There's a balance between the benefit of the warmth of a fan heater and the noise which it makes for autistic people like me. The noise is detrimental and the warmth is promotional but there comes a point at which the warmth isn't necessary compared to the need for silence.

@ideogram @actuallyautistic I have a fan (not heater fan, just a fan, I feel too hot a lot these days) on me most of the time & I like the droning, like white noise, but will fiddle with as necessary to make sure there’s no vibration sound. 🤷🏻‍♀️ The fan sound is good; any vibrations from it cause a high speed ticking I cannot abide.

One @actuallyautistic trait I haven't seen mentioned is what I'll call "efficienct routines".

I'm slow to learn a task, but once I know it I get faster and find more efficient ways to complete it. Doing the task without error and as quickly as possible is important. I can't stop halfway through or leave the task partially completed.

When I vacuum I do it exactly the same way every time. I know where to position it so I only plug in once. I despise being interrupted.

Is this common?

@SallyStrange @darrellpf @actuallyautistic Because it requires that they sustain attention for longer than they are accustomed to. They could train themselves.

IMO, we should add practice in sustained attention to school curriculums. I’m hearing that kids who grew up with smartphones/tablets are entering college with low reading ability, having been trained out of directing their own attention by devices telling them what to pay attention to & rewarding compliance.

Just was ‘diagnosed’ with anxiety today after talking to a psychiatrist for five minutes (I’m using quotes because it seems a bit too preliminary to me to diagnose whoever with whatever after about 5 minutes of general talk).
Came asking for and evaluation. Was totally ignored on that regard) Of course, didn’t have courage to ask again.

Was it so obvious? Was I just a walking stereotype: middle-aged woman from a war-thorn country living alone who voluntarily came to a psychiatrist(doesn’t matter what else she has, she can’t NOT be anxious)?
Or is it just a general experience of most of female-passing folks: to be seen as anxious, to have most of their symptoms attributed to (not like I was asked about any symptoms, but maybe have demonstrated some?)?

@olena @actuallyautistic These (ahem) professionals are there to prescribe either antidepressants or anti-anxiety meds, because that’s what makes the pharmaceutical companies the most money with the lowest probability of liability payouts. So it took 5 minutes for them to decide to put you on the anxiety track. “Diagnosis” is just what they have to call it to keep the paperwork legal.

Our corruption crisis is not limited to politics.

@olena @actuallyautistic Am I bitter that I can’t get anyone to even assess me for ADHD as a 50-something adult who has struggled with what she always believed was anxiety? Maybe.
