Lemmy and mastodon profiles are public so I don’t know if privacy concerns are a problem unique to federation with meta considering they could just scrape your profile if they wanted the data that bad. I’d be much more concerned about small instance admins losing funding as users migrate to instances that federate with meta until threads and the big instances are the only ones left on the fediverse

TORFdot0 , to mildlyinfuriating in I'm locked out of my 6 year old Chipotle account because they now say my email address is invalid when I login. Here is me asking for their help:

I literally can not make an account in their app. No idea why. It’s trash just keeps saying something went wrong

Ideally people would all form cooperatives and host their own instances on social media and their would be no corporate interests on the fediverse. The fediverse has a chance to to gain access to more content by federating with threads. But I don’t know if the costs or worth it. But if we don’t take the chance we may never have the mind share to become mainstream

Not on my app (Voyager for iOS)

TORFdot0 OP , to technology in Cox Media Group claims to be listening to private conversations to sell advertisements

It’s the technical hurdles that have me skeptical that they could do it, at a cost that is profitable, without it being widely known how. Either it’s novel and not being done by anyone by CMG; or it’s not, in which case why is CMG marketing like they are the only ones doing it.

But it’s probably safer to assume that everyone is already listening in so that you are prepared because you know they would if they could.

The base model isn’t really the base model. If you are buying a Mac you just have to accept you are spending $2k on it

I used to live in Cox’s service area and before I moved they were pretty much the only show in town besides overpriced AT&T UVerse DSL. AT&T actually did upgrade the service to fiber but they called to offer it after we already closed on our current home at that point which actually has awesome fiber service from a local provider.

You’re welcome. I’m hopeful that we can get native cross posting added to Lemmy at some point to make these easier to share stuff to multiple communities in the future

TORFdot0 , to technology in Twitch updates sexual content guidelines amid ‘topless’ meta backlash

Good parenting is not letting your children using twitch. Let’s be honest, the whole web is degenerate. You either have to curate absolutely every piece of content your child consumes or have to give them the skills to identify and turn off in appropriate content (which isn’t easy either)

TORFdot0 , to technology in Twitch updates sexual content guidelines amid ‘topless’ meta backlash

I typed out a multiple paragraph response to this and really it boiled down to a couple sentences so I’ll just post them instead. It’s about reputation, twitch doesn’t want to be known as a soft core porn site and if a parent sees a boob then it could impact whether they let their teenager use the site (which to be honest is there most active user base). It’s not about having priorities straight wrt sex vs violence, it’s just maximizing profit.

TORFdot0 , to technology in Apple Is Holding the Final Nail for X’s Coffin

Come on Tim Apple. Do it. You know it’s the right thing to do

Actually, with Google recently losing in court where Apple had previously won because Google was exempting some developers from its App Store rules; Apple might be actually inclined to actually enforce its rules in X’s case lest they suffer the same fate

TORFdot0 , to technology in New Report: Over 40% of Google Drive Files Contain Sensitive Info

Like I said it’s a marketing paper for a data governance software company. The numbers are to sell their product to corps that don’t know what their users are sharing, not that there isn’t a reason to share certain data externally.
