I don’t care enough about this to do the research. So, does anybody know which slur, in particular, he has now been repeatedly using?

janNatan ,

Every morning headaches can be a sign of sleep apnea. Not saying you have it. Go to a doctor.

janNatan ,

I hear how terrible synthetic-ruber tires (read: all modern tires) are for the environment, and I’ve wondered why we can’t do this? If we made the cars lighter and used very good shocks? Or bikes even - they are all rubber too.

Hey, friend. I just wanted to let you know that I couldn’t get New Vegas to run on my (up to date) Linux PC until I installed the custom Proton version called “Proton GE.” The GE stands for Glorious Eggroll, which is the username of the developer. There’s guides on how to install it on the GitHub’s readme. I know it may sound complicated to someone new, but you can do it!

Here’s a link to the read me: github.com/GloriousEggroll/proton-ge-custom?tab=r…

Scroll down to the “native” install instructions.

Of course, you can ignore this if New Vegas just works for you as it seems to for many others. My system is MX Linux, not Mint.

janNatan ,

Thankfully, nvidia actually released open source drivers for their cards a couple years ago or so. Nvidia cards are much more compatible with Linux now than they used to be.

Proton is a Windows compatibility layer for games developed by Valve for Steam. It’s based on Wine. Wine originally stood for WINdows Emulator, but it now stands for “Wine Is Not (an) Emulator,” which I always found funny. Technically, it is translation layer for system calls, I think. It’s very good these days!

But really, the only thing to know about Proton is that for any game in Steam, you can go into the “compatibility” preferences and enable Proton for that game. This can allow Windows games that Valve doesn’t support to work in Linux. It’s not perfect, however. ProtonDB (database) is a website full of user reviews of how well Proton works with games. They will tell you what tweaks they used to get games working!

janNatan ,

The best way to dual boot is to have separate hard drives for Windows and Linux. I’m not aware of some distros bring more windows friendly than others.

janNatan ,

Oh, don’t worry. They’re ending support for old teams soon. You won’t have a choice anymore.

Not only are new teams notification banners annoying, new teams no longer makes a noise for every single notification, like it used to. I rather have a ding than a banner, especially since I tend to use all of my screen space.

janNatan OP ,

Actual box for display.

janNatan OP ,

Mostly just purely nostalgic reasons, computer software in boxes.

janNatan OP ,

Sackware Store seems to be down right now. Unfortunate.

janNatan OP ,

Thanks. I was hoping for an actual set in like a cardboard box.

janNatan OP ,

A play? No, I just saw an old Linux box and wondered if anybody still made them.

janNatan OP ,

Wie komisch! I actually know German, but they don’t deliver to the USA. Thank you, though.

janNatan OP ,

Thank you. I see the DVDs and the USB sticks, but how can you tell which ones actually come as a box set? It’s really the box I’m interested in.

janNatan OP ,

Can I make my own Linux install media? Yes. I do it all the time. Can I make my own software box with cool artwork and booklets and various other goodies? No.

janNatan OP ,

I could, but I have no aptitude for visual art. I’d sooner buy one of the vintage Linux boxes. And I may very well do that.

janNatan ,

If you ever sweat, like ever, smart watches may not be for you. I’ve had 3, different brands (all Android Wear OS), and my sweat eventually tarnished the charging contacts to the point of no use (even after being cleaned with alcohol and something abrasive) all three times.

So, if you sweat, you’re gonna wanna make sure the charging contacts don’t touch your skin. Ever.

How should I change my polite behavior to be more accommodating?

My parents raised me to always say “yes sir” and “no ma’am”, and I automatically say it to service workers and just about anyone with whom I’m not close that I interact with. I noticed recently that I had misgendered a cashier when saying something like “no thank you, ma’am” based on their appearing AFAB, but...

janNatan ,

Wait, what’s the gender neutralish German honorific?

janNatan ,

Oh! I was thinking maybe “geerhte” but that makes way more sense. Duh.

janNatan ,

I’d say so far, my best decision has been saying “ok” when an old coworker offered me an interview at a new job.

OP, do you mind if I ask what your native language is?

janNatan ,

I decided to fully convert to Linux on my living room PC because I was convinced these random display drops I was getting were being caused by Windows. (I was right.)

I had a drive that I wanted to leave alone, because it had my videos and music and such. I wanted to try a new (to me) distro, so I just started using high rated ones I found on distro watch. The first two I tried (I honestly forget which) would NOT leave my video drive alone during installation (even with advanced options). The third one was MX, and it successfully installed while leaving my video drive alone. I liked that. I am used to xfce, and I like some of the custom little tweaks that MX adds to it, like easily making custom folder themes. I like that it can install .deb files and pretty much everything I’ve tried to run so far has worked.

