It took me a whole week of mucking about and bugtesting just to get the game to run without crashing every couple of minutes. It’s bizarre to me how attached some people seem to be to the idea that the game is up to the standard we expected (not saying you are, but just look at some of the comments that have been downvoted)

Transcendant ,

Thank god for Xbox game pass,

Same. I’d have been very disappointed if I paid full price, at £7.99 I don’t feel hard done by. It’s a decent game but Bethesda should be capable of so much better considering the time & money spent on the game.

Hypothetically speaking, what alterations to our biology/genome would need to occur in order for us to be able to safely drink saltwater?

Could we, in theory, use something like CRISPR to give a new baby replacement super-kidneys (or whatever organ it is that makes drinking saltwater be a bad time)? It seems like if we cracked that, we’d be set as a species....

Transcendant ,

Thanks for answering the question instead of jumping on a soapbox to preach.

Transcendant ,

I get why you feel that way. Politics is rarely black & white though, sometimes you have to pick the least worst option, so that someone doesn’t pick the worst option for you (FPTP systems)

Transcendant ,

Again, I get where you’re coming from, but this is how America ended up with Trump. Many people were convinced to stay home and ‘not vote’ for Clinton. Biden, Starmer, whichever politician you want to smear as being ‘complicit in genocide’ is being quite vocal in calls for aid and a ceasefire. The reality doesn’t match with how you’re allowing people to paint it for you.

Now more than ever, we all need to make a concerted effort not to be lead by our feels. Burned babies and tortured civvies are enraging. Cutting off water / supplies / energy is enraging. Tieing a group of children together and setting them on fire is enraging. Bombing Gaza is enraging. The hard-right Israeli government AND the Islamic fundies want us to be enraged because that’s when we make rash judgements and allow the situation to become further enflamed.

Your voice is stronger from the inside than sitting with tape over your mouth in your house. Imo.

Transcendant ,

Democrats snubbed Bernie in 2016 in favor of Hillary and fucked its voter base which cost them and us their supporters the elections and unleashed 4 years of hell on this country

Agreed. But, after that happened, you had an unpalatable choice between ‘holding your nose’ to vote for a candidate who wasn’t fucking insane, or staying home. That might not be the choice you wanted but it’s still a choice that enabled the election of Trump.

You’re right, I cannot find any recent articles of Biden personally calling for ceasefire (though I can find historical articles of him calling for ceasefires last time this conflict flared up). I can however find lots and lots of articles re progressive dems calling for ceasefire and putting pressure on him to do likewise. This is what I meant by ‘stronger voice from inside’. You have no voice on the outside.

Transcendant ,

I think we’re talking past each other.

Sorry if it’s devolved to that! It’s not me downvoting your replies btw. As far as I’m concerned this is an interesting conversation not an argument, we both clearly feel strongly / passionately about our viewpoint and imo are being fairly cogent / non-combative with each other.

Re Al Jazeera, I’ve found their reporting difficult to trust for a while, and their current reporting imo is very strongly biased against Israel. EG the hospital blast, which many indie sources are now saying is almost certainly not due to an IDF strike (which they still haven’t retracted), or the ‘church destroyed’ which turned out to be a compound that Hamas had setup in next door, with one church wall being destroyed (and obv the compound next door). Though it begs the question, where can we turn right now for genuinely independant reporting on this? Israeli sources are going to slant heavily towards Israel / IDF, Palestinian sources are going to slant heavily towards Palestine / Hamas. Which goes back to my earlier point about taking a breath and trying, somehow, to remain objective in the face of rage-inducing content.

Not voting for either party is as powerful a message as a vote since each vote is counted and voter turnout is a very telling sign

Not sure exactly how it works in USA compared to UK, but I encourage everyone who genuinely doesn’t want to vote (I say genuinely because many simply can’t be bothered to engage, which I also understand when people are fatigued after a hard day’s work) to spoil their ballot rather than not voting. That way your non-engagement is directly observed and counted. Though ensure you do it properly, one guy here last election drew a dick on the ballot paper, but because the helmet strayed into a box, that was taken as his vote.

Transcendant ,

That’s pretty genius. Unfortunately it seems that’s where his intelligence ended, he went back to the well too many times and was caught.

Transcendant ,

I know right?! “Don’t threaten me with a good time, Elmo”

Transcendant ,

Can I ask what TV programme you’re trying to find? Between 1337, eztv and TPB it’s vanishingly rare I can’t find what I’m looking for. And for those rare occasions, I can find it to stream (or download using a firefox extension called VideoDownloadHelper)

Transcendant ,

I’ve got a pixel 7a. Disabled all trackers, custom launcher, with heavy use I get over 24 hours even using 5g.

Transcendant ,

It’s not stock, I have a custom launcher (Nova) and DuckDuckGo browser installed which blocks all trackers in other apps (tracking is pretty egregious in this phone and without tracking blocking I wouldn’t recommend it)

Transcendant ,

Try blocking trackers. You will be surprised at how much of a difference it makes to battery life, and horrified at how much you’re being tracked.

