You can get 3.5mm to (whatever usb port) that will as far as I know work in every phone. Just because it doesn’t have a dedicated port doesn’t mean you can’t wire in your headphones.

not if you want to charge it as well.

Lol, bring on your down votes. I bet if you surveyed a hundred random people on the street if they really want a headphone port on your phone and are committed to using it you’d get less than ten people, definitely less than 20. It’s not realistic to support every legacy hardware function on a modern device because a few tech enthusiasts want it, especially when there’s a very easy way to support it.

If you’re the only option with a headphone jack that’s a guaranteed 10% of the market buying your device. More if you also include other things tech enthusiasts want that are no longer widely available.

lightnsfw ,

Simply put, if companies determined the market need for 3.5mm port was valuable enough they’d leave it on there.

The reason it’s not “valuable” is that they want to force people to buy expensive earbuds every year when they crap out. This is demonstrated by the fact that none of these phones that have removed it have added anything new in it’s place and they’ve only gotten more expensive. Practically every phone on the market is just a copycat phone, camera, social media browsing device. Maybe a few have a stylus. The only thing that differentiates them is specs. My 6 year old phone has more features than anything available today and I dread finally reaching the point where my work apps stop functioning due to it’s age and I have to downgrade to some garbage that can’t do half the things I used to.

lightnsfw ,

Their point was that archive.org is going to get fucked in court.

lightnsfw ,

I don’t see anything pro IP in their comment. They just stated the reality of the situation.

lightnsfw ,

Couldn’t they just *2 all the bills from before this was ran and straighten it out?

lightnsfw ,

Well I wouldn’t want to bother her.

lightnsfw ,

No. I would be happy and awesome at doing pretty much any ground level technical work but thanks to corporate greed and inflation I can’t afford to live on what I’d make doing any of those. So I had to take promotions to roles that are more about communicating with a bunch of different people to have them do stuff while fielding questions from leadership about why shit wasn’t done on time. This stresses me the fuck out and leaves me too mentally drained at the end of the day to do any personal projects and I’m still can’t even afford to actually own a home.

lightnsfw ,

I’ve looked but haven’t found anything that pays enough. Which in itself is a pain in the ass because no one just says what a position is paying until you go through an application and interview.

lightnsfw ,

Searching for random stuff on Yahoo with my friend when I was in 5th grade.

lightnsfw ,

I had to take a van that a baby had thrown up in out in the middle of the summer to diagnose a vibration issue. That was the worst smell I have ever smelt. I still remember it sometimes and it’s been a decade since then.

lightnsfw ,

My math teacher one year made a rule that if you skipped more than 3 problems on the homework you got a zero on it. This was because she was assigning 80-100 problems a night and I had only been completing just doing enough to get a passing grade because I didn’t have an hour to spend just on math every night.

lightnsfw ,

Yea, that’s what I ended up doing. It was stupid.

lightnsfw ,

Yea, I was always good at math but shit like that made me hate it. Like you said I either understood the concept or I didn’t. Having a higher volume of problems wasn’t going to help. The funny thing was, later on in high school, my english teacher gave me a list of all the assignments we would have that semester with how many points they were worth so I went through and figured out what I would be a able to skip (pretty much all the stuff that I’d have to get in front of the class for) and still pass. She did not give a shit about it other than initially being concerned that I was failing really hard for a while because most of what I skipped was at the beginning. I told her what I was doing and she was just like “… well ok if that’s what you want to do…”. I

lightnsfw ,

I had an iPad for a while and it definitely bothered me. Really just about everything did. It felt like I had to fight with it to do just about anything I wanted to do.

lightnsfw ,

I like working from the office but I agree the rest of you all should wfh so I can have the roads and office building to myself.

lightnsfw ,

Just cut up the model into a million individual parts and post them on thingiverse so everyone on that site that already has a 3d printer can print one out and mail it to baltimore. EZ

lightnsfw ,

By giving you a dry promotion, it becomes easier to give you a fat raise during the compensation review season.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

lightnsfw ,

I like imperial for big things. like you said it’s easier. For small things like 3d printing and such I prefer metric (basically anything with increments smaller than 1/16"). It just depends on what scale you need to work on.

