I find it fascinating that in English risk is always negative but chance isn’t always positive.
In my native language there’s a 15% chance that there won’t be a recession and an 85% risk of there being a recession.

How do I use this account on lemmy and vice-versa?
Is the upvote of lemmy the same as favorite of mastodon? (they do not sync) if not then what metric are these two uniquely gauged?

In Win7 and Win10 I always had my own Toolbar added with a bunch of .rdp, .bat and .ps1 for quick and easy access.
In Win11 that feature is missing. :(

I’d look at the Samsung Galaxy Tab A9+

Also, a factory reset on the tablet might get it to run a bit better again.

Regarding the security update situation you could try using LineageOS on it - but I imagine that would be for your use, not your daughters.

I’d say from a business perspective this is the major thing:
Real license of LXD

Per the commit message performing the re-licensing, all further contributions will be under the AGPLv3 license and all contributions from Canonical employees have been re-licensed to AGPLv3.

However, Canonical does not own the copyright on any contribution from non-employees, such as the many changes they have imported from Incus over the past few months. Those therefore remain under the Apache 2.0 license that they were contributed under.

As a result, LXD is now under a weird mix of Apache 2.0 and AGPLv3 with no clear metadata indicating what file or what part of each file is under one license or the other.

This is likely to make it very “fun” for anyone performing licensing reviews to evaluate LXD for adoption in their environment.

No problem using multiple physical and virtual ports for a pfsense in proxmox

anamethatisnt ,

There’s multiple guides on virtualizing pfsense in proxmox, but the easiest is to simply pci passthrough the nics you wanna use.
I do recommend you leave a physical nic for proxmox itself to maintain LAN access to it if your pfsense is down.

Self hosted Wetransfer?

Hello, i am looking for a self hosted application for sharing files like with wetransfer. I have tried the discontinued Firefox Send which has nice features like link expiry and works great in general but lacks authentication (only offers simple password protection). I also want the option to share with registered users. Is...

anamethatisnt ,

I guess nextcloud could do it, but you get a whole lot more in the same package.

I agree that the descriptors have to change. It’s insulting to linux beginners when you assume they’re illiterate non-it users that can’t read the paragraph explaining the install options.

anamethatisnt ,

While a linux beginner who’s been developing apps in proprietary microsoft systems for 20 years might be looking for an OS that’s easy to manage from CLI.

anamethatisnt ,

Your opnsense will have WAN (ethernet port) and your LAN side will be all virtualized. There’s no problem having VLAN 10 with 192.168.10.0/24 for your main vms and then VLAN 20 with 192.168.20.0/24 for your VPN machine. Setup deny rules in the firewall to stop the VLANs from communicating.
If this is inside your current home network you will end up with double NAT though.

LibreY vs SearXNG, which one do you suggest and why?

Hello! Today I learned about the existence of LibreY, and the project seems very interesting. I was wondering, how does it compare with SearXNG? which one is easier to self host, and which one is lighter on resource usage? I’m particolary interested in opinions of people who used both...

anamethatisnt ,

Many use SearXNG to get less personalized search and tracking. If hundreds of users appear as one user for the search engine then both tracking and personalization of the results suffer.

anamethatisnt ,

Running a Debian Bookworm hypervisor using KVM/QEMU with virt-manager for vms + Incus for lxc containers gives you a lot of freedom with how you use it.

edit: It also means you build your own hypervisor from parts - kinda like installing postfix/dovecot/mariadb/spamassassin instead of a packaged solution like mail-in-a-box. It takes more time and effort but I find I understand the underlying technologies better afterwards.

anamethatisnt ,

No problem running virt-manager on the hypervisor itself. You can also use cockpit-project.org with the cockpit-virtual-machines addon to manage kvm vms from machineip:9090

anamethatisnt ,

Yeah, you need to install cockpit on any linux you wanna manage using it, then you can use the ssh keys to setup so your cockpit session on the hypervisor gives you access to your vms too.

GUI:
kvm/qemu hypervisor (Debian Bookworm with GNOME in my case) with a real GPU - Sunshine server (github.com/LizardByte/Sunshine ) and Moonlight client (github.com/moonlight-stream/moonlight-qt ), requires a powered on monitor or a hdmi dummy plug though.
VM Server - Libvirt virt-manager from the kvm/qemu hypervisor.

Terminal:
I know I can just SSH but I usually use Cockpit (cockpit-project.org) for all my administrative/maintenance.

anamethatisnt , (edited )

I find many programs meant for servers and businesses have no problem being CLI installed, though the install is most often installed silently through intune or group policy when that’s the case.

anamethatisnt ,

The logs from Sunshine (found here localhost:47990/troubleshooting) and Cockpit (found here: localhost:9090/system/logs) are a godsend for troubleshooting. Cockpit for more than just Sunshine, having all logs collected and filterable in a webui is splendid.

anamethatisnt ,

I’m using Fedora GNOME for my pcie passthrough desktop vm and Debian Bookworm for my hypervisor and virtual servers.
When Bookworm ages I’m sure I’ll mix in other distros for vm servers to try out stuff that isn’t available in Debian Stable yet.
I’m also curious to set up a virtual NixOS and a virtual Fedora Silverblue/Atomic just to check them out.

