Israeli army executes an elderly Palestinian after using him in propaganda campaign about its ‘safe corridor’ in Gaza (euromedmonitor.org)

Geneva – The Israeli army’s execution of an elderly Palestinian after using him in a propaganda campaign promoting its “safe corridor” in Gaza was strongly condemned in a statement released by Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor today....

That walking stick looks fucking dangerous.

el_abuelo ,

TOR browser and a decent VPN.

Personally use Nord VPN but guessing from how infrequently it gets recommend by folks on lemmy I’m guessing it’s not the best.

el_abuelo ,

And the low cost of candles. Those were the days.

el_abuelo ,

Wild to me how many replies you’re getting that defend North Korea. A failed state that has a starving population with no freedoms and is completely ostracised from most of the world. By choice.

el_abuelo ,

I’m not going to engage with someone who resorts to ad hominem attacks.

el_abuelo ,

You live in ignorance and seek to maintain that ignorance in other people

Quite literally the definition of argumentum ad hominem. Attacking my character as well as my motivations, neither of which are the subject of the discussion and are only being used in a fallacious way in an attempt to cement their argument. Their follow-up just demonstrates why it’s not worth the time to engage with someone who makes such fallacious bad faith arguments.

The preceding paragraphs were attacking my argument and would have made an interesting argument otherwise.

el_abuelo ,

You okay?

Starting a new business is hard enough as it is - please do not complicated it by adding in something that brings limited tangible benefits to the company, whilst making it unnecessarily harder than what it will be anyway.

Either get fluent now, and then start your business - or start your business with Windows and move on when you’re profitable and can afford the reduction in productively while you learn the ropes.

Do not go anywhere near MacOS - you can’t afford it.

Can an average person who works a full time job become capable enough to rival a secret agent like James Bond or John Wick on their own ?

If so what kind of training they would have to go through ? By training I mean the spatial and situational awareness, combat skills (this is kinda unrealistic), enough knowledge to turn any situation to their advantage etc....

el_abuelo ,

You are referring to “The Office”

The US Version of “The Office” is the clone, so please do not denigrate the classic.

Note: I prefer the US version. This is not a comment on which one is preferred or better.

el_abuelo ,

I assumed he wouldn’t get in the first time. I really hope people don’t make that mistake in 2024. Voter turnout should be through the roof - because if there’s one thing the republicans hate more than the Democrats, it’s a high turnout.

el_abuelo ,

You say that like knowing one’s history is a bad thing. I imagine wherever you are from is equally as “obsessed” about its history.

For instance, aren’t Americans taught about their past presidents? And most of them had significantly less impact than most of Britain’s monarchs.

el_abuelo ,

Which countries are you culturally aware of enough to know that to be the case?

The US has mount Rushmore and the Licoln Memorial as an example of a counter point.

I think most countries have images of their old leaders in a similar way to how UK has it. But I’m curious to know where this is not true.

el_abuelo ,

Source? Sounds like nonsense to me.

el_abuelo ,

Why would you be using JS in this scenario?

el_abuelo ,

Something has gone horribly wrong if you’re trying to do such optimisations when you’ve already chosen JavaScript…let alone Electron.

el_abuelo ,

Thankfully the only interaction I have with teams is when a supplier arranges the call. Once every two weeks. It grosses me out every time…and that’s the Web app.

Do you really think they have done such optimisation efforts as minimising function calls? I can’t imagine it’s required for what is actually a fairly simple frontend app. The complexity is the enabling stack on the backend.

el_abuelo ,

This is a great shout. Since I stopped commuting 6yrs ago my reading is almost entirely non existent. Doing it between sets means I can give my brain a workout while the guns get one :D

el_abuelo ,

I’m too intimidated to try one despite staying in hotels round the world that usually have them. What if it goes wrong? How bad much shitty water do I and the bathroom end up covered in? How do you know if it’s clean? Doesn’t other peoples shitty water end up on the same appliance that you’re now using? Does that mean I end up with other peoples shitty water being jet streamed towards my anus? So many questions, so much doubt. Similarly for those handheld nosel things popular in the middle East and parts of Asia.

el_abuelo ,

Is that like a Swiss army knife…but instead of assorted cutting tools, you get assorted baggage?

el_abuelo ,

Incorrect. Racism is the prejudice or discrimination of a person or people due to their racial or ethnic group. Not just any group. So no - attributing something to Germans isn’t racist.

el_abuelo ,

While thus advice comes across as judgemental and obnoxious, it is infact accurate and good advice for everyone. Listen to your body, take your time to eat, eat reasonably well, drink water, go to bed at the same time every day and get 7-8hrs sleep. You’ll live longer.

el_abuelo ,

It is well known that as soon as you document a setup procedure, it is out of date and needs redocumenting.

