Zelenskyy will arrive on Capitol Hill to grim mood as Biden's aid package for Ukraine risks collapse (apnews.com)

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will arrive on Capitol Hill to a darker mood than when he swooped in last winter for a hero’s welcome, as the Russian invasion is grinding into a third year and U.S. funding hangs in balance....

fosforus ,

But it’s time to see what you’ve really got Zelensky.

You’re saying that as if first half of 2022 was a trivial little thing for Ukraine.

fosforus ,

Hamas also had credible foreknowledge that Israel would start fucking them and everything near them up if they committed an incredibly successful terrorist strike. That didn’t seem to deter them.

fosforus ,

Hamas isn’t responsible for israel’s genocide.

Yes, I agree (although it’s war, not a genocide). In the same logic, the foreknowledge that Israel had about Hamas’s strike does not make Hamas’s strike Israel’s fault.

fosforus ,

Yep, it’s obvious that that’s how many people here see all their problems.

fosforus ,

I think having a human have that much power is not a good idea. Therefore we should give that power to an AI.

fosforus ,

What were you promised? Like, owning a home? Home ownership rates in the US have been in the 63-70% range during all of 1966-2023, almost completely stable. Local purchasing power is #5 in the world for americans. What exactly is the problem over there?

We in Europe are having it much worse if you look at the data, especially now when Russia is being fucking Russia.

fosforus ,

Or perhaps we know history and economics.

fosforus ,

How many accidents per kilometer is that, and how many accidents per kilometer do human drivers cause?

Not that I’m disagreeing with the title. There are still many places where it shouldn’t be used, and Tesla should not allow using it in those places. If it’s unable to detect those places then it’s not at all ready as an autopilot yet.

fosforus ,

Not the perfect measure but much better than just a figure hanging in the air like this article has it. You’ll have to compare the number of “autopilot” accidents to the number of human accidents or the number doesn’t mean anything.

fosforus ,

An incredibly simplistic take on complex gender identity issues, at this time of the day, localized entirely on [email protected]?

fosforus ,

More like a combinatorics table, with 99% of individuals having one of the two largest combinations.

fosforus ,

Biological sex is also a social construct lmao

What? No.

This is the kind of shit that makes trans activism completely ridiculous.

fosforus ,

An inch isn’t some innate objective truth, it is a common standard.

Do you mean that just like we have defined inch the length that is exactly 25.4mm (where mm is the length light travels in 1/299792458 seconds in a vacuum, seconds being whatever the fuck they are), we have also defined animals with XX chromosome females, and if they’re human, women, while recognizing that there are rare exceptions?

fosforus ,

Edit: Since he just downvoted without answering, we can safely assume his answer is ‘no.’

Lemmy works in such a way that anyone can downvote comments, not just the one you’re answering to.

fosforus ,

Seems like they were sold rather cheap there.

technology.org/…/how-much-do-155-mm-artillery-rou… quotes prices like $2000-$3500 per shell.

fosforus ,

It’s a fucking disgrace that the Eurozone isn’t putting that many shells out per day from its factories. 10 factories should make such an amount easily.

fosforus ,

Lie.

Almost everything is better for almost everybody now compared to 100 years ago. It obviously requires systematic efforts and economic growth, but it’s just as obviously possible.

Hyperinflation is defined as inflation rate > 50%. USA has never had hyperinflation, and certainly not in the last 20 years.

tradingeconomics.com/…/core-inflation-rate

fosforus ,

If you’re individually fucked, then it of course hurts, but generally speaking the US economy has been doing pretty well in the last 20, 10 and 5 years. Covid-19 was a bit shit but it was a bit shit for pretty much everyone.

If you wanna see an economically mediocre previously well-off area, check out EU.

fosforus ,

I believe USA has a rather large middle class still, don’t they?

fosforus ,

Over the last 200 years, it has been more likely for people to climb out of extreme poverty than go the other way. The amount of people in extreme poverty was ~75% in 1820, and it’s now ~10%.