I also don’t order the same pizza everytime.

New to Linux? Ubuntu Isn’t Your Only Option (www.howtogeek.com)

Ubuntu’s popularity often makes it the default choice for new Linux users. But there are tons of other Linux operating systems that deserve your attention. As such, I’ve highlighted some Ubuntu alternatives so you can choose based on your needs and requirements—because conformity is boring.

anamethatisnt ,

You will be able to get GNOME as the default desktop environment in many distributions and then install what extensions you want to change both appearance and function: extensions.gnome.org

You can use a bunch of extensions to get the taskbar + app menu that Windows and KDE use:
extensions.gnome.org/extension/…/dash-to-panel/ , extensions.gnome.org/extension/3628/arcmenu/ and extensions.gnome.org/…/appindicator-support/

Or make GNOME look more like macOS if thats your thing:
extensions.gnome.org/extension/…/dash2dock-lite/

Many users swear by GNOME’s default work flow though, so might wanna give it a shot before changing it.

Sounds like removing couch co-op didn’t hurt their sales. :(

anamethatisnt ,

Those of us who live with fellow nerds, obviously!

anamethatisnt ,

I much rather fix up some burgers and drink a few pints at home while playing helldivers 1 with friends than sit at the pub eating worse burgers and paying too much for the pints.

anamethatisnt , (edited )

Definitely rarer now, but four people sitting in the living room with controllers is still as fun. Helldivers, Magicka, Overcooked, Totemori, Gang Beasts and Genital Jousting are all great fun with some being easier to get into than others.

anamethatisnt ,

I agree that their choice of perspective makes local coop harder to implement due to needing splitscreen, it also means I wouldn’t want to play it with a controller.
I just hope that they keep their Helldivers 1 servers up and about, or release a patch that makes the game work offline if they don’t.

anamethatisnt ,

I had no idea but spent some time googling anyways.
The answer seems to be a conservative tech youtuber that once upon a time worked with linux tech.

Reddit user comments:

It’s really unsettling. He used to be a great Linux guy but now he’s just a nut.

I unsubscribed from his YT channel and stopped following him as he gradually began to drift from being a dorky goofball to being a right-wing apologist.

Don’t listen to Bryan Lunduke. He’s a middle aged edgelord that new Linux users get introduced to because of his smart-ass “Linux Sucks” series, and then as they learn more about Linux themselves they realize he’s just a douche who’s not worthy of their youtube views.

Workaround instead of solution:
You could buy a Wireless HDMI Transmitter and Receiver setup. Should be able to find a version where it kinda looks like a Compute Stick (HDMI end) that is powered with a USB cable.
This isn’t much easier than using an HDMI cable and unless you have use for it at home afterwards it is a costly solution:
duckduckgo.com/?q=Wireless+HDMI+Transmitter+and+R…
edit: cleaned up duckgogo link

anamethatisnt ,

I guess your “best” solution is to talk to Campus IT and sell them on the idea of buying the Microsoft Wireless Display Adapters and use as a secondary solutions with all projectors/tvs. Then all you have to do is plug in the client end that’s already there waiting for you. ;-)

Are there any immutable distros meant for NAS systems or home servers?

Edit2: OK Per feedback I am going to have a dedicated external NAS and a separate homeserver. The NAS will probably run TrueNAS. The homeserver will use an immutable os like fedora silverblue. I am doing a dedicated NAS because it can be good at doing one thing - serving files and making backups. Then my homeserver can be good...

anamethatisnt ,

What functionality do you want from your NAS? If it’s simple NFS and Samba then I imagine you can choose whatever you want really.

anamethatisnt ,

If the software you want to run has flatpak then I imagine you can try out Fedora Silverblue, Jellyfin do have a flatpak.

Personally I run my Jellyfin on a virtual Debian Bookworm server with transcoding off, my Jellyfin clients don’t need the help.
I always clone my Jellyfin server before apt update && apt upgrade to be able to rollback.
Oh, and my NAS (network attached storage) isn’t on the same machine, my Jellyfin server use Samba and /mnt/media/libraryfolders, so cloning it is quick and easy.

anamethatisnt ,

The network isn’t a bottleneck in my system.
I don’t have any 20gb bluray rips as I’m satisfied with the quality of a 5-8gb 1080p.
I don’t notice a delay when starting it, it’s just a datastream without transcoding.

anamethatisnt ,

I found this guide for setting up GPU access for Unprivileged LXC containers when I googled around:
Giving a LXC guest GPU access allows you to use a GPU in a guest while it is still available for use in the host machine.

I started using tiling window managers. What tips do you have? What packages do you use to make yours fully functional? Lost noob needs some guidance...

I decided to dive heads first into window managers and need your input for your guidance. I’m absolutely not a Linux-pro. I basically never use the terminal, just started using Github, and only used Gnome (+ KDE for 1/8th the time) for now....

scrcpy is wonderful. I have some reading apps on my phone but at home I usually use my laptop with scrcpy to read.

I got this in my .custom_bash.sh:
to phone over Wifi and view phone screen.
to set static DHCP for the phone MAC.
to use the same one in the adb connect line.
function phoneconnect(){
sudo adb start-server
adb tcpip 2233
adb connect 192.168.18.15:2233
scrcpy
}