You wanna know what’s even more lost nuanced? the fact that a customer paying your salary via tip is after they’ve paid taxes. So let’s say they tip $1 - in my country that means they had to earn $2 before tax (assuming the customer is a billy big bollocks higher-rate tax payer).

But what about if the employer pays the server instead? well now we’re talking…when the emplopyer pays the server, it does so PRE-TAX. That is to say they can pay the server $1 and in order to do so they only had to earn $1. While if they banked that $1 as profit, they would pay tax on the $1 first and so see less of it (let’s call it $0.80). Mind you, that does mean that the service worker now needs to pay $1 on that income…but surely they would declare their tips anyway and pay the tax either way? right? riiiiight?

Long and the short of it is - the cheapest way for the server to get $1 is for the employer to pay it to them and pass the cost on to the customer. The cost to the employer is what the company would have received post-tax for that $1 which as we said earlier was $0.80. The server got the $1, the employer is not gaining or losing anything, and the customer is only paying $0.80 which means they only had to earn $1.60 instead of $2. Everyone wins, except the tax man doesn’t win quite as much as he was winning before. Cry me a river.

el_abuelo ,

In the EU we like to pay a living wage and tip. That way we know that no one is getting fucked (any more than usual) and the good service staff are getting rewarded for going above and beyond.

el_abuelo ,

Curious what sync users find about it worth paying for above say Jerboa or whatever? Would appreciate comments.

I used sync on Reddit and was kinda sad to see the dev didn’t grandfather people into Sync for Lemmy - especially given the high price of sync and the reuse of work that I’d already paid for. Obviously the guy should get paid, but I think £18 is excessive, especially for existing users.

el_abuelo ,

Is that any different to tapping the image in jerboa? Seems to act the same to me, so maybe I’m missing a nuance

el_abuelo ,

Gotcha - thanks!

el_abuelo ,

Yeah a minority of folks don’t like any smell of negativity around their team, regardless of whether your point is valid or interesting

el_abuelo ,

Yeah I have no problem with it being a paid app - just disappointed that it’s so expensive and that existing users of sync didn’t get any kind of offer. No hate…I’m just expressing my feelings.

el_abuelo ,

Fair viewpoint.

el_abuelo ,

85% but yeah. You can also set them to slow charge. So my phone, when set to Night routine, will change these settings to 85% slow charge while I sleep. I’ve yet to need to top-up that charge but if I did, I just leave it plugged in while I get ready for the day (with night mode off)

el_abuelo ,

That’s just because you’re paying for the location and not the food. It’s why, by and large, tourist centres have shit food despite being twice the price. Go somewhere that is about the food and not the location and you get what you pay for. Flavour.

el_abuelo ,

Eating cognac? Sounds like it might have curdled.

el_abuelo ,

Look at the user figures for Lemmy instances and it becomes very clear that the number of people using Lemmy isn’t even in the hundreds if thousands. So yes I’d say it is possible to estimate that less than 100k people made the switch.

I never use reddit unless someone sends me a link for something specific (that someone could be google) - I don’t have their app installed and I never go to them naturally…I probably see 1 reddit post a week on average.

el_abuelo ,

Folks in this thread complaining about Electron I think miss the point. It is a trade-off. It is designed to allow engineers who have a web dev skillset to write desktop apps. For those like me who want to write the occasional hobby app - it’s great. It’s also great for orgs to be able to have cross functional teams. Just like React Native allows this for the mobile world. This could be because they’re small and can’t afford specialist native engineers for each platform they want to support - or it could be that they want to spend their money in other areas and happy to trade off app performance. If it was as lean or as performant as native apps there would be a lot of people in this thread looking for work.

el_abuelo ,

Chrome won’t give Web apps access to the file system amongst other things. I’m a firm proponent of web apps - but they can’t do everything a desktop app can, and so electron offers an alternative with the trade offs I mentioned.

el_abuelo ,

Native apps have the potential to be better than electron apps for sure. I get that.

This is a surface level thing though - the question is: would THIS app, written by THAT organisation be better if it was native? Unlikely because they don’t have the skillset for it…otherwise it would have been a native app. Its also likely that less apps would even exist because the barrier to entry is higher without electron and similar.

But this is just a meme and I’m taking this way too seriously!
