@jackpot Then they ask what's a bios? what's a product key? how do boot from USB? there is huge details your missing maybe for a Linux native 15 minutes seams reasonable but my first install took maybe 45 mins, and I'm tech competent.

Also people will be asking how do they copy over their data already on windows. The other question for many is why would I want to? sadly the general population doesnt care about open source

Can I pre-install Ubuntu on an SSD?

Ths might be a silly question, but asking those is how i learn sometimes. I’m trying to install my first Linux distro to set up a Plex server and one of the few things I know is you need a wired internet connection. My intended server location is across the house from my router, and there isnt much room there to set up...

alteropen ,

@Hazmatastic @theredcaps I think it is a bandwidth concern, especially if multiple people will be streaming from the server. WiFi is unstable too its part in parcel, wired is just required if you need something that's stable

alteropen ,

@caseyweederman @makingStuffForFun the prediction imperative will come in before that. surveillance capitalism is how they will make their fortune

I made it to Linux! What is your must-have FOSS or Free Software for linux?

Thank you so much, comrades! I am feeling pretty comfortable with linux mint, and now would like some suggestions for some absolutely necessary FOSS or free license software for the OS. So far I have the standard, Firefox, ThunderBird, LibreOffice, yada yada. Thank you again to everyone on the linux comm! sankara-salute

alteropen ,

@Strit @blakeus12 forgot about element, but its sadly quite a terrible client on Linux. although that could be the fault of my nvidia graphics

alteropen ,

@bappity @asexualchangeling sadly duck duck go is basically just a bing proxy

alteropen ,

@bappity no yeah totally I used it for ages it just sucks there is no truly independent privacy orientated browser. the closest thing to that is brave search

alteropen ,

@danielfgom @cygnus fedora is as independent of red hat as Linux mint is independent of canonical. At least as far as I know

alteropen ,

@danielfgom ah I see well either way even if fedora put a backdoor in it wouldnt exactly be a secret. maybe a compromised iso from their main website but people would quickly raise the alarm over the hashes

alteropen ,

@thethirdobject @iHUNTcriminals I would say its a no brainer if you mainly use a laptop with a trackpad. its feels like the de is setup for laptops and has great gesture support. the desktop experience is also good though once you install a handful of extensions and configure the keyboard shortcuts

alteropen ,

@Rooty @Uluganda you mean apart from the extra work it takes for devs to give support to the platform, a platform where they will get less than 1% of sales.

saying "theres no excuse" is just delusional

alteropen ,

@Rooty even 3 - 5% is not worth it for a lot of devs for the amount of time it would take. you must also consider every update also needing the same care taken to it. financially small devs don't have the resources and big devs know it would eat into their profits

alteropen ,

@flashgnash yeah they work in proton... that's not native linux. porting a windows game to native Linux is more trouble that its worth for most devs hence projects like proton

alteropen ,

@nottheengineer is this also the case with Ubuntu server? If so is there a way to turn that shit off,

alteropen ,

@nottheengineer well thanks for letting me know anyway, this probably explains a lot of the docker issues I have been encountering which are "snap only" problems, despite me installing through apt

alteropen ,

@nottheengineer what do you suggest? problem is I'm limited since my home server is a raspberry pi so I'm limited to distros that support arm

I should probably give Debian a try, but I never had a good experience with Debian desktop.

alteropen ,

@sab @OsrsNeedsF2P @GustavoM @Kidplayer_666 @db2 @AngrilyEatingMuffins @bear I bet these idiots don't even butter their drivers before baking them into the kernel

[Rant] I swear to fucking god. Windows is harder to use than Linux. Have any of you ever USED Windows lately? Holy fuck.

I’m helping a family member build a pc. He wanted to use Windows because “Linux can’t play games” despite me having a perfectly good gaming laptop running Linux that runs all my games, even graphically intensive ones....

alteropen ,

@PeterPoopshit this has to be a shitpost this person is either extremely stupid or shitposting. windows install takes 15 mins worst case. no trh install is not great because you sit there for 10 minutes hitting no no no but its not hard

alteropen ,

@winterayars @Coreidan yep did it the other day just spam no and your done in 10 mins. obvs Linux is easier than that these days but op is overreacting or stupid

alteropen ,

@happyhippo @bankimu but if your not looking to spend 2000+ on a laptop then they don't offer anything. and the price for their min spec is insane a ryzen 5 8gb or ram and 250gb of storage. no ports, pretty standard display for $1,300 is insane

alteropen ,

@andrr_464 @Kaped my grandma literally just needs to do some online banking, aka all she needs is a reliable browser. chromeOS is that. it launches chrome without any bloat. it runs on a dead cheap laptop £150 done.

no Hassel no complications works out the box no long term slow down from something like windows it just works.

obviously much of this applies for Linux to and once chromeOS reaches end of life on her laptop I will be putting Linux on there but till then it works

alteropen ,

@andrr_464 yep but for my grandparents the out of th3 box expierence matters. like I said once end of life is reached I'll put mint on it or something

alteropen ,

@JuxtaposedJaguar @andrr_464 that's better than most people, j know people who don't even try remember their passwords and just do forget password everytime

alteropen ,

@thegreenguy @TCB13 yep this exactly I first used gnome on a laptop and the experience is great the gesture support makes all the workspaces and different overviews work perfectly

then I started using it on desktop and it just doesn't work the same. it feels clunky and far from as smooth.

alteropen ,

@JackbyDev @besbin my personal solution for this is an encrypted 16tb external storage drive I keep in my car. A copy of my server drive is made once a week. not perfect solution but doesn't require much effort on my part

alteropen ,

@JackbyDev in a parking space on the other side of the road from my house, not far but deals with the whole house fire problem

alteropen ,

@ebits21 yes this is true I mean I live in the UK so we don't get extremes neither way, but maybe during winter I should keep the drive at my partners place

alteropen ,

@BreakDecks @isVeryLoud there not marketing anything they have no incentive to do so just showing off their cool software