Yesterday I was at 50% after 24 hours, though admittedly not the heaviest use in the last 24 hrs.

You might find the occasional app that it ‘breaks’ (which you can then disable for) but generally everything works as intended. Apps I’ve disabled blocking for are:

  • firefox
  • google play store
  • home
  • signal
  • banking / credit card

Never too late. Rote memorisation becomes more difficult as we age, but it’s not impossible. I’ve been learning one of the more difficult languages (Finnish) in my 40s for about 300 days now, and I am making progress.

Look into ‘active learning’, it’s far more effective than apps like DuoLingo (which I use heavily, it does have its place)

Transcendant ,

Yup. Just chucked it into google image search.

TBH I’m not against reposting content from reddit, we need more content here… content is content. I would prefer if people were more clear that they’re not the OP though!

tap… tap… tap… what’s that sound approaching?

Just me peg leg, matey

It’s absolutely insane how many things need turning off to gain some modicum of privacy with win10, I refuse to upgrade but imagine it’s worse in win11.

Totally understand the love for Linux. If my audio interface & DAW were compatible I would investigated switching way back. There are other interfaces which appear to be compatible, and other DAWs, but I am highly proficient in the one I’ve used for ~15 years and don’t want to invest time learning a new one; and my audio interface lets me use very, very high end emulations of hardware (UAD).

Seriously considering Linux for potential future live PA work though. Stability is appealing for live stuff!

Transcendant ,

Mmm. Good question. If it’s traumatic, I’d be concerned that it would only increase the intensity to focus on it like that.

Transcendant ,

What was wild to me, was how different he was in Dexter. Phenominal actor with an incredible range.

Transcendant ,

Exactly. When you see someone whingeing about how little they earned from x amount of streams, go look up what spotify pays per stream, do the maths, it never adds up.

It’s because they signed a shitty publishing / label deal. I’ve got plenty of music on spotify and tbh have earned more in royalties from streams than I ever did via labels in this day and age (though there was a ‘golden age’ where digital downloads paid very well, assuming the label manager wasn’t on the fiddle). Spotify could prob pay a little more per stream at this point though.

Transcendant ,

This is not true. Artists who don’t make much money on spotify are either under very poor terms with their label / publisher, or simply aren’t generating many streams.

For example, in my main genre trance, upper-B to lower-A artists can expect to make ~600 euros per release, minimum if it’s on a decent label, assuming it’s promoted properly and reaches the right playlists. It takes me 3-4 days to finish a track (to a high standard). That’s a pretty good return on investment imo.

Obv the caveat is that if you don’t do very well with promo, or are on a label that doesn’t understand how to leverage playlists, then yeah you’re not going to make much.

Transcendant ,

People won’t pay her to pretend to DJ anymore!

Can you take the lint from your dryer and make clothing?

I know its not quite that simple, I’d have to make thread first, and after I get enough, make clothing out of it. Could this actually be done? I can sew, but never made my own clothing nor have I ever made thread, so I don’t know if it could actually be done or not. I’m 100% sure the time and effort would not be worth it,...

Good advice which I read in Keith’s snarl

Transcendant ,

I’ve been learning Finnish for nearly a year. The first phrase it taught me was “Sinä olet velho”. I thought it was madness to teach me “You are a wizard”. Like, when am I ever going to use that?!

Later that year, I was performing at a forest festival in Finland, and a guy staggered past wearing a wizard hat. The way his face lit up when I yelled “Sinä olet velho!” was priceless!

Scientists Offer a New Explanation for Long Covid (www.nytimes.com)

A team of scientists is proposing a new explanation for some cases of long Covid, based on their findings that serotonin levels were lower in people with long Covid. They said that the biological pathway that their research outlines could unite many of the major theories of what causes long Covid: lingering remnants of the...

Transcendant ,

This seems like a simple thing to check. 5HTP is a known serotonin precursor, and in most countries is not a controlled substance.

BUT, to anyone reading this with long covid thinking of giving 5HTP a go, for fucks sake PLEASE treat it with respect & do your due diligence with regard to researching the effects and safety of it. Serotonin syndrome is real and deadly. If you are taking an SSRI, or other things that affect / increase serotonin levels then you prob shouldn’t be taking 5HTP.

Transcendant ,

I experienced it once. Was already on SSRI, took a 5HTP cap, forgot I had taken it, took another.

I ended up on the floor of my bedroom… made it about 2 steps towards the bathroom. Was a very bizarre sensation, I distinctly remember for about what I assume was 10 mins, I didn’t know what I was let alone who I was; utter confusion. Then I made an inexplicably-neat little puddle of puke next to my face (good job I was on my front as I was completely immobile) and shat myself, I remember hearing an ambulance go past and thinking “I need one of those”. Then just an insane amount of heat feeling like it was radiating off me.

I hope someone can learn from my fail!

