I was reading the whole thing going “oh Jesus please not one of us” then reached the part where he’s just a fuckwit and breathed a sigh of relief.

khannie ,
@khannie@lemmy.world avatar

Here’s my prediction for historical purposes:

  • In the next 10 years the three Baltic nations will be invaded
  • it’s done via North West Russia, Belarus and Kaliningrad simultaneously
  • This leaves only the tiny border with Poland to defend for those states if it’s successful because subs are gonna sub any coastal attempt at a D-Day
  • Tactical, low yield nukes will be used to deter future responses because NATO has shown a strategic weakness on their desire to avoid escalation
  • It’s coordinated with an invasion of Taiwan to spread the West thin

That’s it. That’s my prediction based on having lived through the cold war and being interested in history.

I really fucking hope I’m wrong.

khannie ,
@khannie@lemmy.world avatar

I feel like it’s an inevitability, personally. They’ll call it territorial defense, given their claims on Donetsk and Luhansk and / or in the opening shots of a NATO war to show they mean business.

khannie ,
@khannie@lemmy.world avatar

I hear you but Russia has made it clear that any existential threat will result in nuclear war so that rules out going onto their internationally recognised land without risking that.

Taking back invaded land is a different matter as we’ve seen.

Edit: And I’ve limited understanding on this but I thought Belarus had already agreed to become part of the Russian federation. I hold out hope they’ll move back to democracy and agree that would definitely change things strategically.

you are querying a crowd on Lemmy that is going to be biased towards programmer / engineer types that tend to function well in their world due to compulsive features often considered pathologic by others.

I feel personally attacked. :D

Edit: also to answer the question. Yes I absolutely arrange things on the checkout belt.

I group these items: Liquids. Fridge. Cans and bottles. Fruit and veg, heavier ones first so the potatoes don’t crush the berries. Frozen gear near fridge gear. Chemicals / cleaning gear separate.

I should add that I’m buying for a lot of people so the shopping trips tend to be large and there would be a full bag of most of those groupings.

khannie ,
@khannie@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah it’s clear from the number of killed Russian generals in precision strikes in Ukraine that Western intel capability far exceeds Russia’s but having been given the heads up, to then ignore it and for the perpetrators to get away is an incredibly weak look for someone who wants to be seen as a strong man.

China bans Facebook, Google, etc.

Millions of Americans walking around with spying devices for the Chinese government seems like something to be concerned about.

All of that was long before Leo’s time.

Apparently he’s always said he would leave politics before 50. He sounded like he didn’t feel like he was the best candidate to lead their party into the next election (where they will likely be slaughtered) but it’s some time away yet.

khannie ,
@khannie@lemmy.world avatar

They already have quite specific giving options. I’m pretty sure they would be happy to add a “destroy oil refinery output” one.

Biden backs Schumer after senator calls for new elections in Israel (apnews.com)

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden expressed support Friday for Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer after the senator called for new elections in Israel, the latest sign that the U.S. relationship with its closest Middle East ally is careening toward fracture over the war in Gaza....

khannie ,
@khannie@lemmy.world avatar

Probably, but it makes your dinner a bit more spicy on a Friday evening to have a leading Jewish Democrat ask for it (because it’s a completely reasonable ask at the current time).

If Bibi isn’t reelected three thing seem likely:

  • Bibi’s bollixed and he knows it
  • We’re hopefully going to see someone the rest of the world can actually work with getting elected who will balance Israel’s right to self defence against the horrors we’re all looking at
  • It’ll soothe a lot of US dem voters who are completely horrified at the current situation

Fingers crossed!

khannie ,
@khannie@lemmy.world avatar

Ah you can always rely on Bernie. He’s obviously not as senior as Schumer but he called it first.

khannie ,
@khannie@lemmy.world avatar

Oh not at all! I wasn’t calling you out in any way. My first instinct was the same as yours and then I thought “Wait…What about Bernie?” but I had to google it.

khannie ,
@khannie@lemmy.world avatar

For him to come out means a lot.

Definitely. And no offense to Bernie, because he’s an absolute gentleman, but if we’re honest it means more for Schumer to.

