i want and try to be but i don’t succeed every day. i hate thinking about those times when i don’t succeed, but being mindful of those times is a big part of what i can do to succeed more often.

this is the correct response.

get it in writing that they accept the risk that comes with not upgrading so it can’t come back on you. all you can do is CYA and make recommendations - if management does not agree with your recommendations make sure you have it documented that you informed whoever is making the decision of the risk.

if you think your employer will somehow still try to hold you accountable for this, save the aforementioned correspondence using something your employer does not manage i.e. a personal device. you could also let other people than this specific individual know about this so it isn’t just your word vs his.

exactly! whenever anyone says imperial units are “more intuitive” and better reflect “how it feels to humans”, i can only think: obviously, you grew up with it. that’s what you know.

no matter what measurement system you were raised on, it will feel intuitive to you and reflect how you as a human experience the world because you are used to measuring things in those units. having said that, i’d much rather we used metric if for nothing else than the ease of unit conversion.

corporation yet again proving that if you want to be free to use your own things that you paid for on your own computer you can never trust anything that requires an internet connection to not trample all over your rights

love it very cool really vibing with the current state of software and the internet

i think it is incredible how different cooking techniques can completely change tofu and you can do basically anything with it.

i’ve been making it myself for a couple years and what i make now is worlds better than when i started. recently i had a japanese bbq tofu dish at a restaurant and i legitimately do not think i am capable of preparing tofu like that myself - so cool to know that there is always new ways to enjoy tofu.

your food looks delish btw

always happy to read about someone who wants to try vegan food :)

vegan butter is great - it tastes a little off from dairy butter if you’re eating it on its own (also depends on brand, some are way better than others) but it is indistinguishable (to me) in a complete dish or baked good.

all the vegan mayo i’ve had is a great substitute for cheap storebought mayo, but maybe i’ve just been getting shitty mayo lol. if you’re someone who is into the fancier mayos and/or have made your own at home and know how good that can be, i haven’t had any vegan stuff that measures up without additional flavorings. but like another commenter said, you can just mix and match flavors until you get something delicious.

it really is crazy how different it feels to use a linux pc after being conditioned to think that windows is just how using a computer is. the way i relate it to my friends is that using windows feels like i’m constantly compromising with the computer, but using linux i own my computer and it works for me - not the other way around.

businessfish ,
@businessfish@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

i wouldn’t trust a company who would enable this by default to allow users to TRULY completely disable it. much like how you can only opt out of the telemetry options they allow you to.

businessfish ,
@businessfish@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

There’s not enough of us, but I still don’t care. I refuse to pay to watch ads.

i had this conversation with my dad recently about how shitty everything is now with ads etc, and his response boiled down to “i don’t care enough”. sucks to see people being complacent in being subject to greedy corporate whims. as much as i want people with that mindset to care, i have no idea how to effectively argue against “i don’t care”.

businessfish ,
@businessfish@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

i’m of the same mindset when it comes to pirating any executable - it really is just not worth the effort to me to go through the steps to ensure the file isn’t malicious, and a signature-based virus scan won’t catch everything.

businessfish ,
@businessfish@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

right - obviously when piracy is the only option then you get what you get and you need to do the legwork to make sure it’s safe.

i do take proper security precautions (at least i hope i do, i have a degree in it lol)

i more meant that i’d rather not deal with an executable i don’t trust at all since i’m lazy and generally trust the official sources more than the illegitimate ones.

idk sometimes it’s just fun to eat something really hot, especially with friends

my dad and i did the 1 chip thing a few years back and we got a fun time and a funnier video out of it. not much more to it really

[Serious] Why do so many people seem to hate veganism?

Seen a lot of posts on Lemmy with vegan-adjacent sentiments but the comments are typically very critical of vegan ideas, even when they don’t come from vegans themselves. Why is this topic in particular so polarising on the internet? Especially since unlike politics for example, it seems like people don’t really get upset by...

businessfish ,
@businessfish@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

that’s great, but most vegans you speak to will tell you that we aren’t telling the people who lack the privilege we have to go vegan. we’re asking our neighbors, our bosses, our friends - people in similar if not the very same life circumstances as us - to walk a couple aisles over from where they buy the meat in the grocery store and buy some beans instead.

people love to bring up the privilege thing, but i would argue that it is entirely irrelevant. the entire point of veganism is to do what is reasonably possible and practicable. not to tell people who don’t have the privilege to be so discerning about their diet that they are going to hell or something.

businessfish ,
@businessfish@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

you aren’t the only one, shit is scary lately. but i’ve personally taken that as initiative to go do/buy the things i want (that i can afford) now instead of later in my life when i have more money/time, because realistically i don’t know that i will have more money/time when i’m older if things keep up as they are right now.

it hurts to think about.

businessfish ,
@businessfish@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

i say something like this often in real life, but despite it being plainly observable in daily life other people still don’t agree.

it’s on all scales too, or at least it feels like it. moving everything to streaming, always online, etc. want to play a competitive video game with your friends? give a corporation root-level access to your home computer. ads everywhere some greedy ass in a suit can think to stick them whether you pay or not, yet everyone complies like this is normal and i get singled out for caring about our rights as consumers.

i love capitalism i love money

NICE

you’re making me wonder what a whole technomage theme could/would look like

businessfish ,
@businessfish@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

trackmania has that in common with basically all speedrunning streams/content. super nice to have in the background since it can be repetitive and you can pay attention if they get a good run going :)

and there are people who speedrun probably every game you’ve ever enjoyed, so there is plenty of options!

