TORFdot0 , to retrogaming in Donkey Kong Country - Game Over screen

This screen combined with the somber music used to give me such an uneasy feeling. I’d close my eyes and spam A as fast as I could whenever I got a game over as a kid.

TORFdot0 , to asklemmy in How to fetch mastodon account data into lemmy instance?

The only mastodon posts that get federated to lemmy are ones that explicitly mention a community. So if someone just has a random toot, its not going to be viewable from lemmy

TORFdot0 , to games in Hogwarts Legacy has officially cleared Zelda as 2023's best-selling game worldwide

I think that the masses are mostly disengaged with terminally-online type discourse. The only reason I knew JK Rowling was TERF was because of reading it on here, so if you are only on social media to follow your old high school classmates on facebook, you’d probably never find out

TORFdot0 , to fediverse in I love Mastodon and ActivityPub. But I think Nostr is going to win. Here's why.

Nostr is really good at the one thing AP struggled with, which is identity portability.

That being said, I feel like the challenges that nostr has (the network effect, association with crypto bros, private key recovery and human readable account linking) are bigger hurdles than what AP has to overcome

I still think there is room for both to operate and a market niche for bridging services for those who want to follow people on both protocols

TORFdot0 , to technology in I lost my job after AI recruitment tool assessed my body language, says make-up artist

What the hell is this some sort of yearbook superlative? Absolutely ridiculous

TORFdot0 , to fediverse in are people still all riled up about beehaw?

I don’t care for beehaw but I don’t see why it’s any different from any other non-federated general discussion forum.

They aren’t helping the fediverse grow but they aren’t actively harming it either. It’s a live or let live thing. Being able to choose who you federate with is part of the fediverse

TORFdot0 , to fediverse in Is the bot/troll situation getting worse?

Maybe because I don’t use Lemmy at real bot hours, I haven’t seen them. Maybe see a spam bot every other day.

I also tend to sort by top 6 hours or top 12 hours so a lot of low effort content gets filtered out.

I also don’t consider people who make off the wall comments or hold opinions I disagree with or think are uniformed or stupid as trolls.

The other thing is that I comment with the philosophy that not every comment signifies a response and so if a reply is a troll or in bad faith, I just keep scrolling.

TORFdot0 , to programmer_humor in What I want to become Vs What I do

You mean I copy 2 line python scripts from StackOverflow

TORFdot0 , to games in Can someone explain to me why Honkai: Star Rail is treated as something other than trash? I keep seeing posts about it, all over.

I avoid those games. But I don’t expect others to have the same tastes as me. I’m certainly not demanding people don’t like those kind of games like OP seems to be doing about Honkai

TORFdot0 , to games in Can someone explain to me why Honkai: Star Rail is treated as something other than trash? I keep seeing posts about it, all over.

Its like Genshin. It has a very specific audience (weebs). It just happens to be a niche that is very active online. Most people who that doesn’t appeal too just don’t think about it rather than posting about something they dislike.

Its ok to let people like the things they enjoy

TORFdot0 , to selfhosted in External email server vs port forwarding/vpn

The complex part isn’t the hosting part. Its the security part, the reputation management part, the uptime part, the troubleshooting delivery part and basically every other aspect other than running postfix+dovecot

TORFdot0 , to selfhosted in External email server vs port forwarding/vpn

Hosting your own email is a bad idea. Hosting OTHER PEOPLE’S email is a REALLY BAD idea. Self-hosting mail on a vanity domain is a good exercise to learn how SMTP, DNS, IMAP and other protocols interact.

If you don’t like Google, Apple, or Microsoft then sign them up with Proton or another hosted provider. You don’t want to be the reason someone lost income because they missed out on a critical email from a client or their job application was blocked because it was sent from a host with poor reputation.

TORFdot0 , to technology in [Corp Blog] What is an evil twin attack, and should they worry you? Alternate title: should you use VPN when connecting to the public WIFI?

Even if you use https to browse, metadata such as DNS and destination IP are going to be visible to attackers without VPN.

Should you be paying extra for a VPN just for public WiFi. Probably not, but if you pay for Apple iCloud+ or Google One, you should be taking advantage of the free vpn services that come with those subscriptions

TORFdot0 , to technology in ICYMI: Some of Apple's EU changes are coming only to the iPhone, not the iPad.

Sorry, I don’t mess with AltStore/TrollStore so I’m not super knowledgeable with those options. If you do run AltStore on a Mac, I think you are then able to use JIT which you need to be able to run GCN emulation via dolphin. And I think there are also ways to use JIT over the cloud but I’m not familiar with those methods.

If you aren’t needing any emulators past GBA/DS/SNES, afterplay.io lets you play your ROMs on an unjailbroken iOS device using Safari
