Dungeon Keeper. I can still hear the sound FX of a slapped imp, or the Dark Mistress’ scream

Transcendant ,

It’s fraudulent as fuck. Hedge funds who are also market makers (oh, sure, they claim to be ‘separate’ yet repeatedly get fined for their behaviour, all while not admitting fault of course). Definitely no conflict of interest there. That’s before we even get into ‘dark pools’: www.investopedia.com/terms/d/dark-pool.asp

When a majority of trades for many companies are conducted with zero oversight, that allows bad actors to manipulate the markets. It’s madness to me that this parallel system is allowed to exist. I just picked AAPL at random, 43% of trades were made ‘off-exchange’ yesterday. ~22m shares traded with zero price action or regulation.

If they’re paying dividends to shareholders, and fatcat salaries to CEO / upper board, whilst their workers need gov topups and assistance to survive… they can get fucked.

It never fails to amaze me that there’s so much focus on ‘benefit scroungers’, whilst a majority of big businesses gain the giant benefit of cheap wages while their workers need gov assistance to get by. There are piggies with their snouts at the top, and they sit on the boards / are CEOs of big companies & multinationals.

Transcendant ,

That is fucking insane. $3 per hour wage increase in 31 years?!

Transcendant ,

Bingo. The super-rich love a financial collapse, it gives them a golden opportunity to turn disaster capitalist. All those foreclosed homes & businesses available at a knockdown price, nom nom nom.

No Man’s Sky - Finally lifting off the planet into space for the first time reignited my love of space and the cosmos. Made me feel awe and wonder

The Stanley Parable - never had a game make me laugh till I had tears in my eyes before. This game really fucks with your perception of what is real and just how common / predictable some gaming tropes have become

Transcendant ,

Not sure why someone has downvoted our subjective experience of a game we enjoy. “Fuck you for enjoying things”, right?

Transcendant ,

Yeah the lore is buried fairly deep. Raises some serious questions though! It’s a shame so many will be put off by the bad launch. I know the game won’t be for everyone but I’ve sunk so many hours. It’s almost meditative at times.

clunky to control.

This was my main frustration with Valhalla. Assassins should move fluidly and responsively when controlled by the player, not lumber about.

‘Archer’s’ Final Mission: Sterling and His Frenemies Sign Off After 142 Episodes of Awful Behavior. We Will Miss Them. (variety.com)

I first heard about FX’s “Archer” in the ready room of VAQ-135, a navy squadron who were serving an interminable deployment aboard an aircraft carrier somewhere near Midway Island. (This sounds very much like a humblebrag that Sterling Archer would obnoxiously drop into conversation). It was 2010, and the pilots had lost...

Transcendant ,

Brilliant show with a very distinctive art style. Have only watched each episode once so maybe now’s the time for a rewatch from the start.

Transcendant ,

Considering how much a ‘top spec’ PC costs (even to build DIY), let’s take a lowball figure of $2000. 2000 / 50 = 40. So 40 months, or 3.3 year of $50 a month is the equivalent of a gaming PC.

I tend to upgrade every 3-4 years. Even at $50 a month this isn’t necessarily bad value for money (imo). And especially for people who can’t DIY faced with the cost of a custom-build machine.

Transcendant ,

The way you describe it, it’s genuinely tempting to me. Mainly I use my PC for making music, and a little animating / graphic design. I tried to avoid installing any games because they just all cumulatively seem to slow down the system with all the little installers / c++ redistributables they seems to need… but of course, not being made of stone I’ve installed many!

For my next machine… maybe I’ll keep it pristine and use cloud for gaming.

Transcendant ,

It sounds the same as how here in the UK, referring to someone as ‘Pakistani’ is fine, but referring to someone as a ‘paki’ is NOT. I know plenty of Pakistani-origin people who refer to each other as paki but generally the use is in a demeaning way when it’s used by someone outside that group.

Transcendant ,

Bizarre, I actually saw the book this meme is based on, on Sunday! Was helping a friend’s mum move, saw the book cover and felt hungry.

Transcendant ,

Yes, and life hasn’t been the same since

Transcendant ,

Alfred Chicken. Impossibly difficult, with a ridiculous plot.

Transcendant ,

Up is down, grass is blue, the sky is green. Bla bla bla. It’s high time we just started treating anything Putin says as the equivalent of farts in a paper bag.

