Yesterday my ublock failed me and I had to watch a full 5 seconds of ads for 3 times! Fortunately it seems to work after updating filters now

frippa ,
@frippa@lemmy.ml avatar

Yeah, Idk why but ublock auto-nuked the filters I entered (that nice custom filter from Tumblr), i didn’t notice but I did after the satanic torture by yt (15 secs of ads I won’t get back) I fortunately went on the dashboard and noticed my filters weren’t there, immediately re-pasted them.

I can’t see lemmygrad uniting with lemmy.world, not in a million decades. Not in traditional political stuff at least, they both support FOSS at least. (except one of them censors piracy instances but oh well)

If you include servers and embedded devices Linux is gonna go brrrr

Totally boycotting micro$oft (except for leeching from github)

boycotting Israel as much as I can (a medication I depend on comes from there, unfortunately)

Fast food, it’s just bad and unhealty

eBay as a buyer, selling stuff there opened my eyes as how much that platform sucks.

AAA game studios, kinda. I just pirate them.

frippa ,
@frippa@lemmy.ml avatar

Where to start

High fees (13/15% if you’re a professional)

It sides ALWAYS with the buyer, even when the buyer admits to scam the seller (happened to me twice)

Bogus fees for stuff like people buying from outside the EU (I’m in the EU)

Bogus rules, I couldn’t sell and old police hat, even if it isn’t in use anymore by the police, Idk why, they straight up removed my listing.

Scummy algorithm, if you don’t pay their mafia boss sponsorship % (like 15% on top of the 15% fee and shipping) they don’t indicize you in the top ~3 pages

And many more

IDK but it was my fault, I was a noob and was trying to run Ubuntu server from live usb with one (1) month of Linux experience, at least I experimented Idk, that’s the point I guess.

I am in the Communist country referred to as Italy, there are only 2 companies who actually have 4g infrastructures AFAIK, and the dozens of other carriers just rent the infrastructure from the tim/Wind3 duopoly

Status symbol VS smartphone, a phone isn’t smart if you can’t sideload apps or flash a custom rom.

Lucky you, in Rome, 25/mo for barely 200 down / 20 up, mixed fiber/copper. I’m still on DSL 100down10up (yeah, in 2023) but I think I’ll switch when they will provide real fiber, something like yours in terms of performance. (Fastweb btw)

@frippa@lemmy.ml avatar

Not panCat but I’ve been using Mint (cinnamon) for a couple of months now, it’s snap-less Ubuntu (snaps are a controversial packaging format, plenty of videos on that) with a Windows 10-esque UI and lots of actually useful apps pre-installed OOTB, 9/10 can recommend (not 10 bcs it looks a bit…old,but I guess you can customize it or put KDE if u want)

frippa ,
@frippa@lemmy.ml avatar

Just watching all these new subscription services for everything gave me the fatigue and started my self-hosting and actually-owning-things journey, even just paying for Netflix (when I still did) was too much for me, it didn’t have everything I wanted, if it did it would remove it after a year or so, and every couple years the price would hike.

frippa ,
@frippa@lemmy.ml avatar

So if I try to run the game on hardware that doesn’t meet the requirements and I get it to run (like a pentium IV) I should be banned?

frippa ,
@frippa@lemmy.ml avatar

The package manag- oh it’s windows right

frippa ,
@frippa@lemmy.ml avatar

IK I was just poking fun at windows, but the average user (a grandma or other non-tech literate person) won’t know it even exists, plus it doesn’t resolve the issue that, aside from a few maybe legal scripts, you can’t uninstall edge. Still a step in the good direction though.

frippa ,
@frippa@lemmy.ml avatar

Seconding that, made the switch and nothing broke since(almost 2 months now, ^o^) . Can’t say that for windows tho, where not only auto updates meant I had to wait half an hour to use my PC half of the time or disable them and not be up to date with security, but the OS itself was riddled with problems, sometimes just opening Firefox with a few tabs (like 4 or so) would bsod (and I have 16 gigs of ddr4 ram, so it wasn’t a ram problem) not to mention now that I’m on Mint everything is faster, I didn’t have to pay a license key and I know my OS isn’t trying to fight me for my data.

If anybody is interested: an old workstation/server costs about 100€, a 2TB external Hdd 50€, that’s about all you need to self-host your Netflix.

to proceed flash a Linux distro of your choice (I recommend Debian 12 stable) follow a tutorial on YT on how to install it, it’s very simple.

Download and configure jellyfin. Open the 8096/8099 port on your router.

If you live in a country where downloading “Linux ISOs” is frowned upon, be sure to use a VPN while downloading the latest Linux Mint release for your jellyfin server.

Load those fancy new kali Linux live CDs on your jellyfin servers, download clients for all your devices and enjoy!

Guides for everything I said can be found online, expecially on YouTube.

Just to add: jellyfin is free and open source: you know it does not spy on you and it does not build a profile on you to then sell your data to ad companies, a huge plus if you ask me.

frippa ,
@frippa@lemmy.ml avatar

Really want to get into real debrid, can you ELI5 it to me?

frippa ,
@frippa@lemmy.ml avatar

Nope, you can host it on windows if you want (although I recommend the stability of a Linux system) as for supported clients, windows, Linux, MacOS, Android, iOS, Android auto, Android TV, Apple TV, and much more.

frippa ,
@frippa@lemmy.ml avatar

I don’t know if it’s a r/whoooosh, but “Linux ISOs” is a way to refer to pirated content. You download movies, music, shows etc and then put it on your jellyfin server. It comes from the fact that downloading Linux ISOs is pretty much the only legal use case for a bit torrent client

frippa ,
@frippa@lemmy.ml avatar

I don’t really have experience with plex (I only used jellyfin) but AFAIK plex has ads, collects data and has paid plans, although their UI should be nicer, something you could circumvent with custom CSS (freely aviable on jellyfin’s site) there are many plex vs jellyfin comparisons online, but as far as I understood jellyfin is just FOSS self hosted plex with a slightly worse UI and maybe less device compatibility (still a lot of it, considering it’s a FOSS small project not backed by companies)

frippa ,
@frippa@lemmy.ml avatar

Does it give u an error like “media not supported by client” or something like that? If so - I’m not an expert- but you may need to enable video transcoding of smthing like that

Where I live (ymmv) shipping is 50cent if you ship a looooot of stuff, vat is like 18 cents, that means they need to turn a profit on 32 cents, dividing 32 by 10 we obtain 3.2 cents a sticker, wow. (just bought them btw)

frippa ,
