American Bible Society to close its $60 million museum after 3 years (www.inquirer.com)

The museum created by the American Bible Society in July 2021 said it would be open to visitors until March 28. The Christian ministry nonprofit that translates Bibles and sends them around the world has recently been besieged with challenges including layoffs, funding troubles, and five CEO changes within two years.

“Structural limitations”? What were they trying to do?

I went to what I thought was a job interview, but they were really just recruiting people to sell Cutco stuff. I was still pretty excited about it, because I’d never heard of Cutco before. When I got home, Dad explained that Cutco was basically a pyramid scheme.

They almost got me. They had rented space in an office park and everything; it wasn’t at some dude’s house. The interview seemed legit… to a young and clueless college student, anyway.

Ah, I see. I was going to say that your mistake was only making one. Never mind.

“For Spring Break, I wanna go somewhere run by a wannabe fascist dictator who hates everyone that isn’t a straight, white, rich Christian male!”

Those dipshit college kids deserve what they get.

Yeah. I live in Jersey, and our beaches are awesome, but they are sorely lacking in WARM at this time of year.

Just a few hours ago, I had to listen to a coworker try and explain how wearing a mask or isolating during COVID had weakened another coworker’s immune system. By saying “but COVID was years ago”, I only lengthened the nonsensical lecture.

I must say, though, that the woman is a sweetheart… unless you mention COVID or politics.

Only if Fox “News” made her genuinely believe that it was for my own good. She’d fall for it then. If not, though, then god help whoever fucked with someone she cared about.

Microsoft is once again injecting pop-up ads into Google Chrome on Windows in a bid to get people to switch to Bing (www.theverge.com)

The software giant first introduced malware-like pop-up ads last year with a prompt that appeared over the top of other apps and windows. After pausing that notification to address “unintended behavior,” the pop-ups have returned again on Windows 10 and 11....

Because Linux has a terrible reputation and has no PR or advertising. People think Linux is overly complicated, has WAY too many distributions to choose from, and there’s absolutely no tech support besides what you can find geeks arguing about on a forum.

Yeah, I was talking about perception more than reality

The Cloud Forest at Pretty River Valley, Ontario (lemmy.world)

Posted this in a random thread yesterday but figured it probably deserved more views. This is from a rainy day last August, near the peak at Pretty River Valley Provincial Park, Ontario, on the Niagara Escarpment. I watched the clouds rolling in, and then they rolled into and through the forest, creating an absolutely magical...

Pretty River Valley is probably the least imaginative name they could have given it, but it’s accurate. Sometimes simplicity is best.

Lyft and Uber say they will leave Minneapolis after city council forces them to pay drivers more (apnews.com)

Lyft and Uber said they will cease operations in Minneapolis after the city’s council voted Thursday to override a mayoral veto and require that ride-hailing services increase driver wages to the equivalent of the local minimum wage of $15.57 an hour....

@magnetosphere@fedia.io avatar

Yup. If they refuse to pay minimum wage, they’re exploiting your citizens who drive for them. Let them leave.

Why do people downvote posts like this? What’s the problem? It’s funny, true, and in the right community.

I’d love it if courts had the power to seriously enforce shit like this. Fail to meet a deadline that’s been agreed upon by all parties? Okay, then officers will arrest you and put you in jail until you do.

That’s just my immediate, angry reaction, though. It doesn’t solve the core problem, which is that rich people are above the law.

Did these kids not understand that the IDF is completely unreasonable and will look for any excuse to use excessive force? I have total sympathy for the family of the victim, but those kids who encouraged him need a serious talk… not to mention the IDF sniper, but that won’t happen.

Had to read the story to see if the situation really is as weird and pathetic as the headline makes it sound.

It is, but worse. For starters, the guy is 80.

I might be more in favor of this ban if it wasn’t in the hands of a bunch of stodgy, bickering, out-of-touch morons who don’t understand technology.

I’m especially cynical when it comes to the “cure all human diseases” part.

You want to manage a disease. Make it tolerable and survivable. That way, you’ve got a patient customer for life, and you can milk them for decades.

Edit: I’m talking from the point of view of an asshole capitalist, folks.

Is it bad that I, an American citizen, consider this small potatoes?

Edit: guess so. Oh well. I’m too worried about my own country becoming a theocratic dictatorship. Even major drug issues like this seem almost quaint in comparison.

Pointing out how terrible capitalism is.

Edit: I’m making fun of myself here, folks, because I do it too!
