ADHD assessment done. Hi 👋 I’m officially AuDHD. What the flip.

No idea how I feel about this yet. May take a few days. Feel VERY sensitive about this right now so please be kind in the replies. Not sure whether to cry, be happy, relieved, or just overwhelmed… I’ll settle for a few silent expletives and going non-speaking for a while (days?).

(P.S. Self identifying is valid. I had just realised I may as well self identify regardless of the assessment outcome, but I’m someone who needed this second opinion by a qualified clinician. My self dx’s of autism and ADHD have both proved to be accurate.)

Is there a term in the autistic world for "outing" someone? In the gay world we have often very accurate "gaydar".

I was watching a mom and son on a television show. On one hand I want to talk about them and their interaction, but on the other hand I don't feel right about "diagnosing" them, particularly in a public way.

@darrellpf @actuallyautistic my understanding is that’s still called “outing” and i’ve seen “autdar” used a few times, also “clocked as autistic”

I hate working in openspaces with no option to go to a quiet place. Right now there are two phone calls and three conversations around me in a mix of four languages(I know all, and my brain choses randomly on which sounds to focus), and the task documentation I’m writing right now has to have very careful and precise wording, and I keep re-reading the same paragraph over and over again and don’t even get what I’m saying.

@olena @actuallyautistic How many in ear monitors have you tried? This is not a cheap option, but some models are compatible with custom silicone ear molds. You have to go to an audiologist to get the molds done. Shure and Etymotic are two of the companies I know of that support this. I've had both (personally have not gotten ear molds, but a friend has) and prefer Etymotic.

So, my office made attendance mandatory once a week, starting today. I've been here for 1,5 hrs and have already cried, bitten a hole into my stress relief chew toy, and stuffed my face with two bags of Haribo. I can't fucking do this, someone get me out of here please 😭 @actuallyautistic

@StrassenKatze @actuallyautistic Working from home every day should be a reasonable accommodation. In the before times I worked in an office like that and have had remote jobs ever since. I will never go back.

@actuallyautistic Unless you were diagnosed in the Asperger region of Austria, it’s just sparkling autism.

Just had my results session for my ASD assessment, and I've officially been diagnosed with ASD now. I guess that's exciting? The psychologist kept asking if I needed time to process it, and stuff like that, and not really? Am I supposed to? I had kind of come to terms with it over the past couple months, so it wasn't really news to me. I guess more than anything it's affirming to hear it from a professional?

Being @actuallyautistic and for me means I often get told the following, initially:

„No! You‘re wrong! What a shit take! You have no idea what you‘re talking about! Stop the drugs, man!“ and the like.

After some discussion, people say:

„I have not thought of it this way. I got you wrong. We should actually consider doing it your way. You seem to have deeper insight than the average person.“

This often makes me question my place in this world. Anyone else?

@haui @actuallyautistic I once proposed a solution to a hardware device I wasnt working on to dealing with losing battery power and figuring out what time is real before the device gets its time synced from the server. The manager said that sounds complicated. The sw eng told me later that’s what they went with. There was never any other acknowledgement from anyone else in the meeting.

I am now actively looking for a software engineering job. BSEE. Over the last 10 years I have primarily worked with modern php (7 and 8) using Drupal, but am also fluent in javascript, python, C, etc. I can do front end type stuff but am hapiest working out API requests (sending and receiving), dealing with complex data sets. I’ve done Single Sign On implementations using SAML in both directions,

have patched Drupal core, contrib modules, supported and helped maintain several open source projects. I have some automated testing experience: unit tests and integration, but the nature of agency work often lets this be lowest priority. I prefer to work on teams where engineers and project managers treat each other as equals and where neurodiverse people are supported rather than forced to fit into a neurotypical world. @actuallyautistic [2of2]

Autism and Sensory Issues:

Our microwave oven is a sensory nightmare for me. I always try to stop it before it reaches zero and begins beeping. I get extremely anxious over this.

What do you avoid?

@minxdragon @actuallyautistic @autism101 Two cautions, the included pan for air frying is teflon coated. Using it as a toaster makes very uneven toast. We ended up getting a basic toaster that sits next to this. Otherwise, this thing is great.
