Chappelle’s humor is pretty plain and safe for his current audience.

fosforus ,

Chappelle hasn’t been that funny for me for a while, but I’m guessing he has found a pretty sizable niche in the trans thing. The more you clutch your pearls about it, the more he’s going to joke about it, that’s for certain. If people would stop being such religious fundies about all this, he wouldn’t have an audience for these jokes.

Trans people aren’t the fuel of these jokes, the dumbass fundies (such as the author of this article) are.

fosforus ,

You’re shocked that he did a thing that was incredibly successful and then doubles down on that success? Your being shocked feeds into that success.

fosforus , (edited )

Every Edgy Millionaire Comedian – roughly the same joke but the Columbus thing makes the edge of my mouth slightly curve upward every time

fosforus , (edited )

Have you heard the jokes? He absolutely hates us. He loves punching us. He brags about it.

Not the current ones yet, admittedly. Ironically enough, this article informed me that it even exists. I did watch the earlier one, and found it rather mild.

You can be a chapelle fan or you can be a trans ally.

I’ll take C) neither, but will both watch this show and support equal human rights for everyone.

fosforus ,

Yeah, I hate also that those things are equated. I mean perhaps the actual elite are more often rich than others, but there definitely exist plenty of non-elite rich people.

Russia has murdered almost 20 000 civilians, perhaps around 500 000 soldiers in total (both sides) in its mindless war in Ukraine. Not all of them innocent certainly, but I’d guess at least 90%. And they’re not even trying to protect themselves from anything.

And if you’ve been paying attention, this has been going for almost 2 years now. And still goes on. One best case scenario that Estonia recently presented in a report was that Russia will lose the war in 2 years. So if the rate keeps until then, we’re looking at about a million deaths in total. Granted, Ukraine and Russia’s population is a lot higher than the Gaza strip.

fosforus ,

Perhaps it’s not quite as many as western media claims, but it’s definitely more than 0. I mean, governments kill more than 0 people even if they actively try not to.

fosforus ,

Well ok. If we’ll look instead of an example where the government is actively trying to kill people, www.shahit.biz/eng/ lists about 77k victims in the Uyghur Genocide.

fosforus ,

Yeah, fair enough. I’ll keep my comment up as a permanent record of my stupidity.

fosforus ,

Nice!

E: doubly nice because Maine actually wasn’t a 100% D state in the last 2 elections. They went 1/4 to Trump in both 2016 and 2020.

fosforus ,

In every past conflict in history Russia traditionally does terrible in the first few years of a conflict and absorbs staggering losses but is able to figure out what works and ultimately wins.

Then again, in almost every past conflict in history Russia has had Ukrainians fighting for them.

Outer Wilds is a game I won’t ever forget.

Me too, but because I mehhed it so hard that I was unable to finish it. Nice vibes though and fascinating premise, but the gameplay sucked for me and the story wasn’t compelling enough to counter that.

And I barely failed to get a refund in time :-|

This is called a risk investment. The risk is that nobody rents the place, in which case the landlord would lose the property.

As a renter, you have the freedom to call out that bet, but it’s quite probable that somebody else will rent instead of you. Also, if the markets are efficient, it’s almost 100% that you’re not getting a better deal anywhere else for your place of residence.

Lemmy.world Should Defederate with Threads

I think it’s pretty safe to say that the majority of us are here to avoid another corporate takeover of our preferred platforms. It would seem to me to be a tad irresponsible to allow Facebook into our space with open arms, allowing them to hoover up our data. I would love to keep using Lemmy.world, but will happily change...

fosforus ,

Jesse, what the fuck are you talking about?

fosforus ,

What’s a good way to figure out whether my instance is blocking them?

fosforus ,

If they don’t scrape Reddit, it’s because scraping Reddit costs money. Because they closed down their free-of-charge APIs, remember? Which they did because people were scraping their data for free.