There was a very weird comedy series back in the day in the UK, called ‘Jam’. Many of the sketches were surreal, sometimes quite dark, often with haunting ambient music like Brian Eno.

There’s one particular sketch that never fails to do me in, for decades this sketch has amused me. I present for your viewing pleasure: Mr. Lizard it’s utterly stupid and I love it

Transcendant ,

“Wipe them off… with windscreen wipers?”

“Well you see, it’s not strictly anything to do with me, sir.”

Those lines just kill me everytime. Mark Heap is one of my favourite comedic actors, he just seems to nail the whole ‘strange man’ vibe (check him out in Green Wing, one of his most ridiculous characters). No idea how they kept a straight face during this and it looks like the woman nearly breaks at one point!

Transcendant ,

That’s him! Mark Heap. If you liked this video (a bit of a crime that I could only find it in such low qual, his facial expressions are amazing), consider checking out a show called Green Wing. He’s sort-of a main character and very, very ridiculous in it. It’s a ‘hospital show’ but don’t let that put you off, it’s just the setting, the scenes are all pretty bizarre.

Transcendant ,

blame the fucking British and the Americans

None of the ones who made those decisions are alive anymore. Are you going to dig up their coffins and shout at the corpses?

You make some good points though. However, we can absolutely blame actors at play today for things that are happening today. Hamas committed atrocities, now Israel is going in heavy handed and exacerbating the situation. Not sure why people find it difficult to state that. Hatred, I assume.

Transcendant ,

Perhaps they didn’t use the right words. Iirc the correct term is ‘fiduciary duty’. A publicly traded company has a fiduciary duty to create value for shareholders.

The duties of some fiduciaries have been codified, for example, the statutory duty of skill and care which is imposed upon trustees by section 1 of the Trustee Act 2000 (TrA 2000) and the relationship between company directors and the company under the Companies Act 2006

www.lexisnexis.co.uk/legal/…/fiduciary-duties

Transcendant ,

There’s been so, so much amazing design for this film series over the decades. Especially with regard to the sound design (known as foley). Iirc the ‘pew pew’ laser noises were made by tapping a taut pylon line with a hammer, and the lightsaber noises were discovered by accident when a microphone was swung near a TV set (though I could be misremembering some details there, been a while since I read the book about it).

Transcendant ,

Yeah, the common phrase that “talking to yourself is the first sign of madness” has been drummed into many of us… of course if you’re experiencing auditory halucinations and replying to them, that’s bad. But it’s actually perfectly fine to talk to yourself out loud.

Transcendant ,

Mine is ctrl+shift+s, because it saves an incremental version. This way, if the client says “Actually I preferred the bassline an hour ago, can we go back?” I can say “sure, no problem!”.

It also protects in case the file is corrupted. I know so many people who just save over the same file and it always amazes me.

Transcendant ,

I totally get where you’re coming from. Try to remind yourself that:

a) life is fleeting. We’re only here for a brief moment, so why let lack of confidence stop us from doing what we want to do?

b) if anyone judges you for your fashion then they’re a sad cunt and their opinion is therefore meaningless

:)

Transcendant ,

Iirc that thing is called a frenulum.

Transcendant ,

YES. My friend recommended I do this years ago and I genuinely thought he was fucking with me; that on the first bite he’d wet himself laughing and say “gotcha”. Turns out he was right, the skin is high in fibre and a perfect tart complement to the sweetness of the fruit.

Transcendant ,

As someone cursed with bum hair, I want to do this. I just cringe at the idea of a shaving cut on my rusty sheriff badge. Did it once and the growback was deeply uncomfortable too.

I bought a Meridian body trimmer a few months back and still haven’t raised the courage to use it on intimate areas as it’s intended for, ptsd after nicks from my other shaver.

Transcendant ,

This is true. You will no longer be doing any sneaky farts when you lose nature’s muffler.

Transcendant ,

Nothing to add, just wanted to say @Rocky60 this is an excellent post!

Transcendant ,

Whatever app you’re using, check the shortcuts list and see if there’s one for incremental save… it may just save you from losing many hours of work one day! Once your brain gets over the hump of adjusting the ctrl+s reflex, of course :)

Once after a particularly long and gruelling session, I tried to ctrl+shift+s a film I was watching haha.

Transcendant ,

Got to love the anonymity of the internet ey!

Transcendant ,

Would you mind furnishing that statement with some links, articles, or some info to back it up? Iirc he’s ex-Goldman Sachs but he seems to be making moves that hedge funds / market makers do NOT like. Vs the previous guy who just let them do whatever they wanted.

If you want to see the actual baddies, look at the ‘self regulating’ agency which has gone to great lengths to hide swap data, and the company which enforced ‘position close only’ on a large number of stocks (kicking off the infamous GME saga). Hint: it wasn’t Robinhood. Robinhood was just one of many brokers who were instructed to set multiple stocks (not just GME) to ‘position close only’ aka no buying, only selling.
