Glorious Eggroll I’m pretty sure actually works for Red Hat.

eric5949 ,

You can probably install a different desktop environment for pop, usually it’s just a command and then there’s a menu in the corner of your login page where you can change the desktop environment.

eric5949 ,

It’s usually wildly off in my experience.

eric5949 , (edited )

Because it says 199 right now and I have one comment alone with 150+ and a post with ~135, plus 150 or so more comments most of which are between 5 and 30 and I don’t think any of which are negative. Like 3 days ago it said 500 something. I don’t know the best way to get a correct number, I personally don’t care tbh.

Edit: and please don’t take that as me being dismissive or an asshole, I hope you find a way to properly figure it out. I think I’ve seen folks say it’s in the Lemmy instance database but idk I just have the database running, I wouldn’t know where to start on how to check.

eric5949 ,

Idk I know they don’t fit into the usual open source box of Linux but I’d consider Android and ChromeOS as Linux distros, a distro is just a collection of software distributed with the Linux kernel as far as I’m aware. If someone doesn’t consider them “Linux distros” it’s probably due to the proprietary nature of some of the software surrounding the kernel. No idea why kde thinks neon isnt a distro when it literally is.

Edit: in the case of chrome os it’s not even just built around the kernel, it’s based on a distro.

eric5949 ,

I don’t really know what I’m doing so I’m currently banging my head against a wall trying to get nextcloud to work alongside a wordpress site both in docker, and this Lemmy is on a linode. I know a lot more about self hosting than I did a month ago that’s for sure, I wonder how long until I start trying to use ssh in my dreams.

eric5949 ,

There’s a file, I can’t remember what it is but I have it written on a sticky note on my desk at home, where I edited the makeflag or something to use 10 threads instead of 2 (I have a r5 3600) so maybe you just aren’t using all your threads.

eric5949 ,

Do it yourself, this whole thing is open source. Also, this is Lemmy, not reddit. It doesn’t need to be reddit. If you want reddit content still you are free to use reddit alongside Lemmy.

eric5949 ,

There’s an old video on derbauer’s channel where he throws his motherboard used for ln2 overclocking into the dish washer and explains how it’s actually totally fine if you’re not stupid.

eric5949 ,

damn you cant even hide them like you can on mobile that sucks.

eric5949 ,

There was one of the buttons up in the corner like there is for videos where you can tell it not interested. Like 3 days ago I was very annoyed because they threw them up at the very top of my YouTube apps home page and idk how it is on a regular phone, but on the fold 3 the shorts section takes up like 3/4 of the screen. If you’re looking for one in the subscription page, I don’t actually use that page tbh but I just checked and yeah there’s not one there.

eric5949 ,

That’s literally what the web apps are.

eric5949 ,

I mean reddit exists, and that would be VERY expensive.

eric5949 ,

“ok show me your browser history. Let me see your text messages too while you’re at it.”

eric5949 ,

Could just do like I do and make it lemmy.whatever.tld and mastodon.whatever.tld

eric5949 ,

Congrats, that’s the dumbest thing I’ve seen all day.

eric5949 ,

I do actually use my gaming laptop on my lap sometimes lol, it gets very hot when I do.

eric5949 ,

Just Warframe, probably that until Armored Core 6.

eric5949 ,

I’m inclined to agree with you that the ram is causing the crashing. I was running mine on the free oracle vms with 1 core and 1gb ram and it would crash constantly. I switched to a 2gb linode and it’s been flawless since.

eric5949 ,

Because we’re not 9gag. Lemmy is supposed to be better not derivative.

eric5949 ,

I don’t count posting a link you saw on Reddit as “taking top content from reddit and posting it here” so much as taking top memes and text posts. I do think bots should not be the ones doing it though, users should post links they find interesting. If that link came from Reddit it’s functionally no differerent than if it came from the Yahoo news page or the outlet itself.

eric5949 ,

Honestly, the main reason I won’t go iphone is I don’t like how apple does mobile ui.

eric5949 ,

You don’t know the home situation, they literally just said their friend was scared.

eric5949 ,

Natural discovery needs to be worked on.

eric5949 ,

Right now the process for me finding a new community is find the community, go to the search page in my browser, type in the community, search for it, wait for it to show up, and sub to it, restart my app. That sucks.

