One of the few examples where real technology was more advanced and practical than they predicted.

SkyeStarfall ,

Why does making things fair for everyone mean punishing the currently privileged people to you?

SkyeStarfall ,

Good. Free and Open Source Software should be the standard.

Hopefully I don’t need to point you towards the endless list of enshittification for why.

SkyeStarfall ,

In the end, that’s more or less the same thing. But the question is, do we need more people? It’s also easier to be sustainable if we require less.

While true, we don’t know how it’s gonna progress in the future. It takes time for changes to really set in, and as time goes on the differences are larger as we emit a lot more pollution now than we did 40 years ago.

It could be that there’s an inherent 30+ years lag, and we’re seeing just the start of changes. Either way, the fact that it is definitively getting weaker is worrying.

SkyeStarfall ,

I feel like this is already the case, and has been for years. Few AAA games interest me these days, especially the ones coming out of the biggest studios like EA, Ubisoft, Activision-Blizzard, etc. The only recent one was Baldur’s Gate 3, but that by itself is an exception to the norm.

Most AAA games are just complete soulless profit generators. It often feels as if any fun and experimental things get taken out because it would involve too much “risk”, and stand in the way of earning money, instead of trying to make a good or fun or unique game. Instead they are just being made for as wide of a mass appeal as possible, allergic to anything that could make the game a little more interesting and niche.

Antimatter was first observed physically back in 1932. A positron, more specifically. Its existence has been confirmed, and accepted, for ages, and some of our technology already operates using antimatter to do its tasks.

SkyeStarfall ,

Well, that’s good, but most other people either need to or want to.

SkyeStarfall ,

You always gotta maintain civility when murdering people, y’know? Because killing others is one thing, but being uncivil? We’re a civilized people, for God’s sake!

SkyeStarfall ,

Yeah. Carbon capture of flue gas would be much more efficient… but we’re also not really doing that so…

SkyeStarfall ,

Not burning it is an option though.

…it’s just cheaper not to. If you ignore the externalities for it. Which we do.

SkyeStarfall ,

And those fuckers give it to us as soon as we’re born, ensuring our inevitable demise

What a sick cruel twisted world

SkyeStarfall ,

Maybe for commercial social media? But personally I prefer if people just post if they want to, and for the platform to not exploit them for profit. Money just brings in too many bad incentives from all sides. Honestly, the more I think about it the more I don’t know how a for-profit social media can ever truly work, in a positive manner.

What if someone is queer in the workplace, and the “opinions” are about them? Or racism?

Or, what about someone refusing to vaccinate, putting others at risk?

SkyeStarfall ,

Then they should provide examples. And not just talk in big general terms.

SkyeStarfall ,

The whole point of Wayland to be a successor to X11 but not using X, made by the same devs that developed X11 to specifically move away from X. Backporting features would miss the whole point because devs left because adding new features to X was getting too difficult and messy according to them, due to how big and all-encompassing and inter-connected that protocol was.

And being punished for using Nvidia was Nvidia’s fault, not Wayland’s.

SkyeStarfall ,

The “just” there is doing a lot of work considering the devs themselves disagreed. Sorry, but, I’m going to trust their judgement.

…also the whole networked displays themselves was what caused a lot of problems, according to the devs. Using it for a modern display stack was like trying to fit a round peg in a square hole. Terminals have fallen out of favor ages ago, and personal computing devices today favour things like high responsiveness, clean images, and high refresh rates instead. And we got enough computing power to just stream a video stream directly if that’s needed now.

SkyeStarfall ,

It’s unlikely ads would bring in any significant amount of money from them se people, in that case.

Space exploration costs us a fraction of a fraction of our resources. All of our problems are mainly political ones.

More knowledge is always good. We do not know when or where or how it will come into use in the future. In addition to, yes, enticing our lives and culture. Possibly inspiring people to build a better future and to care.

For how much it costs, it’s a far better use of our resources than a lot of other things we spend them on.

Tinder thinks some people will pay almost $500 a month for more 'efficient ways to find connections' with its 'VIP' plan (www.businessinsider.com)

Tinder thinks some people will pay almost $500 a month for more ‘efficient ways to find connections’ with its ‘VIP’ plan::Tinder Select is only available to some of the dating app’s “highly engaged and active” users, and it’ll cost about $6,000 a year, Bloomberg reported.

SkyeStarfall , (edited )

This really showcases the perverse incentives of the profit motive, how it corrupts even what humans consider the most precious thing. And this is why I will never use a commercial dating app. It’s FOSS or bust. I’ll just make friends and find people other ways.

Even a subscription to a dating app very obviously shows where their incentives lie. How can a subscription ever work when the goal is to find someone… and stop using the app? They are not incentivized to have people find someone. They are incentivized to keep people desperate. They are incentivized to not have them find anyone, and keep telling them “it’s just chance! You’ll find someone eventually! You don’t want to die alone… do you? You do not want to be a sad little loser without anyone… do you? We even have these paid things to increase your chances…”

It’s downright fucked up.

Not to even mention the whole gross things like having to “market yourself”. Removing all of humanity from the experience and instead treating yourself like a fucking product.