lightnsfw ,

Get a job where you have to deal with people all day. Then by the end of the day you’ll hate them and just want to go home and be by yourself.

lightnsfw ,

I used to work helpdesk for a company that would send out informational emails to users from the ticketing systems email address. We always found out they did this when our ticket queue was suddenly flooded with a thousand email tickets that were just out of office messages. It was nice for us because our metrics were based on closing tickets but the fact that they never fixed the issue after we reported it was annoying.

lightnsfw ,

That happened to me when I asked why it was okay to joke about murdering billionaires (and gave them examples that had been up for days with no consequences) but I get suspended for joking about murdering child molesters. If you’re going to pick and choose who you care about why would child molesters make the cut over pretty much any other demo?

lightnsfw ,

Yet, because of stuff like Chernobyl and Fukushima, everyone seems to hate it.

Is that a bad reason really? When nuclear goes bad it goes really bad and it can go bad due to human error which is something that will always be present. When a solar panel catastrophically fails it doesn’t render the surrounding environment uninhabitable for decades.

lightnsfw ,

I’m not just talking about deaths though. If a bad nuclear accident happens it makes a large part of the surrounding area uninhabitable and the fallout in the air can cause long term very nasty health problems for a lot of people. If that happened near a big city the results would be devastating. Considering that the other clean energy options are comparable in terms of danger per output during general operation it just doesn’t seem worth it. Obviously I’m not a nuclear engineer and maybe I need to read up on it more but that’s my current thoughts on the matter.

As for the rarity, they may be but we are operating on an indefinite time scale. Sooner or later something is going to happen again with how complex those things are. Especially with corporations involved that are more concerned with making their stocks go up than keeping people safe. Here’s a better explanation of what I’m talking about - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/System_accident

Therapy is expensive, I’d have to make appointments, leave my home during my free time, talk about myself to someone, and probably won’t help because my problems are external. No thanks.

Buying a new laptop and installing an OS is a relatively simple and inexpensive process that is actually rewarding.

lightnsfw ,

Okay so multiply all the other problems I listed by how many therapists I have to try and no they can’t solve my problems unless they’re gonna buy me a house or pay off my debts or something so I can actually get ahead financially.

lightnsfw ,

No, the steps would probably be more along the lines of refreshing your resume, maybe setting up an appointment to have it professionally reviewed, getting a habit of applying for jobs going, stuff that materially contributes to having more money. A therapist might tell you that overthrowing the rich is a little too vague a plan to actually act on.

So the solution the therapist has is to hire a career counselor? That’s not them solving anything, that’s them passing the buck to someone else that will cost me even more money and time. Beside the fact that I already know how to ladder climb and am currently in a position that pays well above what most of my peers are making and is above the credentials I have on paper so I have to rely on networking for any new opportunities (which again i’m doing better than most of my network so they don’t have a lot to offer at this point). There really isn’t anywhere for me to go up from here without moving to a place that is even more expensive to live.

The real issue is that inflation is out of control and housing is too expensive. My best bet of ever owning a home is waiting for my parents to die and inherit theirs and that thing is shitty new construction that was slapped together as quickly and cheaply as possible and will probably be falling apart by then.

lightnsfw ,

By credentials I mean a degree and experience with particular tasks/applications. I can’t just change that on my resume if I don’t have it.

lightnsfw ,

If I’m grifting people into giving me money to prove it’s flat I’ll keep doubling down until that teat runs dry.

lightnsfw ,

I’ve had very little issues with chinese sellers personally. The two times I did they quickly resolved the issue to my satisfaction. That’s more than I can say for all the times I had issues with American sellers.

lightnsfw ,

But some time ago, several chinese seller tried to fool me in direct messaging saying “close the appelation and I’ll return money to your PayPal”

I’ve had American sellers do the same thing on Amazon. I’ve had them lie about a product being new on their listing and refuse to correct the mistake only to try to bribe me to take my bad review of them down (even then their offer wasn’t sufficient to fix my problem). It’s not about nationality, it’s just scumbags being scumbags and those come from all nations.

lightnsfw ,

Second time: I received one of those emails with a password in the subject. It looked familiar, and was in fact an (old) password I had used. Someone took a hacked DB and just fired off countless emails with the passwords to the matching email addresses. But the tone of the email was what spooked me. It said, I have had full access to all your emails, I have figured out how to reset accounts and hacked into your webcam and have some very interesting photos. Either you pay this amount to this bitcoin address or I send the photos to all your contacts and your life will be ruined.

