Same! I’m lowkey tempted to get a fancy one now, but deep down I know it just isn’t worth it.

github.com/Akylas/OSS-DocumentScanner

I use this app for scanning documents, I just tried sharing a picture to the app and running OCR on that picture, which also worked fine, so it should also fit your usecase.

I cannot make any post/comment containing the string [slash]etc[slash]passwd on lemmy.world (lemmy.world)

When I try to submit a post or comment containing the string [slash]etc[slash] passwd, the submit button goes into a loading state and spins indefinitely. The request is blocked by Cloudflare with status code 403. I can’t even search for the forbidden string. You have to check dev tools to find out what went wrong, this error...

eco_game ,

Damn even though you explained the abbreviation I still read it as Wife Approval Factor for a second and was very confused

eco_game ,

I don’t know how it works in America, but in Germany and presumably most parts of Europe, red light cameras are triggered by coils under the road (similar to speed cameras). There’s usually one coil right past the stopping line (for cars being halfway over) and another coil somewhere closer to the center of the intersection (for fully running a red light).

Are there any EV cars without any "technology"?

Like the title says, are there any EVs that just have a Bluetooth radio and that’s it? Like a normal car, not a smartphone on wheels? If not, do you all think that this will actually happen at some point? This is the main reason why I can’t (and will never) buy an EV. I like to have actual buttons everywhere on my car. I...

eco_game ,

It’s not a full car or even entertainment system, but comma.ai is an opensource autonomous driving software. Last time I looked into this was a few years ago, but basically for most newer cars you can rip out the adaptive cruise control, and effevtively replace it with autonomous driving. Either powered by certain supported phones or dedicated hardware.

eco_game ,

If your hate only goes towards touchscreens and not having physical buttons, Mazda is (or at least was) very anti-touchscreen. I haven’t done any research on their current stance or if they have good EVs, but a neighbor of mine was really happy with his Mazda ICE car for having a button for everything.

eco_game ,

In that case you can try adding before:2023 or similar to your search

eco_game OP ,

Yeah, I would just use Connected to Car BT?

I have so many ideas but so little time to properly look into Kotlin and Android dev :/

Some other ideas I had:

  • maybe also track how much I pay for parking tickets
    • notification if I’m still not driving and my ticket is about to expire
    • ocr for parking tickets
  • automatic prompt, something like Hey, you just drove x km and seem to have arrived, What do you want to call this trip?
eco_game OP ,

Hm using Tasker for this is actually a really good idea, thanks!

eco_game OP ,

Imo it looks to be very bloated for what I want. I don’t need (or necessarily want) a GPS track for the whole journey, but rather just start and endpoint. I intend to tell the distance from my cars odometer.

Also I already started making my own app by now anyway and I’m far too committed to consider other options lol

eco_game ,

Under the hood it’s also way more similar: LibreOffice uses the odt format internally (and converts docx to it on the fly, sometimes leading to some formatting weirdness). OnlyOffice on the other hand uses docx internally, meaning better compatibility with MS Office (but also some weirdness with odt files).

(I’ve used docx and odt as placeholders for all the other formats here, like pptx, xlsx, etc.)

Battery use on OLED when screen black but not "off"?

Hey, what’s up. I’ve been trying to get my phone (oneplus 8) all perfect again, after I recently decided not to use fingerprint security anymore. I now use a password, which feels right, but when I’m just sitting at my desk it feels like overkill to have to retype it so many times when I’m just checking little things....

eco_game ,

I presume your phone can’t enter deepsleep if it’s not in Standby. I’m not that knowledgeable on that topic but another point (that might be practically the same thing) is AFAIK your CPU and GPU can’t shutdown, as your phone is still on and rendering a black image.

eco_game ,

Wait InnerTune is abandoned?? That’s a bummer, imo it is literally the best music app, especially the caching is amazing.

eco_game ,

I really enjoyed Tetris (2023). The story was super riveting and I also really liked the soundtrack (mostly just “modernized” Tetris music).

eco_game ,

The newer Sony Xperias sound like a good fit for you. I haven’t used one myself, but they’re pretty decent from what I can gather.

Also it seems as if Sony is the only phone manufacturer shipping flagships with headphone jacks and SD card slots.

eco_game ,

I absolutely loved Splatoon 2, especially the DLC. It’s such a shame that you have to pay for online battles though.

eco_game ,

HoleyLight sounds like what you’re searching for. I’ve never personally tried it though.

eco_game ,

It works fine for me, perhaps you didn’t grant the app Contacts permissions?

eco_game ,

While I do mostly agree with your statement, it’s incredibly annoying when I type in a local IP for my router or server and it automatically gets turned into https.

eco_game ,

The units can be adjusted in Settings > Appearance > Units, or are you missing options there?

eco_game ,

I’d recommend just taking an hour or so to scroll through all of the recently updated apps, I found a ton of super cool small “utility apps” that way.

eco_game ,

I got this a few days ago. Previously I was using Geometric Weather, but then in Feb or so it got stuck. I’m very happy that this app (or rather the fork) is now maintained again!

eco_game ,

There’s a lemmy profile setting whether to show bots, you probably have that turned off.

eco_game ,

I have bots on and it’s mostly ever these two.

