually did commit multiple genocides in that era. Not against the Germans, I mean they did murder and rape a lot of people, but they were not motivated by the eradication of the German population. Those murders and rapes were “simply” war crimes.

So the battle of Berlin was not a genocide. Katyn and the Holodomor arguably were. Killing innocent civilians is “just” murder, a war crime. When Ben-Gvir speaks of fighting “human animals”, making Gaza a “slaughterhouse” and “erasing the Gaza Strip from the face of the earth”, that makes it into a genocide.

It’s the motivation, especially the explicit, professed motivation of the leadership that makes what Israel - and by the way, also Hamas, though less successfully - is doing genocide, not just “normal” war crimes.

maynarkh ,

Could they also include decision makers at big companies if their decisions are proven to be criminally negligent, self-serving, and result directly in a large number of deaths? I’m thinking like Boeing people.

maynarkh ,

At least the priorities are in the right place. Abortion rights have not been acted on for a century, climate change is hard, Ukraine can’t be helped, but the fundamental right for everyone to use their private jet anonymously has been protected.

maynarkh ,

It would be a real shame if the German union struck in sympathy.

maynarkh ,

“When we have a new product that has elements that we’re not sure how people will respond to, what do we do as a corporation?” he asked. “We market it as much as we can — we do all the things we can to essentially brainwash people into liking it before it actually comes out. I’d like to see the government doing this too.”

Under capitalism, production is obviously shaped by demand, and if something that is perceived bad is being produced, that is obviously because people vote with their wallets to do that. Obviously. See also why you personally are to blame for climate change for not recycling hard enough and paying for fuel.

maynarkh ,

I would only argue with this piece:

The money here ultimately comes from the company’s customers if they win (since it results in higher prices)

Prices have been divorced from costs and are more based on “what the market will bear”. This only would be true if markets were actually competitive, and the fines encompassed a large amount of the supply side, neither of which is true. Fines like this are borne by the company books.

maynarkh ,

If I heard correctly, it’s not even funding, but use of trademarks usually hinges on a favourable view on the MIC and the US military.

maynarkh ,

To be honest, watching news gives one more impetus for wanting to shoot people than playing Call of Duty.

maynarkh ,

I don’t think it was your average boomer who decided that the stock market should be the be-all-end-all of the whole economy.

Ron DeSantis' new target in his 'war on woke'? Colors, apparently (www.msnbc.com)

As part of DeSantis’ “Freedom Summer” initiative, the state’s transportation secretary, Jared W. Perdue, announced earlier this month that bridges in the state will have no choice but to be illuminated in red, white and blue from Memorial Day through Labor Day....

maynarkh ,

As The Washington Post reported:

The Ringling Causeway Bridge over Sarasota Bay usually lights up in rainbow colors for a week in June, and also marks other causes during the summer, such as orange for National Gun Awareness Month and yellow for Women’s Equality Day.

So I went WTF is “National Gun Awareness Month”, I mean who actually needs a month long reminder that the US is full of guns? So I went and apparently it’s National Gun Violence Awareness Day. Accurate reporting from the Washington Post, as always.

maynarkh ,

I wonder if they could get away with illuminating the whole bridge in red, since the normal street lights are white and the sky is blue. You know, for Labor Day.