businessfish ,
@businessfish@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

right up my alley, thank you!

businessfish ,
@businessfish@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

and thats the power of linux baby hell yeah

businessfish ,
@businessfish@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

can you give an example?

i’m genuinely curious because outside of spiritualism type nonsense the information i’ve found in online and in-person american vegan communities has been pretty solid, and i’d like to know if i’ve been lied to.

businessfish ,
@businessfish@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

factorio is one of the best automation games ever, and also has just about any quality of life feature you could think to add to a game.

i’m in my first ever modded playthrough with space exploration and i’m blown away by the increase in complexity. the vanilla game is great but the mods are definitely worth trying if you want an exponential jump in complexity.

businessfish ,
@businessfish@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

yeah all the data is out there for why its better for you, the planet, and the animals that live on it, and i find it strange to not find veganism “modest” enough. going vegan was the easiest major lifestyle change i’ve ever made, and beans are cheaper than meat.

the only time i have problems being vegan is when someone else makes it a problem, and for some reason people really like to respond to any mention of veganism with hostility. but also those same people love animals and hate animal abuse.

businessfish ,
@businessfish@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

the part i struggled with most is realizing that everyone i know just doesn’t care about animals enough to stop eating their favorite sandwiches, the rest is pretty straightforward. keep on fightin the good fight

@businessfish@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

can i just say that i love seeing the ubuntu font in memes and gifs and shit all over the place now

really wish i wasn’t using discord, but i keep in contact with a good number of people on there and less than half of them would even consider switching services/software.

businessfish , (edited )
@businessfish@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

they really love doing that. around when i went vegan someone i know was asking me about it and then stopped talking to me entirely because i “bring up veganism too much” after like 2 conversations that i did not initiate.

meanwhile you literally cannot escape meat eaters either talking about how much they love meat or condemning imaginary people who are trying to make them eat bugs or something and conflating that with veganism, yet vegans are annoying.

businessfish OP ,
@businessfish@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

i don’t see why they wouldn’t be allowed provided you could demonstrate the game runs the same as windows, but also i’m not exactly at the level where i need to worry about the leaderboard cred lol.

businessfish OP ,
@businessfish@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

i think many pc games would be relatively lenient with this as long as you can reasonably demonstrate there are no beneficial differences with proton, especially lower on the leaderboard.

honestly i hadn’t given leaderboard verification much thought, but yeah currently i just speedrun for fun and just keep the times/videos for myself.

businessfish ,
@businessfish@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

i don’t think many people would consider posts that are literally paid advertisements part of “our space”

businessfish ,
@businessfish@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

yeah i’ve basically never had an issue that wasn’t my fault for tinkering with something that is either unstable or that i didn’t understand well enough.

i will say that rolling releases like arch can introduce system-breaking issues (it happened to me like twice in the 3 years i’ve been running arch, but man it sucks when it happens) so users who aren’t so into tweaking and messing with their systems should probably opt for something more stable.

businessfish ,
@businessfish@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

just beat a difficult game about climbing and i loved it! it’s the only other game in the genre that has risen to the heights of getting over it in terms of gameplay mechanics and level design.

if anyone reading this knows about a community for these types of games (foddian? getting over it-likes?), please send it my way. i love these games to bits and have so much to say about them but to my knowledge basically no one cares about these games outside of watching people on twitch get angry at them.

looking forward to playing return of the obra dinn, then i’ll probably start speedrunning the climbing game until baby steps releases lol

businessfish , (edited )
@businessfish@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

i upgraded last night! and when i booted up this morning, i was unable to log into any accounts in the login screen lol. if anyone else has a similar issue where the only option login screen gives you is wayland and that doesnt work for you or you want to use x11, what fixed it for me was installing plasma-meta as for whatever reason that wasn’t on my system at the time. this allowed me to select x11 again from the login screen and my system is working as normal.

i know we’re still in early days of plasma 6, but does anyone know any good calendar/weather/time widgets that i can replace this one with? store.kde.org/p/998901/ haven’t found another good calendar widget yet.

well skyrim was good in 2012, kinda hard to say it can stand toe to toe with modern titles (without mods obviously)

businessfish ,
@businessfish@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

well, different strokes for different folks. could just be i like different kinds of games now - it has been a long time and my tastes have definitely changed. most of the appeal of skyrim for me is just that i love games you can mod the shit out of lol

businessfish ,
@businessfish@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

me too! i stuck with mine quite a bit longer, but it ended up in the box all the same. there are very few good vr games that don’t have that tech demo-y format lots of early titles had. and valve’s promises of linux support were quite exaggerated, which made playing the couple games i kept coming back to even less convenient or just a worse experience. i stopped playing half life alyx halfway through, and came back and i couldn’t get it to run on my linux pc anymore - like, thats the single game/hardware combo valve promised would 100% work on linux.

its kinda sad because i really believed in consumer vr back then, but seeing how the industry has stagnated has shown that either it isn’t possible or we aren’t ready for cheap, good, open vr. nobody is making good vr games because there are no users and there are no users because its too expensive to get a good vr rig and there are no games.

businessfish ,
@businessfish@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

seriously in poor taste

businessfish ,
@businessfish@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

just because he did it doesnt mean we should. there is no reason we can’t be better.