Austria eliminated its inheritance tax in 2008

What? Why?

khannie ,
@khannie@lemmy.world avatar

For the ultra-wealthy it should be mandatory.

Yeah, I was more thinking generational wealth like billionaire kids. It seems crazy not to tax that.

khannie ,
@khannie@lemmy.world avatar

I learned recently enough that this is because the Reagan administration came up with the (in fairness, an absolutely genius move given their political viewpoint) the great idea of calling it a “death tax”.

khannie ,
@khannie@lemmy.world avatar

I mean, defending the borders of a sovereign, democratic state from invasion, rape, murder and genocide seems like “something useful” to me. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Jaaayyyysus…All you ever do is come into these threads repeating “Ukraine can’t win without foreign troops on the ground” over and over and over.

4 times in the last 2 days by my quick check. (edit: sorry, 5 and more if we go back to 3 days)

Alright, alright. We heard you. You can stop saying it now.

it’s a military state under martial law

Every state for the last 2500 years (and probably before) has had the possibility martial law and every democracy in the world has it now. Sometimes martial law is necessary, like when people come to rape your sister and murder your grandmother and wipe out your culture.

It does not make a country “not a democracy anymore” to use it appropriately and there is no question that it’s being used appropriately here.

khannie ,
@khannie@lemmy.world avatar

It’s a little easier to understand if you imagine you have someone confined in a small space, like a ghetto for example, and you really hate them and you’re in charge of feeding them. I’ve seen it once before in history somewhere. A lot of people starved.

And lest anyone dare think I’m antisemitic, some of my favourite people in this world are Jewish. You can be Jewish and still a sociopathic cunt hair, be recognised for it and that recognition not be antisemitic. The two are not mutually exclusive.

Sorry, I’m just very upset after reading about the anasthetic-less amputations on kids above.

If you've been following my medieval armor and cosplay stuff please read this! (lemmy.world)

I won’t be posting to lemmy anymore. I was using liftoff, and now that that’s dead I really can’t be bothered to learn another client. I post most of my content to my instagram now. If you are interested thats www.instagram.com/chamrsdeluxe...

khannie ,
@khannie@lemmy.world avatar

All clients do things differently. When liftoff died I had to choose another client and went with Voyager. It’s very good but not as nice to use by any stretch and I’d gotten very used to the liftoff way of doing things.

So yeah, there is a learning process in switching clients.

khannie ,
@khannie@lemmy.world avatar

True. It’s a hurdle but not insurmountable by any means.

Things that are bugging me about voyager having really loved liftoff are positioning of buttons, lack of avatars, lack of poster name without viewing the post, weird buttons that feel like they’re probably for iOS and lack of single hand navigation. Still as you say the basics are the same and I’m still here but I was willing to eat the cost.

khannie ,
@khannie@lemmy.world avatar

Totally agree. One of the really cool things I’ve seen on here is people acknowledge being wrong instead of being cranky shites about it.

Not only is it OK to be wrong but it’s absolutely brilliant to acknowledge it.

Love the quality of discussion here.

khannie ,
@khannie@lemmy.world avatar

This may be wrong but I believe there’s a fairly low file size limit so that may be it. PNG files tend to be larger for example.

Calling the PRESIDENT OF CHINA

I think you mean the dictator in charge of the dictatorship that is China.

the PRC is a socialist nation

Ha! It absolutely is not. It once was. Now there are far more socialist leaning countries in Europe.

I would bet money you’ve never stepped foot in the place and if you have you’ve never gotten to know a Chinese person well enough to learn the truth about the “socialist paradise” you’ve imagined up in your mind.

one side is fighting to stop imperal expantion on its boarder (Russia) and the other is mostly Nazis who are doing a genocide (Ukraine)

Are you talking about the dictator run, expansionist, imperialist invading side that did this in Chechnya and has committed a raft of well documented war crimes?

https://lemmy.world/pictrs/image/96c6ecc9-bf2e-44c8-9e66-d1174a0140eb.jpeg

khannie ,

khannie ,
@khannie@lemmy.world avatar

Will you admit you’re wrong when Russia does?

