William Anders, Apollo 8 astronaut who took Earthrise photo, killed in plane crash (www.cbc.ca)

Retired major-general William Anders, the former Apollo 8 astronaut who took the iconic Earthrise photo showing the planet as a shadowed blue marble from space in 1968, was killed Friday when the plane he was piloting alone plummeted into the waters off the San Juan Islands in Washington state. He was 90....

Casey Handmer seems to think there’s still an opportunity here. There are updated versions of that post, but I think this was his first on the topic.

‘Exterminate the beasts’: How Israeli settlers took revenge for a murder in the West Bank (www.bbc.com)

What followed was a wave of shooting and arson attacks across 11 Palestinian villages in which a dozen homes and more than 100 cars were torched, thousands of animals were slaughtered, four people were shot dead and scores of others were seriously wounded.

It’s tough being an informed consumer of news given that we know both Israel and Hamas lie their asses off, so it’s basically equally likely:

  • Israel murdered more civilians for fun / to advance their genocide
  • there’s crystal clear video showing that the rockets were launched from these tents, or by people who were living in them (which, ignoring that Israel’s theft of land and brazen mass slaughter motivating these attacks, would traditionally make this a legitimate military target). Of course even in this case, a non-terrorist/genocidal country could use means to attack that are more selective. Israel just likes to specifically use non-selective attacks to cause as much collateral damage as possible%20to%20secure%20that%20end.).

It sucks.

MyEdgyAlt ,

Thanks, I hadn’t looked into this one in more detail.

MyEdgyAlt ,

BBC is saying Israel claims this one took out two Hamas officials, so it seems like a typical “why kill few Palestinian when kill many do trick” case.

MyEdgyAlt ,

Completely agreed. That said, this pre-October-7th article does list a person with the same name as one of the claimed targets of this attack giving statements on behalf of Hamas, so assuming they aren’t lying about having killed him, in this particular case the claims seem plausible. They attacked a Hamas member and included their preferred amount of collateral damage.

MyEdgyAlt ,

The other one, Yassin / Yasin Rabia. Which for all I know could also be like John Smith.

Senior Hamas member Yasin Rabia, responded to the attack, saying[…]

That was the name I saw in reports about the Rafah killings.

Gaza: After ICJ order to halt attacks on Rafah, Israel launches over 60 air raids on the city in 48 hours (euromedmonitor.org)

Palestinian Territory - Israel continues to ignore orders from the International Court of Justice (ICJ), including the Court’s most recent ruling. This ruling requires Israel to halt its military assault on the Rafah Governorate in the southern Gaza Strip and reopen the Rafah border crossing to facilitate the movement of...

You could link to resources on Jewish opposition to Zionism.

Until World War II, anti-Zionism was widespread among Jews for varying reasons. Orthodox Jews opposed Zionism on religious grounds, as preempting the Messiah, while many secular Jewish anti-Zionists identified more with ideals of the Enlightenment and saw Zionism as a reactionary ideology.

The whole article has a fantastic background. Basically, Zionism was considered sinful!

Hamas launches rocket attack towards Tel Aviv area (www.bbc.com)

Hamas says it has launched a rocket attack towards the Tel Aviv area in central Israel for the first time in nearly four months. At least eight rockets were launched from the Rafah area in southern Gaza and several were intercepted, the Israeli military says. No injuries have been reported.

MyEdgyAlt OP ,

Maybe more genocide will make Israel safe. Genocide is the best path to peace and security, right? 🤪

MyEdgyAlt OP ,

I upvoted you, because your point about the occupied West Bank is valid, but let’s be clear: Hamas is very much a problem. They haven’t held real elections in Gaza for close to 2 decades and have been in severe violent internal conflict with their Palestinian opposition.

Israel being genocidal maniacs doesn’t mean everyone shooting rockets at them is automatically a good guy.

MyEdgyAlt OP ,

Ah yes, nobody expelled anyone from anywhere in 1948.

The Deir Yassin massacre took place on April 9, 1948, when Zionist paramilitaries attacked the village of Deir Yassin near Jerusalem, Mandatory Palestine, killing at least 107 Palestinian villagers, including women and children. … The massacre was carried out despite the village having agreed to a non-aggression pact. … was a central component of the Nakba and the 1948 Palestinian expulsion and flight.

MyEdgyAlt OP ,

The DW documentary “Israel - Birth of a State” is very informative if you can find a way to watch it. It’s from earlier in 2023, by one of Germany’s major news outlets.

MyEdgyAlt OP ,

Ok, after some more reading about the government of Palestine, this is not a completely unreasonable position. Thanks for pointing out the lack of elections in the occupied West Bank too.

The Samson Option?

We possess several hundred atomic warheads and rockets and can launch them at targets in all directions, perhaps even at Rome. Most European capitals are targets for our air force. Let me quote General Moshe Dayan: ‘Israel must be like a mad dog, too dangerous to bother.’ I consider it all hopeless at this point. We shall have to try to prevent things from coming to that, if at all possible. Our armed forces, however, are not the thirtieth strongest in the world, but rather the second or third. We have the capability to take the world down with us. And I can assure you that that will happen before Israel goes under.

Or maybe you prefer:

What would serve the Jew-hating world better in repayment for thousands of years of massacres but a Nuclear Winter. Or invite all those tut-tutting European statesmen and peace activists to join us in the ovens? For the first time in history, a people facing extermination while the world either cackles or looks away—unlike the Armenians, Tibetans, World War II European Jews or Rwandans—have the power to destroy the world. The ultimate justice?