So, yeah, that’s why I like MX. I have since installed it on my laptop, my office PC, and my husband is dual booting it. It even runs his v-tube software, which blew us away. I know most of this isn’t unique to MX, but it just seems to work really well for us.

What I heard is “the cow farmers who said they weren’t milking sick cows are lying.” And “our workers are still touching these diseased cows to hook them up to the milking machines, which has already led to one human contracting the virus by rubbing his eyes.”

Also, unfortunately, raw milk is still sold. It’s a very small margin, but it happens.

janNatan ,

But the dairy farmers have said they’re not milking sick cows! What else could they possibly do?

janNatan ,

So, I’m also a layman. I have been following bird flu news articles since the massive wild bird deaths started.

For what it’s worth, it didn’t just start jumping to mammals recently. It’s been infecting aquatic mammals for a while. I believe European minks and goats were infected even before that. Luckily, the virus doesn’t currently seem to be infecting the lungs of cattle. Similarly, the one human who contracted it recently had no respiratory symptoms. It seems he touched a cow and then touched his eye, causing the spread.

Based on articles I’ve read, it won’t be a problem for humans until the virus infects the upper respiratory tracts of humans easily.

However, with cattle farmers seemingly taking no precautions other than not milking sick cows (and I’m not even sure I believe that, honestly), it may just be a matter of time before that happens. Every infected cow is a place for the virus to spread and mutate.

janNatan ,

Don’t forget, the process of touching the cows to hook them up to the machines is a disease vector. And they seem to be taking no precautions for that.

janNatan ,

I have this mantra that I say to myself. I think it’s from Tibetan monks, but I heard it on an NPR interview.

“May we be victorious over our fears.

May we be happy without hope.

May we be of benefit to all.”

The fear here is my fear of doing the thing. The lack of hope is what I feel because I will not just fucking do the thing. The benefit to all is what happens when I actually do the thing.

I know it sounds super depressing, but it helps me… sometimes.

janNatan ,

Even if it did work, why would you do it? You’d still be playing League of Legends.

How to kickstart old Samsung GT-S7580? (midwest.social)

I just found my first phone ever and decided to start it up. I found out the password and decided to factory reset it since I’m planning on selling it. However, ever since I resetted it, it has been stuck on the same “Installing applications” screen (see image). I tried the volume up+power button+home button tactic and...

janNatan ,

I remember these days. I used to sing “the first boot is the longest” to the tune of “the first cut is the deepest” when booting a phone after installing a new OS. Have you tried just letting it run for a while? Although, if it takes longer than 30 minutes, then it’s probably hopeless. Would suggest reinstalling factory ROM or trying a custom one in that case.

janNatan ,

Unconventional way to take acid, but I support him.

janNatan ,

Yes, I get the sound version but it’s more likely for me to just be walking in a dream, fall flat on my face, and wake up. But it’s more jarring than it should be.

Apparently it’s more common in people with sleep paralysis, which I have.

janNatan ,

I’m pretty sure it’s just a reference to when the kid types ))<>((

Btw, it’s not from the dark side of the Internet. This was a very popular video at the time.

janNatan ,

I’m pretty sure OP is saying job hunting has gotten worse because job board websites are throttled.

janNatan ,

He looks like a floating zombie. (I know he just threw a ball.)

janNatan ,

Libre office or open office, what do you guys think? I’ve used both from time to time.

janNatan ,

I thought it said “understandable,” and I was like, “yeah.”

janNatan ,

I liked the Darkchylde form. Still not my kinda game. I might play for a second if they add Phoenix just because.

janNatan OP ,

Yes! I had a cheap windows 95 or 98 PC and it barely ran them. But, I downloaded them over and over anyway.

janNatan OP ,

Hey! I found one of them. I didn’t have this one as a kid, but it’s the same kinda thing. No idea if it works in modern windows but it works in my Windows XP virtual machine.

[SOLVED] Games not running

I have a problem with Borderlands 2 and Portal. If I run native version game crashes soon after launching. If I run Windows version with Proton game doeasn’t launch at all. I tried solutions from ProtonDB but none of them worked. I’m new to Linux gaming so I’m not sure what to do....

janNatan ,

This is good advise. My husband just installed Linux as a dual boot on his system over the weekend. He was having trouble with games that worked fine on my system until we re-downloaded them onto the Linux drive. Then they worked fine.

Please inform her that she is a kitty for me.

janNatan ,

Be that as it may, she must understand the fundamentals first

janNatan ,

“You guys are getting prostate exams?”

janNatan ,

Nobody asked, but if anybody is curious: “dick” is the German word for “thick.”

You may now resume your laughter.

janNatan ,

Maybe. But in modern German, the ‘th’ sound makes a hard T, not a hard… Oh, nevermind.