I don’t think so.

khannie ,
@khannie@lemmy.world avatar

I’ll try. The vote was on two issues: wording to replace arcane references to women’s place in the home / definition of a family and responsibility of care.

On both the wording was badly thought out and left a lot of room for interpretation / future court cases. There were fairly hot debates among legal folks who then caused average folks to be wary.

The second one smelled like the state trying to wash it’s burden of care, particularly for the elderly.

I voted yes / no as did more or less everyone I know so I’m obviously in a little bubble as I expected the family one to pass based on my bubble.

I felt that while the wording on the family one was a bit shite it was still better than what’s currently in there and that it was important to recognise non-standard families as entirely legitimate. I expect a better worded version to come before the people in future (all constitutional changes require a vote).

The care one was an easy no for me and everyone else apparently. Highest no vote in any referendum in the history of the state.

khannie ,
@khannie@lemmy.world avatar

Then the Taoiseach went on TV and the clip circulated of him laughing at the idea the State should support and care for its citizens. I reckon any on the fence were pushed to No on that alone.

He really let the mask slip. It was disgusting to watch. The care vote was doomed in those 30 seconds.

khannie ,
@khannie@lemmy.world avatar

For me, the lack of a definition of a durable relationship was the killer. How do you know if you’re in one?

I was mostly OK with this. The constitution is broad strokes and legislation is to define the minutia with the courts as the final arbiters.

I did feel like that one was open to potential abuse by both legislation and court cases but I have enough faith in our senior judiciary to not fuck up the interpretation and I felt the current wording was really out of date so it swung me towards a yes, just about.

It definitely could have been worded better and I think it will come in a future vote. The current wording is very 1936 like.

khannie ,
@khannie@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah the wording was awful. I’d go one further… The state was trying to wash it’s hands of caring for the elderly and got told to go and fuck itself with a large protest vote on the family question (which I actually thought would pass and I expect a rerun of it in the future with better wording).

Varadkar let the mask slip in advance of polling on the care one. All very well for him given he’s rich.

khannie , (edited )
@khannie@lemmy.world avatar

I voted yes on the family one and no on the care one.

While I thought the wording for the family one was very poorly thought out, I felt it was important to change the current wording to reflect what we all see around non traditional families and consider them a family.

The care one was an easy no for me. It stank of the state trying to wash it’s hands of the burden of care it currently has.

Edit: news here is saying there was a decent protest vote on the family one. The care one got slapped down hard. Last figure I saw was around 75% but that was early.

khannie ,
@khannie@lemmy.world avatar

That was a very long time ago unless I’ve missed something more recent? (Genuine question) Personally think it’s time to re-examine our neutrality

It feels wrong not to support Ukraine militarily.

khannie ,
@khannie@lemmy.world avatar

Hi-dilly-hi…hi-dilly-ho…over the side of the boat you go!

Nah we’re all friendly now for the most part. Sporting events excluded naturally where fervent, screaming nationalism from the Irish comes in and the English wonder why we are so angry at them. :D

khannie ,
@khannie@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, those days are gone thankfully. Also it would be a mistake of epic proportions to try and subjugate the Irish one last time tbh. Epic proportions.

khannie ,
@khannie@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah neutrality is worthless at that point. Sure Hitler wasn’t going to stop with the UK. We were definitely next.

The main advantage it has given us has been as a trusted UN peacekeeper where the Irish Defence Forces have been seen as a neutral third part to conflict and they have done and continue to do solid work abroad in that regard.

khannie ,
@khannie@lemmy.world avatar

Surely you’re not referring to the most successful European military in the last 2000 years?

since the year 387 BC, France has fought in 168 of them, won 109, lost 49 and drawn 10; this makes France the most successful military power in European history in terms of number of fought and won

khannie ,
@khannie@lemmy.world avatar

I mean every other nation in Europe did too at the time. Only geography saved Britain. Germany rolled over everything in it’s path in the early part of the war.

The French made one massive strategic error, fought hard after realising it and were instrumental in holding off the Germans while the British bailed back to the mainland to fight another day.

I’m tired of the implied reduction of combat capability of the modern French military that comes with a single strategic balls up 80 odd years ago.
