TORFdot0 , to technology in Apple responds to the Beeper iMessage saga: ‘We took steps to protect our users’

Apple finally supporting RCS should end this unless your “friends” are teenagers.

TORFdot0 , to technology in Apple responds to the Beeper iMessage saga: ‘We took steps to protect our users’

Especially with RCS coming to iMessage, rich media features will no longer be gatekept by blue bubbles.

Kids will still also bully other kids for having androids even if they downloaded an app to make their bubbles blue.

TORFdot0 , to technology in New Report: Over 40% of Google Drive Files Contain Sensitive Info

If I want my files highly available and open for collaboration, I’d trust Google’s security over rolling my own.

TORFdot0 , to technology in New Report: Over 40% of Google Drive Files Contain Sensitive Info

The article is specifically about Business Workspace accounts. The concerning part was that then about 1/3 of the sensitive files were externally shared.

To be honest, the article reads like blogspam for an up-and-coming cyber security newsletter. The “report” is just marketing for a data governance software company.

People putting sensitive documents on their personal Google drive isn’t much of a risk if they follow best security practices securing their Google account.

Lemmy but for squares; like pants are for squares

TORFdot0 OP , to retrogaming in [Zelda II]I did it!

Zelda 1 had better music, the second quest after you master it, and is still really solid.

What I was trying to say is, that at its highs, Zelda II is more fun at the original but considering from minute 1 to the end of the game, I would still take the first game as the better experience overall.

TORFdot0 , (edited ) to technology in Pluralistic: "If buying isn't owning, piracy isn't stealing"

I find the reaction to this and hbomberguy’s plagiarism video interesting. Both pirating and plagiarism are forms of infringement of intellectual property rights but one is considered ok and even just while the same voices condemn the other.

What makes ok against a faceless corporation but not ok against an independent creator? Should be wrong in both cases.

Edit: I want to acknowledge that plagiarizing a work and then selling it causes more harm than the simple act of one person pirating a piece a media

TORFdot0 , to fediverse in Lemmy's active users are up again for the first time since the exodus

I’ve noticed that there seems to be a lot of activity, enough to replace Reddit, on the most popular communities and instances. Even my more niche communities such as !fantasyfootball has had more activity lately. Although the niche ones have a way to go to be replacements for their counterparts on Reddit

TORFdot0 OP , to retrogaming in [Zelda II]I did it!

Yeah the great palace is a crazy labyrinth. I spent my first set of lives just wandering and game-overed without making any headway, happened to fall through the floor on my second set of lives and lucked into finding the right way.

TORFdot0 OP , to retrogaming in [Zelda II]I did it!

If you do mess up and miss a key, you can always use fairy to pass through the door. This is actually how I got the cross because I couldn’t figure out how to get the magic key until I could see the ghosts in old Kasuto. And search the houses for the clue

TORFdot0 , to technology in ‘Nudify’ Apps That Use AI to ‘Undress’ Women in Photos Are Soaring in Popularity

Keep in mind there is a difference between ethical and legal standards. Legally you may not need consent to alter a photo of someone unless it was a copyrighted work possibly. But ethically it definitely requires consent, especially in this context

TORFdot0 , to technology in OpenAI employees really, really did not want to go work for Microsoft

I think the point is that Microsoft is phasing out AD and Exchange by making the licensing costs prohibitively more expensive than just using their cloud identity, mail, and SaaS services.

We are still on prem for AD but that’s due to legacy software that requires it and will be that way for a while but cost will eventually have us on a cloud identity provider and it will probably be Azure

We already are on exchange online, the costs just don’t make sense to host exchange on premises unless you have a legacy reason too.

TORFdot0 , to technology in ‘Nudify’ Apps That Use AI to ‘Undress’ Women in Photos Are Soaring in Popularity

Not all nudity is but there is no non-sexual reason to use AI to undress someone without consent

TORFdot0 , to technology in ‘Nudify’ Apps That Use AI to ‘Undress’ Women in Photos Are Soaring in Popularity

It’s the sexualization of people without consent that’s a problem. Maybe casual nudity shouldn’t a problem but it should be up to the individual to whom they share that with. And “nudify” ai models go beyond casual, consensual nudity and into sexual objectification and harassment if used without consent.

TORFdot0 OP , to retrogaming in [Zelda II]I did it!

Zelda II is very much a product of its time. It lacks modern sensibilities even more-so than LOZ. I think the platforming and combat is more fun than the original but if you don’t like or have nostalgia for the way games used to be made, Zelda II will just get frustrating