Scraping Lemmy is free, and most probably will always remain that way.

fosforus ,

I generally support Israel’s fight against Hamas, but yeah, that’s pretty fucking dumb.

fosforus ,

Well, perhaps not for long. In recent polls, when asked who should be the next prime minister of Israel, 2/3 of israelis said “anyone but Netanjahu”. Could be though that they’d be fine with another hawk.

fosforus ,

I had huge reservations towards Tesla’s control system, but in reality, I got used to it in a week. And I’m loving how clean and sleek the dashboard is otherwise. What I don’t understand is the car makers who include a huge tablet AND a dozen gadgets around the dashboard. That’s worst of both worlds.

fosforus ,

I thought he articulated pretty clearly what he wants to do. But perhaps it’s not his voters who are being anxious?

fosforus ,

Even if Trump aligned with my politics in every possible way, I would not vote for him. And he doesn’t. Also, I don’t have a vote in the US.

fosforus OP ,

I feel like the modders had a woosh moment here perhaps.

Except of course for the little fact that Ukraine wasn’t in NATO.

People outside of Finland might forget that before Russia attacked Ukraine, they had several military bases around Finland, with plenty of troops in them. www.is.fi/ulkomaat/art-2000000728599.html from 2014 (in Finnish, sorry). For the Ukraine war, they emptied these bases. What they’re doing now is just restoring those bases to what the had been for several decades.

Putin is just plain lying, as he is every time his mouth moves. They have maintained a highly threatening stance against Finland ever since WW2.

fosforus OP ,

I have fully supported every action of my government when it comes to Russia since 2020, though. But sure, if they started doing something wrong instead, I wouldn’t have much control over that.

fosforus ,

Business really has no ethics, and it needs no ethics: its main and only goal is to make money. Government’s job is to define the ethics, and create and enforce a framework in which businesses may operate.

The reason why businesses shouldn’t be responsible for acting ethically is that being unethical gives you an edge against your competition. So if we let companies have the main responsibility of how to behave, nice companies are penalized.

The framework needs to be as simple and unambiguous as possible, because the more complex it is, the more it penalizes small and starting companies.

fosforus ,

No, let’s not. Or at least let’s change it to something better this time, not worse.

fosforus ,

murdering people

I believe murdering people is illegal, sir.

fosforus ,

Amoral, more like.

fosforus ,

Yes, capitalist free-market countries almost exclusively. That’s the thing I’d rather not have others break.

fosforus ,

I know that you know that I know you know that’s what you said.

fosforus ,

Did you even look at a list? Denmark, Norway, Sweden… You think these are "capitalist free-market countries"and that’s why they top the list?

Yes, they obviously are capitalist free-market economies.

Perhaps you should read something like www.amazon.com/…/0465060730 before going on with this line of conversation? It should cover most of what you seem to be lacking.

fosforus ,

These new numbers make Hamas look like angels.

Perhaps you’re trying to be funny but

The data gives a clear picture of the scale of the atrocities at the Supernova music festival in Reim where 364 people were killed.

But perhaps you were referring to Azrael or Lucifer when you said “angel”?

fosforus ,

The side that is more liberal and modern is far less wrong. sopuli.xyz/comment/5435427

fosforus ,

No no no, not “pretends”. Is more liberal and modern.

I’m sorry for what must be a soulcrushing amount of cognitive dissonance if you think Israel is not liberal and modern compared to Palestine. It’s so blindingly obvious.

fosforus ,

As much as I support Ukraine’s fight against Russia, they frankly have a lot of getting-shit-sorted-out before they should be let in either EU or Nato. Admitting them in while in midst of a war would be a total spin of the roulette wheel as to what we get.

fosforus ,

Finland’s fine system at least tries: some fines scale based on the perp’s monthly income.

Example: theguardian.com/…/finnish-businessman-hit-with-12…

I’m unshamedly proud of this. Apparently Switzerland has the same system.

fosforus ,

Did you completely miss the part where they captured several dozen militants?

fosforus ,

desecrating a mosque

What does this even mean? The article says they recited some prayers in there. Who cares about this magic shit and why?

fosforus ,

Exactly. The double standards that Hamas’s defenders apply are incredible.