There are still reddit repost bots, but they are all on reddit repost instances. As I have those like two or three instances blocked, I don’t see any of them.

eco_game ,

Do beware, Samsung typically has a decent amount of bloat and not so privacy respecting services.

eco_game ,

Streaming, especially video, is quite challenging and expensive. The fact that discord’s video streaming was so cheap was always somewhat suspicious.

eco_game ,

Soumds like revolt might be interesting to you.

eco_game , (edited )

I’m on both, the one friend I message on matrix conveniently also hosts our instance.

Nowadays I very rarely use discord (only for server voice channels, because it’s just better). The few chats I still have on discord are bridged into matrix.

For many of my friends it was easier moving them to Signal though instead of matrix.

eco_game ,

While it’s not at the same level as Graphene OS, Samsung is pretty well supported by Lineage OS. AFAIK at least in Europe Samsung phones have an unlockable bootloader, but YMMV.

eco_game ,

On Samsung phones Samsung Gamelauncher Gaming Hub gives you the option to mute all game audio, but I’m afraid this is a Samsung exclusive feature.

Another feature I have on my Galaxy S10 is the ability to set different outputs for apps, ie. “bad sounds” from some app to phone speakers (which are muted), and the rest to my Bluetooth headphones.

On my phone this feature is called “Separate app sound” and is located in Settings > Sounds and vibration > Separate app sound. It might also be a Samsung exclusive though.

Edit: I have yet another, sadly probably Samsung exclusive, solution. Samsung Sound Assistant let’s you set a different volume for each app (like Windows volume mixer).

eco_game ,

I believe WhatsApp needs the mobile app to connect to WhatsApp’s servers at least once every two weeks.

I think your best bet would be getting the cheapest phone you can find that will run a recent WhatsApp version, and then just leaving that at home connected to the internet. You could then use any WhatsApp web client (the website, some app, a matrix bridge, …) to actually use WhatsApp on the go.

eco_game ,

Duude I tried blindly plugging in a USB-C at the back of my PC ones, I was like “Aha, gotcha” and then my PC just shut down. First came confusion, then I realized it wiggled left and right. That was incredibly scary, luckily ASRock has good protection circuits so nothing happened.

But I sure as hell haven’t blindly plugged in USB-C since then.

eco_game ,

Dolphin (Wii and Gamecube emulator) sounds like something for you.

MineTest should also fit your criteria.

I believe there are a few games on F-Droid, I haven’t tried any of them tho. Other than that, I believe the best games for you would be Wii games or an older console. Possibly also switch (with yuzu if you find an apk), but that requires a beefy phone.

eco_game OP ,

You’re probably not wrong, but the Gear VR ecosystem is quite specific and most “general” subs wouldn’t apply to it, so I’m hoping to spread some knowledge about it this way (so that it isn’t all guarded by spez).

eco_game ,

So far the Aves video player is also the only foss player I’ve found where you can freely zoom into a currently playing video.

eco_game ,

Kinda, it only let’s you zoom into the center. With Aves I can zoom into any part of the video and then drag my view around, just how you would with a picture that you’re zooming into.

Other than that though Just Player is great, and as long as I don’t need zooming it is my go to video player.

What do YouTube tech reviewers do with all the tech?

As asked in the title. Anyone have insider information? Speculations are welcomed. It just seems such an e-waste, but at the same time some reviewing more well known techs are helpful. But those whose goal is to make their video entertaining rather than informative like going on a tech shopping spree on Amazon or Aliexpress to...

eco_game ,

AFAIK a lot of the tech that they show off also isn’t actually theirs, it gets sent to them for unboxing / showcasing and then they have to send it back.

eco_game ,

For a while I tried tagging my memes (Samsung Gallery lets you make tags and assign as many to any image as you want), but that lasted about two days.

eco_game ,

I believe it’s all Pixels, but definitely the Pixel 6 family do not support DP alt mode (DisplayPort over USB-C).

If you want a Dock with video output, you have to get one that is DisplayLink compatible and I believe also install the DisplayLink app.

eco_game , (edited )

From what I can see Blockinger had its last commit 11 years ago. While it’s not on F-Droid (still FOSS though), my Tetris clone of choice is Falling Lightblocks. One super cool feature is 2 player competitive on one device using 2 game controllers.

eco_game ,

And the system would need to be installed in all street legal ebikes for that to happen.

Wouldn’t street legal ebikes not go too fast by default anyway? I feel like if that’s the case, this would mostly inconvenience people with legal ebikes and have barely any effect on illegal ones that can go faster.

eco_game ,

You can probably do this with Tasker (incredibly powerful paid app, very worth it). I believe there are also more apps like tasker which are free, but I don’t know of any examples right now or how well they would work for this.

if you run lineage or graphene on a pixel 6 or 7, what's your experience?

thinking about paying $500 for a pixel 6 to nuke it and install either lineage or graphene. Main reasons: security, I want to degoogle, hate bloatware, I want complete freedom to choose what apps I want on my device, smartphones are notoriously known for their short support cycles (to me 4 years is not enough)....

eco_game ,

Yes, you just might need to download the apk for them as there may be no app store installed.

eco_game ,

Have you tried HeliBoard yet? It’s a newish fork of openboard and has support for glide-typing.

eco_game ,

I almost walked into traffic in England once, a friend had to pull me back. Scary stuff.