Transcendant ,

Will the books be relentlessly interrupted by shitty ads? If so, then no thanks.

The podcasts are bad enough, with their weasel-worded ‘listen to music ad-free’ tagline for premium meaning that on top of the podcasts’ ads, Spotify inserts ads at completely random points. Knowing that most people are listening to podcasts while their hands are busy doing something else

Transcendant ,

LMAO not a good start.

To start, we’re offering each Premium individual, as well as plan managers for Family and Duo accounts, 15 hours of listening per month—giving them the ability to enjoy as many titles as they want within that monthly allocation.

Sweet, so if I want to listen to audiobooks with premium, and I listen to one hour a day, by the middle of the month I have to pay to continue listening? Fuck off with this shit.

Transcendant ,

You can’t exploit it. I know some people won’t like to hear this, but Chinese expats are a security risk if they have any family still in China. It’s well known at this point that the Chinese gov threatens family members to pressure and blackmail residents abroad to perform espionage.

Transcendant ,

Good point, anything where Chinese govt can’t get an advantage by stealing proprietary info.

Transcendant ,

That whole episode was crazy to read about. Like hollywood-grade hacking skills

Transcendant ,

People are definitely more reactionary here (imo). The ‘downvote train’ can be just as powerful as reddit if other commenters don’t like what you say.

You’re being hyperbolic though if you’re referring to my comment in particular, I never said Chinese people are mindless CCP drones. I said that Chinese expats with family still in China are a security risk. I hoped that anyone reading that sentence would extrapolate from it that I meant in relation to military / national security roles, and there was not a need to directly specify that I didn’t mean every Chinese person is a security risk. Reading it back though I can see how it wasn’t very clear.

Transcendant ,

So what’s the suggestion here? What is reddit gaining from supporting Musk in this… we know that Ferretface Boy loves Elon but would he really go as far as making admins for /worldnews delete things?

With how overzealous mods on reddit can be about enforcing posting rules, it’s just as likely the story had already been posted a gazillion times and they removed all but the first link (I’ve seen this happen a few times and people were pissed because the initial post didn’t get as many upvotes / interaction)

Transcendant ,

They should’ve jumped on the modular phone idea. We don’t need a new phone every year but we could probably be talked into a new camera; a new processor; a new screen; a new antenna; etc etc

“The new antenna upgrades your wifi speed by 3%” and people would be lining up to snap that fancy new mod in.

Transcendant ,

no one buys tower PCs anymore

Is this correct? Literally typing this from a ‘tower PC’. I would never buy anything else (I use my PC for writing music, a little animating, a lot of gaming). Almost every entry on the site I’ve bought my last 3 PCs & laptops from is a ‘tower PC’. I know not every PC user is a ‘power user’ but the idea that people don’t want to upgrade their PCs anymore is surely not correct? ‘There isn’t a benefit to upgrading most parts’ what, like a GPU? Or a CPU? Or RAM? Or going from an HDD to SSD? Or adding thunderbolt capability? I’d be surprised to find a majority of PC users weren’t upgrading any parts in a 3-year cycle.

Interested what phone you have. I persevered with a Samsung Galaxy S9 for many years but it was just feeling so slow & clunky even after a refresh & new battery. Got a Pixel 7a this year, blocked all the intrusive tracking, swapped the loader for a custom, it’s brilliant.

Transcendant ,

You make a good point, whenever I do an upgrade it’s usually not viable to just upgade the CPU… as the socket type has changed, if I want a significantly better CPU then I also need a new motherboard. If I want a better GPU then I might need a better power supply.

I made a big mistake with the PC I got three units ago (PC, then laptop, then current PC), it was a custom build but I went for a cheapshit case and a cheap mobo to increase budget for other components. But then when it came time to do some upgrades, it was a complete nightmare and had to buy a nicer case / better mobo anyway!

Hello! I’m AR15U! I’m the owner of rqd2.net! I’m transgender and transrace, and questioning transage and transabled. I’m a MAP as well

What in the unmitigated fuck is this? How can someone be so ridiculous… transrace? Transage?! Transabled?!! Is this some sort of weird roleplay to make trans people look silly?

Appropriate gif

Transcendant ,

I keep seeing messages in my inbox from this post that have a good number of downvotes and are deleted by the user or a mod. This is some hornet’s nest we’ve kicked.