And the truth is, in my experience… it’s really not that hard to meet people if you just work on becoming a better person (which isn’t easy, to be fair, but necessary, especially since you will struggle with getting much out of love if you don’t), and are actually getting out there. Just meeting new people and friends without much expectations. Whether it’s on a friend’s party, board game night at your university, or whatever interests you have. Because too often I think people just don’t meet many new people in general, and just treat getting a partner like a goal, instead of forming new connections. Eventually you may meet someone you click with. After all, people of your preferred gender(s) are looking for others too.

Not even though. The things I learned about in my bachelor’s and master’s didn’t suddenly get mase obsolete.

I’d like to see the innovation that makes algorithm theory obsolete.

SkyeStarfall ,

How is it human nature when not every human acts like this?

I’m not one privy to throwing out slurs or being verbally abusive in stressful situations. And neither are most of my friends.

SkyeStarfall ,

I think you and I have a very different definition of verbally abusive

SkyeStarfall ,

…this isn’t even a good argument to use against me, because I, quite literally, never say mean things to or about my friends because of pressure or competitions or whatever. Hell, I don’t think I ever even talked mean about someone behind their back, even if they may deserve it for doing something bad. I probably am more deliberate and gentle with my words than I ought to sometimes.

And my point was responding to your hypothetical, calling your friend mean things as a joke and the other person understands that doesn’t count as abuse… because it’s not meant to be taken seriously. And was not meant seriously in the moment either. You literally said “…out of friendship”.

…not something I ever do, either. Seriously. I don’t even get how being verbally abusive is human nature.

SkyeStarfall ,

Eh, I don’t know if that was much better, Churchill has quite the history with India…

SkyeStarfall ,

Oil companies would love for energy to be wasted. It means more demand for them.

SkyeStarfall ,

Yeah, if they didn’t do this and literally just said “from this future version royalties from high earners will need to be paid, as we need an income source. The old version will be a LTS release.” and it would have been literally fine.

But retroactively screwing people like this? Obviously they will lose trust, and I do not understand how they didn’t understand that.

SkyeStarfall ,

The funny thing about selling valve, what would it even give for Gabe? He’s already filthy rich. What more could one want with more money?

Saying no to selling only makes sense in his position, in my opinion. At least I personally would think so. Because then you still keep what is effectively your creation, and can use it to shape the world.

At some point you really do just have enough money.

SkyeStarfall ,

Gabe seems to be able to handle wealth much better than notch, at least. If he would have been susceptible to falling off the deep end like notch, he would have already done so.

SkyeStarfall ,

Know what, that Gabe hasn’t fallen of the deep end like notch? Well, mostly by the lack of any controversy with him personally. Sure that’s not a perfect measure, but it still puts him above notch.

SkyeStarfall ,

Thermoses are commonly used, and they even have a vacuum inside!

If you don’t care about keeping the internal temperature, there’s a lot of options for good reusable water containers. Why should we even use disposable containers if we can avoid it?

SkyeStarfall ,

Are you missing the point that plastic is used because it is cheaper, not because it is better for humanity and nature?

It’s like saying “so go ahead and fix the climate, if fixing the climate is so good for us”. What exactly do you think the problem is?

SkyeStarfall ,

Tricked people into buying water they can get for near free from the tap

Possibly the biggest grift in history

SkyeStarfall ,

Smalltalk is still being used? That’s really surprising honestly.

SkyeStarfall ,

While it was funny, it probably is for the best. Especially if a kid uses the system it might legitimately scare the shit out of them lol

I wouldn’t be surprised if a kid thought the police was gonna break in now

SkyeStarfall ,

What sucks is that you have to keep it for yourself, otherwise people will think negatively of you. Because for some reason caring about animals or the climate is cringe or something idk, like it’s something to almost be embarrassed about. Which is doubly strange when animal abuse is often considered very bad by those very same people.

But I guess for many caring about other people in general is cringe as well, as long as they are sufficiently emotionally distanced, so ¯\(ツ)/¯ I just wish it wasn’t, and that caring for others was the baseline more than anything else.

SkyeStarfall ,

It shows where Microsoft’s mind is at. And it won’t stop here.

SkyeStarfall ,

Given away? Windows is a paid product. And there are other (free!) operating systems that are not driven by profit.

SkyeStarfall ,

…having a demo version of windows does not count as “having it”.

It’s a paid product. Windows Home costs 139$. And if you bought a laptop or pre-built PC with windows on it, you have already paid for the license as part of the price. And since most people buy pre-built PCs, or laptops, most people thus do pay for the windows license.

SkyeStarfall ,

I feel like you didn’t read my reply

In addition, the paid versions still track you

SkyeStarfall ,

Water is effectively the ash equivalent of hydrogen. If you burn carbon stuff you get ash from the impurities as well as CO2 (and some other possible things), and when you burn hydrogen you get water.

You cannot burn water because it’s already burnt.

SkyeStarfall ,

For 1., the big issue is that there constantly are appearing new standards in display technologies. Two semi-recent examples are HDR and VRR, both of which X11 struggles with, and implementing those into X11 has been said to be painful by its developers.