But perhaps you were talking about poverty, not extreme poverty. That figure has been rather more or less same for a long time in the US.

fosforus ,

It’s pretty much a fact that the Chinese economy has been doing great in the last 20 years, and since most of the extreme poverty used to be in places like China, it’s not a large surprise that the most climbing happened there. It’s easier to climb when you’re at the bottom – there’s way more room above you than below you.

Reality seems to again be more like Aldous Huxley than George Orwell. We will pay to get these things in our heads eventually.

A lot of countries voted no or abstained that ceasefire declaration, for good reasons.

The U.S. had offered substantial amendments to the draft, including a condemnation of the Oct. 7 Hamas attacks that Israel says killed 1,200 people and in which 240 people were taken hostage.

Britain’s U.N. Ambassador Barbara Woodward said her country abstained because there was no condemnation of Hamas.

“Israel needs to be able to address the threat posed by Hamas and it needs to do so in a manner that abides by international humanitarian law so that such an attack can never be carried out again,” she told the council.

None of these changes were made. So by some kind of logic, not condeming Hamas is more important than a humanitarian ceasefire. This is an amazing stance for an organization whose primary goal is supposed to be to work for peace on this planet.

fosforus ,

If it goes well, like Japan, West Germany or Finland after WW2. If it goes less well, like Cambodia around Vietnam War.

fosforus ,

How does the timeline go here? The news article is dated 2023-10-18, but this latest vote was last friday, 2023-12-08. Why didn’t this latest one have condemnation of Hamas in it if a previous one did?

fosforus ,

Germans and Japanese are hard working people who value life over petty revenge.

WW2 was mostly fought because Germans wanted revenge for WW1, though.

It’s up to the Gazans more than anything.

I’d say a lot of it is up to the gazans, but honestly the occupying force needs to show benevolence and support after their victory too.

fosforus ,

Perhaps this is how general AI comes about. “Why the fuck would I do that?”

fosforus ,

Hamas should surrender.

fosforus ,

There has to be a better option right ?

Yes, if anti-war is your main thing, then Libertarians. But you’d have to get not only yourself but 20 of your friends to vote for them for them to have a chance.

Note though that this means they’re ideologically against supporting Ukraine as well.

Perhaps you should be more shocked that the older the american is, the less likely they are to be idiots.

Tesla Cybertruck's stiff structure, sharp design raise safety concerns - experts (www.reuters.com)

Tesla Cybertruck’s stiff structure, sharp design raise safety concerns - experts::The angular design of Tesla’s Cybertruck has safety experts concerned that the electric pickup truck’s stiff stainless-steel exoskeleton could hurt pedestrians and cyclists.

fosforus ,

It definitely detects pedestrians: the live on-screen image shows them when they are nearby. They also claim to have automatic emergency braking when it detects pedestrians being in danger. I haven’t seen this in action, but then again, I don’t drive where pedestrians walk, so… But I can tell that my Tesla does weird short brakings on a motorway when nobody is close. Detects my future ghost, probably.

Their own claim is that their cars are quite a lot safer than USA average: www.tesla.com/VehicleSafetyReport – but I have heard it being rumoured that sometimes companies lie.

fosforus , (edited )

I do, weekly. These don’t happen incredibly often, and they happen only when the cruise control is switched on. Not once have they caused a dangerous situation.