Transcendant ,

I don’t doubt there’s people who are trans and also paedo, I expect the same prevalence in that group as any other group. But this list of trans-things is just mental. I’m finding it hard to accept someone could unironically claim to be all those things.

Though I wonder if the transable thing is reference to those ridiculous people who like, deliberately blind or maim themselves because they ‘feel disabled’

Transcendant ,

I was out for a meal with friends just before the pandemic, waitress was a heart-stoppingly beautiful goth lady. I’d had a few drinks and blurted out “Oh my gosh, I would sacrifice my firstborn to you”… without skipping a beat she replied “Deal”. Legendary response to a drunken fool.

Transcendant ,

This exact thought (volume) occurred to me when I saw the headline. They like to say that the price of games hasn’t increased in line with inflation, but I’d be interested to know how big the market was in the 80s, 90s, 2000s and today. I’d bet the market is orders of magnitude bigger today.

Transcendant ,

That’s not what I asked though. Irrelevant information because we don’t know the economies of scale at play.

Transcendant ,

“Quite frankly, we’ve just been thanking God. You know, God’s been so good to us, and he protected us,

Never fails to amaze me how someone can completely disregard the hard work and sacrifice of other human beings and instead praise an imaginary skyguy.

Transcendant ,

Fair point!

Transcendant ,

Wow. I can see how that would’ve stung. It just feels so irrational! And, there’s no need for them to drop their god schtick when acknowledging someone’s effort. He could’ve just as easily have said “I thank god for putting people who cared around me”

Transcendant ,

Thanks for clarifying

Transcendant ,

It won’t hurt him other than financially

I promise you it will. Mar a Lago may be his home, but NY is his ‘spiritual home’ (if you can compare his lust for money and power to religious fervour).

Trump is incredibly thin-skinned. Being convicted of such large-scale fraud and banned from doing business in NY will be a massive blow to his giant ego. Further, angry people get sloppy and tend to make silly (sillier?) mistakes.

Transcendant ,

Agreed, but in life we don’t always get what we want. I’m taking my usual approach with this trump saga… prepare for the worst, hope for the best.

Transcendant ,

I got an inversion device couple of years back during the throes of an insanely-painful suspected herniated disc. The instructions were very clear that full inversion was not to last any longer than 5 minutes as it could be extremely dangerous.

Can’t imagine doing 30 mins, with no previous exposure or training, fuuuuuck.

Transcendant ,

I generally feel quite negative about this news. I’ve had two dream synths for the last decade; Access Virus ti2, and Moog Voyager. Fortunate enough to own the former, never been well off enough to afford the latter (£2500 - £4500 second hand, depending on version).

In tough economic times, the Moog business model was bound to struggle. Only wealthy or very-successful musicians could afford the upper-tier models, and the ‘entry level’ models were quite limited compared to cheaper offerings. But what always made a Moog special was… the sound!

Every synth has its own distinct character / sound. There’s just something very ‘fat’ and ‘rich’ (ironically) about the sound of a Moog synth, especially in the low end, which is where cheaper synths don’t compare so well. Switching production to cheap components is almost certainly going to mean that ‘special Moog sound’ will no longer be created, and only available via second hand market.

Transcendant ,

For sure, the OG models are only going to appreciate in value from now on. Even before this news there were some pieces I just couldn’t seem to find at a reasonable price (really wanted a pair of MF Drive but like everything Moog they’re insanely expensive, and no opportunity to try before buy so a pricey experiment)

Transcendant ,

I use Material File Browser. Replaced almost all the default google shit with FOSS alternatives, some of them may not have all the features of a slick google app but it’s a fair exchange given that they’re not relentlessly jacking my data.

Transcendant ,

Springers are mad as a box of frogs but usually quite intelligent. Rotties tend to be very protective, loyal dogs, so I’m not surprised the toddler was found with them. Good boys!

Transcendant OP ,

You’re welcome! And yes for those of us who’ve only seen his panel work, this show is such a nice thing to stumble upon. I’m wondering now how much of the show was drawn upon his own life experiences.

Transcendant OP ,

Yeah I can see why he’d be upset about that, it’s so funny and I can see a lot of similarities with things that came after. Got a strong Peep Show vibe from it, shame more people didn’t get to see it when it first came out.