While some of them have expressed desire for beachfront houses in Gaza, I think the parent was referring to lebensraum. You may also consider whether there’s any similarities to a potential Final Solution to the Palestinian Question. Maybe instead of shipping the Palestinians to Madagascar they’ll ship them to Egypt or Jordan or wherever (for now they’ve concentrated them in camps around Rafah).

But remember, per the IHRA definition of antisemitism, discussing similarities between the acts of Nazis and the acts of Israel is antisemitic.

MyEdgyAlt ,

How did you choose that excerpt? The headline and most of the contents are about Israeli violence. The preceding sentence immediately before your excerpt is this:

The head of the Israeli Shin Bet domestic security service was recently quoted as warning that the spike in settler attacks was in turn driving Palestinians to attack Israelis saying: “Jewish terror incites Palestinian terror.”

And the rest of that paragraph is about various revenge attacks.

“Investigating”

MyEdgyAlt , (edited )

Nah, preventing humanitarian assistance to Palestinians is helpful in their goals of beachfront settlements. Remember when they drove a bulldozer over that American lady? Israel DGAF. You’re either with them, or you’re Hamas/an antisemite.

MyEdgyAlt ,

Have you ever wondered what those people might have experienced that would lead them to hate Israel so much?

What games can you not get into because they feel too outdated?

Are there games that you tried but just couldn’t get into because they feel outdated? Games that, in theory, you would enjoy, but don’t because the controls, graphics, writing, or mechanics just don’t feel good anymore. Games that, compared to today, just don’t hold up to your standards....

MyEdgyAlt ,

I actually really enjoyed replaying it recently after many many years. Other than the dialog, what bugs you about it?

By the way, the engine replacement is really good.

MyEdgyAlt ,

You don’t have to be a jerk about it. And after reading about this briefly I think that your presentation is misleading (and possibly factually incorrect; I didn’t immediately find sources that ISIS terrorists died from chemical exposure, though I didn’t look long).

Wikipedia says weapons there were being decommissioned, and The Guardian says when ISIS took the facility the US wasn’t particularly concerned because there was nothing usable or intact there.. We didn’t invade Iraq for decommissioning old weapons.

And it was not far-fetched that Hamas could have been using tunnels under hospitals as a command center. Most people just don’t think attacking the hospital on the surface is justified even if so, since the people on the surface had no way of avoiding it. But any excuse to ethnically cleanse Palestine will do for right-wing Israelis.

MyEdgyAlt ,

I’ve found it so far on the Daily Mail, but not on any non-tabloid sources yet.

Isn’t it just as likely Israeli bombings and assaults killed them?

MyEdgyAlt ,

And despite that system we execute plenty of innocent problem on death row 😬

MyEdgyAlt ,

Yeah, the store should just open when it opens and close when it closes, and if shift B shows up an hour after shift A chooses to go home, so be it!

MyEdgyAlt ,

Hmm, planning would require coordination. The shift A team would need to agree to stay until the shift B team expects to arrive. How could we make sure they’re on the same page?

Maybe they could do it based on the sun being at a certain spot in the sky? That might be hard on cloudy days. Maybe we could invent a device that tells us approximately where the sun would be if we could see it. We could call it “cock” like roosters that crow to wake us up…but that might make 12 year olds chuckle so how about we call it a “clock” and then fixate on the number it shows?

(If you were being sarcastic / facetious in your initial post I apologize, but I took your original post as one of the “hurr durr just ignore the clock” posts some people have been making, which completely fail to recognize why we do make ourselves slaves to the clock).

MyEdgyAlt ,

Why should the people in the Middle East suffer because of what nazi Germany did?

MyEdgyAlt ,

Because I know how to use vim, and haven’t really tried vscode. I doubt there are any real advantages of vim other than inertia, and as I understand vscode plugins / extensions could give me vim keybindings if I wanted them. I’ll try it some day.

MyEdgyAlt ,

Some do; others think it’s a valid argument because they see their media sources (or at least people around them) do it.

Without regard to the rest of your comment, somehow the lack of guns works ok in Europe and they aren’t all exactly equally sized.

MyEdgyAlt ,

I did, and multiple friends are either actively working on doing the same or have expressed interest but have constraints (e.g. an autistic child who found a school / therapist they like, or non-ASD kids in hard age ranges to move).

Contributing to a pro-birth, anti-democracy, anti-reasonable-gun-control, transphobic economy in a hot humid climate that’s getting worse made no sense.

Texas literally banned ensuring workers get 10 minute water breaks every four hours. They banned cities voting to protect their own trees. Local democracies try to make things better and Texas says no. All the while, Texas refuses to employ a fair taxation strategy for less-urban areas, so blue cities have to fund the red counties’ school districts. Anybody not actively fighting to improve the political situation there should leave.

I haven’t missed the weather at all.

You’re underwater on a mortgage - this may not be catastrophic if you have a COVID interest rate and the place is rentable. Is that an option?

Why do you think a life created by sexual assault is less valuable than a life created otherwise? Isn’t the resulting life the same?

Thinking this through might help you understand the tradeoffs behind most abortions. Pregnancy is dangerous, childbirth is dangerous, parenting is incredibly difficult.

A child could push a family into poverty and devastate siblings’ futures. How do you evaluate the harm caused by that against the harm caused by being forced to carry a child produced by sexual assault?
