its a bit verbose but my preference is rm -r --interactive=never directoryname

i really try to avoid rf for myself

mactan ,

not to do the “read the manual” thing, but the manual is linked from archwiki and has at least 5 bullet points of limitations and all the whys to go with them

mactan ,

ugh kurtzman-trek

mactan ,

I remain of the opinion that New Trek has some of the most annoying sci-fi fan service outside of Star Wars. given every opportunity there’s references to other trek things crammed in everywhere

mactan ,

for what it’s worth the pulsaudio APIs aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. keeping an eye on the replies out of curiosity though

mactan ,

they have come a long way since the old pi 2 that would max out it’s cpu just wiggling the mouse around on the desktop

Do I Need to Watch Discovery To Enjoy SNW?

Hi all! Long time Star Trek fan here with my first post. I’m gonna start out by saying that I promise I’m not a hater of Discovery at all. It just has done nothing for me and from what I read, has not made any changes that would have solved my personal issues with it. I’m fine with others liking it and honestly wish that I...

mactan ,

hell I think disco has strained my enjoyment of trek in general it’s that type of show

mactan ,

looking forward to more things using pipewire camera, I don’t want to have to think about v4l again

[QUESTION] Flatpak or AUR?

I’ve been using arch for a while now and I always used Flatpaks for proprietary software that might do some creepy shit because Flatpaks are supposed to be sandboxed (e.g. Steam). And Flatpaks always worked flawlessly OOTB for me. AUR for things I trust. I’ve read on the internet how people prefer AUR over Flatpaks. Why? And...

mactan ,

whenever somebody brings up some terribly ancient Debian/buntu distro with outdated packages we end up having them use a .deb instead since the ppa is long gone and it’s been fine. wild that they’re often stuck on 4 year old packages though

mactan ,

people can’t handle installing windows, they won’t try anything else en masse either

DISCO S5 has been phenomenal

Two episodes to go. I’m gutted this is going to be the end, just as the show truly found its stride and grew the beard. Feels a lot like the end of Enterprise. Every season has been better than the last, and the earlier episodes were pretty good. I recently started rewatching S1 after getting an IRL friend into it and he’s...

mactan ,

love the characters and casting but the narratives of disco leave me wanting something else

mactan ,

year of the Linux desktop before gimp 3

mactan ,

oof not sure about that, partial upgrade can be a doozy

mactan ,

the deck isn’t some server that needs > 100% uptime for years. Debian is poopoo for bleeding edge game releases, especially any alpha/beta/early access stuff

mactan ,

I remember I used to worry about latency with these but then I found out how bad YouTube streams are

mactan ,
mactan ,

invoking them is kind of a pain, my sole experience with it was meson/ninja using it but then that default was removed and I’ve never been able to put it back to satisfy my curiosity of how it’s done

mactan ,

what is the actual use case of LTS on regular desktop non-workstation anyway?

mactan ,

it’s software, every update can mess up your system. your only guaranteed good media is the install ISO, after that it’s only as good as the packager, even for LTS

mactan ,

LTS ISO aren’t guaranteed to work? isn’t that the point, install once and run forever?

mactan ,

missing a mountain of accessibility tools

mactan ,

federated identity good, centralized identity maybe not so good

mactan ,

you’re missing a directory from your PATH if you have to do that. flatpak Has friendly names

mactan ,

is spectacle supposed to be able to copy to clipboard on Wayland or not really? hasn’t worked for me on 6

mactan ,

can claw my xkcd 1172 from my cold dead hands /sarcasm

mactan ,

this is great, my lug has a script we have to share around for new Linux users to increase this and it will be nice with more distros having this set high by default

mactan ,

last I looked I think it’s even easier on heroic than lutris git. soonTM

Can you tell excel sheets which were created using a pirated version of MS Office?

My friend works for a company which requires her to use Microsoft specific application, she didn’t really want to switch to Win 11 and choose to just use Wine Linux package and install a 2016 version of MS office on her Linux laptop. That’s all well and good, but this company she is working for servers other clients at...

mactan ,

if every instance of dolphin UI doesn’t lock up when I’m doing file operations across NFS that sure would be nice

mactan ,

I like running mesa git for a few specific games but I have zero desire to install it for my system so I install it to /opt and invoke the right environment variable to use it from there instead

mactan ,

like wine patch notes, often someone reports that an old bug on a very old product seems to have gone away at some point so it gets reported as fixed, even if it’s not something that had to be specifically looked at by anybody

mactan ,

tbh I just assume that despite GDPR or CCPA any images I put up are there forever, it’s not like the tech is that different in the fediverse from anywhere else. nowhere is going to be scrubbing their storage drive blocks on delete if it even can be deleted

mactan ,

yt creators really don’t have a choice, if they deviate from the stuff that the algorithm likes it kills the channel

mactan ,

I think you missed the critical word “deviate” if you stick to the same thing it works, whatever it is

Punctuality Matters: Using Linux to Manage Time-Critical Situations (www.kdab.com)

The robustness of Linux is widely acknowledged, but it can’t quite match the microsecond management of a real-time operating system (RTOS) for time critical situations such as CNC machine instructions, vehicular control, or health sensor collection. If your software must record, manage, or control events within a narrow and...

mactan ,

I remember hearing about this in the context of space missions, Linux just isn’t a good fit for critical systems

mactan ,

I have heard it was “disabled” but the comment wasn’t substantiated. enabling Wayland on regular wine 9 is no more than a registry edit and an env variable

mactan ,

think I might skip it. I made the mistake of watching Picard and I really wish I could forget

mactan ,

my system sets the wrong bitrate for a device but I was able to configure it, you may want to browse the wireplumber wiki and see if its config options can meet your use case

mactan ,

heh, I’m almost surprised I can still see lemmy world from here

mactan ,

been using wire plumber ever since it was default on arch. I wish my system defaulted to the right bitrate for my dac/headphones but it was simple enough to configure myself

mactan ,

for example, if GRUB changes the syntax of the config file, then the mismatching configuration can result in an unbootable system. it’s so annoying because all it needs is a script to run automatically any time pacman sees that grub got an update. it just has to rerun grub-mkconfig