Everyone here by now knows how to find a community. Getting to that community fucking sucks.

eric5949 ,

It’s not even that I won’t do the work, I will. It’s just a shitty experience is all.

eric5949 ,

My bad if I made you think I took it as something negative, I just meant my comment to reinforce what you’re saying. Because you’re right, we’ll do it, normies won’t.

One of Reddit’s biggest communities is suggesting users move to Discord (www.theverge.com)

One of Reddit’s biggest communities is suggesting users move to Discord r/malefashionadvice, the biggest Reddit community still inaccessible in protest of Reddit’s new API pricing, is encouraging its users to congregate on Discord and view guides on Substack.

eric5949 ,

Honestly if it doesn’t work right through the bios but does grub, good. Windows likes to try and take over your computer sometimes when you turn it on.

What was your first experience using Linux? How old were you? Stick around or did you go back to windows before eventually circling back to Linux?

I’ll go first, I took my mom’s college textbooks which came with discs for a couple distros and failed to install RHEL before managing to get Fedora Core 4 working. The first desktop environment I used was KDE and despite trying out a few others over the years I always come back to plasma. Due to being like 12, I wanted to...

eric5949 OP ,

“what was your first Linux experience” is quite different than “why did you switch.”

My first Linux experience was with fedora core 4 in 2005 or 6. I switched to Linux in 2019 or so because Microsoft turned windows into full on spyware and my games finally mostly all worked on Linux. Very different answers.

eric5949 OP ,

The first thing I tried wax knoppix but the disk my mom burned for me didn’t work, I didn’t wind up actually getting to use knoppix until high school and then I found DSL was better for my needs at the time.

eric5949 OP ,

I vaguley remember the reason I gave up red hat being that I couldn’t get a desktop lol.

eric5949 OP ,

11 releasing was the catalyst for me just straight up not using my Windows drive anymore, I installed it to my Thinkpad (it’s still there, next to arch) to check it out and holy shit was it bad. Before then I’d boot in to play games with anticheat that didn’t work on Linux. Nowadays if I can’t play it on Linux I just don’t. Want my money? At the very least support proton. Don’t? Ok I’ll keep my money.

eric5949 OP ,

Oh wow, I’d never heard of window maker. Were you a fan of nextstep then?

eric5949 OP ,

I want to try gentoo someday but there’s no way I’d want it on my main machine, you are for sure dedicated. I think I might try out debian sometime though, maybe on one of my servers since they’re all running Ubuntu right now.

eric5949 OP ,

I will admit I sometimes think I want to boot up windows and play some vr games, but I’m at the point now where I used to be with windows where I don’t really want to spend all that time rebooting lol.

eric5949 OP ,

Sounds like what I did when I got back into Linux after years lol. Didn’t want one of the easy ones because I wanted to actually learn how to use Linux so I spent all night installing arch. Maybe the next day it wasn’t, but it’s one of the best computing decisions I’ve ever made. Really forced me to get comfortable using a command line since dos was before my time.

eric5949 OP ,

If you get a nice dock the steam deck works pretty well as a desktop so you’ll have no problems there.

eric5949 OP ,

Oh wow, you don’t see too many people who’s first experience with a computer was with Linux. Was windows challenging to use at first?

eric5949 OP ,

It really did. Even 5 years ago it was much less easily usable.

eric5949 OP ,

oh man, warcraft 3 was my game when I was trying to install linux the first time, I didn’t know enough at that point to get it working lol. I tried though, my mom told me about wine and I tried that and blitzkreig.

eric5949 OP ,

oh wow you went fast lol. welcome to the community! love my steam deck, best purchase in years.

eric5949 OP ,

I’m starting to think all the older folks are the ones who left reddit lol. Between stuff like this and the old memes, I’m definitely on the younger side of people here lol.

eric5949 OP ,

Of course! I think there’s a way to boot it into desktop mode by default too but ive never used it, and if you do do that it puts a shortcut on the desktop back to gaming mode anyway.