I got one of those once. They were demanding that I send them bitcoins. I knew it was a scam because I never used a computer with a webcam while doing anything that would have provided them interesting pictures. I didn’t know how to buy bitcoins anyway so I was just like “welp, if that turns out to be real enjoy looking at my nudes family and friends”. I look good naked anyway.

lightnsfw ,

Yes I liked having pictures of my dead pets and relatives from 10 years ago but I wasn’t going to ever look at them again. I have my memories and that’s enough.

I used to think like this but I’ve found that going through those old pictures is a good way to bring up memories you wouldn’t otherwise think about again. I like to do that when I’m in a funk and it really helps to clear my head of nasty emotions.

lightnsfw ,

My grandparents did it for about a decade while they traveled the country. That was the happiest I ever knew them to be. It did leave them in a really bad spot financially when they were to old to do it anymore though.

lightnsfw ,

Keep in mind that all the people who are just happily going about their day to day with it and not having issues are probably not posting. The only reason most people make posts is to complain about something or get assistance troubleshooting an issue. It also really depends on what all you want to do with it.

lightnsfw ,

trying to manufacture dissent and influence the public narrative

That shit is all over American social media too buddy. If that’s the issue it should all be banned.

lightnsfw ,

Texting. My parents and sister in law keep me in the loop of what’s going on with everyone else. I’ve never had a Facebook and they all know how to get in touch with me if they want to. Half of them won’t even talk to the other half due to drama people started on Facebook anyway and that was years before all the Trump shit started. Social media is the worst thing that ever happened to society.

lightnsfw ,

I’m an analyst. I’ve never analyzed anything.

It’s Microsoft. There’s always more bugs on the way.

How do I properly resize my LVM partitions when it is inside LUKS?

Do I have to boot in a USB to do it or can it be done while the crypt is open/being used? I need to resize my root partition.

@linux

lightnsfw ,

golinuxcloud.com/resize-luks-partition-shrink-ext…

Here’s a fairly detailed article about it.

lightnsfw ,

Whiskey sour (use egg white)

I’ve never heard of putting an egg white in those. What does that do?

lightnsfw ,

That sounds pretty gross to be honest. Is it like meringue?

lightnsfw ,

I got a Leatherman Skeletool like 11 years ago and use it almost every day. It’s probably the best bang for my buck from any purchase I’ve ever made.

lightnsfw ,

Chase down a shoplifter and ask them to stab you. Then sue the fuck out of your employer.

lightnsfw ,

New job performance anxiety has me stressed AF. Doing better than last week at least. Got some stuff done over the weekend to which is nice.

lightnsfw ,

When I re-read Ender’s Game as an adult it felt pretty mary-sueish the second time. I got why I loved it as a kid because the smart socially maladjusted kid (omg he’s just like me) was kicking everyone’s ass and being great at everything. As an adult it seemed a little much. Then again maybe I’m just projecting the hatred I have for my past self onto the book.

lightnsfw ,

But I’m not creative or interesting enough to make content. I’m barely qualified to comment in other people’s posts.

lightnsfw ,

Even the fertilizer thing is arguably bad. It’s allowed the population of the world to explode at an exponential rate and burn through resources even faster rather than be capped at a much more manageable level.

lightnsfw ,

Even more are going to starve when we run out of fossil fuels and can no longer sustain the agriculture required to feed the now massively inflated population. Not to mention all the other damage having so many more people is doing to the world that is also probably going to kill us even if we solve the resource problem.