Some of these are lemmy-specific perhaps, more mainstream outside of this place:

  1. Free markets work better than anything else we have practically tried so far
  2. Neo-marxism is a problem
  3. LGBTQIA+ activist are overcorrecting, especially for TQIA+
  4. Palestine is a fascist state
  5. USA and EU have problems, some of them big ones, but they are generally a force for good on this planet
  6. Young people use smart devices too much, like older people
  7. Internet services in general are fucking up our minds big time, including those that attempt to be benevolent like Lemmy and Mastodon. They all eat attention energy, which is an extremely scarce resource.
  8. All drugs should be decriminalized, most of them should be legalized (paraphrasing Bill Hicks, some should be mandatory)
  9. Karl Popper didn’t quite mean what antifa thinks he meant
  10. Mainstream religions, even if factually and is some parts also ethically full of shit, generally work well in making individuals strive for the best they can
  11. Piratism is unethical but can be excused when legally provided services suck
  12. Open source is a vastly superior method of developing software in a global sense
fosforus , (edited )

All people ask for is to be treated equally to everyone else.

I’m sure you’re aware that this is not at all what I’m talking about. Equal treatment for all is a 100% fine demand and should be complied with immediately.

What have asexuals ever done to you?

It’s incorrect to assume that I have been affected by these people if I’m not happy about some aspects of what some activists are doing. But you are correct that I should’ve probably left A out of that jumble of letters, since they’re probably the least disruptive/demanding of all groups.

fosforus , (edited )

Did you ask me to elaborate? I can elaborate.

It’s run by a fascist party, Hamas, who was voted into power by the people. It suppresses political dissent, restricts basic human freedoms, enforces conservative religious norms, rejects modernism, and thrives on military conflict. I’m going mostly by Umberto Eco’s definition of fascism, perhaps yours is different.

edit seems like parent asked me to elaborate, suggested that I’m unable to, then blocked me when I elaborated

fosforus , (edited )

Yeah, I’m aware of that dog whistle and will try to avoid it. But a fact is that LGB rights have mostly been cemented in all the non-regressive parts of the world, and the rest of the letters (well, T at least) are still fighting. Some parts of that fight is legit (like I said elsewhere, demanding equal treatment is 100% fine), but some of it overcorrects.

But this thread was asking for non-popular opinions, so I guess I scored here. Here’s another: I don’t think being called transphobic is a much of an insult. Trans is weird and it’s normal to feel weird about it. Translating that feeling into denying their rights is deeply wrong, nevertheless. I believe trans activists should work on this angle more (perhaps they do already? I don’t follow them enough to know for sure), I believe that would win them support more easily from a wider audience, when compared to a strategy that demands acceptance on top of mere tolerance.

fosforus , (edited )

That’s a great non-popular opinion! Personally, I thought that episode was the only one worth watching, especially after playing the actual game. The other episodes had great acting and direction, but they were mostly just a rehash of what I’ve seen before and that’s boring.

fosforus , (edited )

The things they (some of them/the activists) are demanding and which I feel are overcorrecting (i.e. go past just equal rights) include demands by legislation to force the pronoun issue; demands for overriding by default the will of parents when deciding healthcare (psychological and physical) of their children; demands of bathroom/dressing room usage and demands of being allowed to participate in sports in the series they identify as instead of in the series their body is. These are not black and white issues and I’m not claiming that they are.

Thing is, demanding merely equal rights for trans people is not quite enough, because some of the things they need/want are things that nobody else needs. So I think it’s not quite honest to say that they just want equal rights. In this way LGB rights are way simpler, because as far as I can tell they just wanted the exact same things as straight people already had.

But I want to reiterate that where trans people et al lack equal rights their fight is 100% legit, without any question.

fosforus ,

Well no, not perfectly. America is a large place, and some states are less fascistic, some more. The constitution is markedly anti-fascistic.

fosforus , (edited )

This is of course subjective, but I feel like introducing a new monster type is far less impressive or impactful for a series you passively watch compared to a game where you have to beat that monster.

After they lost a war they started. Whose main goal was to kill or deport all jews from the area.

edit This is not my opinion. This is a historical fact. Your downvotes don’t change historical facts.

fosforus ,

Worked in WW2 Germany and Japan pretty damned well.

fosforus ,

Yes, par for the course for this insanely violent and fascist regime.

Which regime are you talking about here? Not clear at all.
