It’s like watching sports, except you also have someone cracking jokes and being effectively a stand-up comedian.

But also, you’re assuming people always actively watch, which is not always the case. I tend to play a game on my main stream, while having a stream (or vod) open on another.

In addition, it’s also a bit like hanging out with a friend and watching them play. It’s basically sharing stuff and experiences with others, which is fun, even if you’re not a direct participant.

…and also, as the other commenter mentioned, there are games which you don’t really want to play, but are still interesting to watch.

SkyeStarfall ,

Then, at your new job, you see garbage code and wonder what dumbass would put global variables everywhere

SkyeStarfall ,

Except that’s exactly what it is allowed to in algebra.

Sure, in most equations you solve in early algebra school there is only one possible value for the variables. But in many equations there can be multiple, or even infinite. It’s an unknown, and the contents can vary (depending on other constraints, ie. The rest of the equation(s)).

SkyeStarfall ,

It does feel nice to embrace your body, and like, make it more “your own”. It’s kinda like expressing your autonomy over it.

If a train fails, at worst that will happen is it will stop. When a space station fails, the worst that will happen is everyone inside dies.

In addition, a space station is far more expensive, and it may be simply too expensive to still maintain old technology. Ideally, at some point, one will replace it with a newer, more modern, space station. Which will both be cheaper, and allow more, novel, science to be done. Although I don’t know if there is any plan for that.

I’d like to see a space station with a rotating ring, that generates artificial gravity through centrifugal acceleration.

SkyeStarfall ,

I wish the world was better at just giving a ton of money to science and space. It’s such an obvious use of money, if you ask me.

Especially since the future of humanity, given that we survive, is in space. There is a lot of potential for space-based infrastructure.

SkyeStarfall ,

It kinda shows the dominance humans have over the planet. We affect nearly every part of it. Nearly everything is light up by our lights.

To the point where it’s visible from space. From space, it’s as if we have altered all of the night’s topography.

SkyeStarfall ,

Can you provide an example of this “expected behaviour”?

SkyeStarfall ,

Yeah… sorry if I am very skeptical of your criticism…

99% of the time anyone says what you say… there’s a reason for it.

SkyeStarfall ,

Yes, exactly, the developed world should aid the developing world as much as possible in providing them clean technologies.

We are rich enough. We can afford that. And we all benefit in the end (because, after all, a lot of our supplies originate from developing countries).

SkyeStarfall ,

It does! I want to be taxed more to help others in need, and for the betterment of all.

SkyeStarfall ,

I already do, but that’s completely missing the point.

Donating isn’t enough to solve the issue, and, moreover, it puts all of the onus on the good-willed people, which is just super convenient for you, isn’t it?

No, everyone needs to contribute to a better future. Such economic individualism is what caused these problems in the first place.

SkyeStarfall ,

It won’t for as long as all the power is in the capital owner’s hands.

SkyeStarfall ,

But a lot of jobs did get automated away. And serious consequences did occur from that. Sometimes places rebound from it, but sometimes they did not. And at some point… there will be more people than jobs for them to do, as we continue automating.

In the end, the base foundation for capitalism will be broken, and we will be in an economic crisis of unprecedented scales.

SkyeStarfall ,

Yes, but the problem is, we are stuck with the system until we force a societal level change. Capitalism works plenty well enough for the powerful, and they aren’t willing to let go that easily.

SkyeStarfall ,

If working from home was standard, there’d be less need for offices, and less, smaller, offices would exist. Leading to less energy wasted in heating offices (as well as .kre space for residential).

SkyeStarfall ,

Yeah, and we already have drone lightshows

It would especially be effective in cities, with a high density of people. And the base cost would not be that large compared to normal advertising spots, which already go for a lot of money.

Basically, if it was legal, it would have already been done.

SkyeStarfall ,

My biggest argument for Linux is: Windows isn’t going to get better, but Linux will.

SkyeStarfall ,

militant vegans

Well, then don’t. But don’t be surprised when things keep getting worse.

SkyeStarfall ,

The thing is, allowing people to give shit education to their kids shouldn’t even be allowed, because that removes the autonomy of the child itself.

Removing sex ed is basically saying that people shouldn’t be allowed to know information about their own bodies and minds which is absurd when you think about it. But I guess that’s the state of politics now. I just feel bad for the kids.

SkyeStarfall ,

I’ve been playing delta V: Rings of Saturn recently

SkyeStarfall ,

Wait…

This isn’t the onion???

What the fuck lmao

SkyeStarfall ,

Unfortunately for you, not all asexual people don’t have sex. The amount of people you respect just keeps on dwindling 😔

SkyeStarfall ,

Yes I know, but I legitimately thought it was the onion. It took me until I was reading the comments.

SkyeStarfall ,

True, but it’s always like, planes are more expensive in the long run.

It’s more expensive to build a solar panel than burn coal. But after the coal has been burned, the solar panel still stays up.

SkyeStarfall ,

You know fuckcars just asks to have infrastructure like Europe, right?

And as someone living in Europe… it’s great!

Also, the USA literally used to have a train network going through darn near every village. It existed before cars, after all.

SkyeStarfall ,

From what I know, this is one of the things that make the car-dependency in the US a serious issue

I live in the capital of Norway, and damn near everything here is in walkable distance, and it’s so great. If I go somewhere I either take the public transit and/or walk, which really does add up over time. I can end up walking for many hours each week, which doesn’t feel burdensome or boring, and can effectively replace the treadmill. Then maybe take a few more brisk walks beside the river if I feel like it or something like that, which is nicer than in a gym.

SkyeStarfall ,

Paying for a service ensures your incentives (mostly) align. Kagi’s incentive is to make a good search that makes you want to pay for it, google’s incentives are to gather your data to either sell or use themselves, and show you as many ads as possible.

SkyeStarfall ,

…that they ask you to actually pay for the privilege. Because remember, windows isn’t actually free (and you pay for it if you buy a pre-built).

SkyeStarfall ,

…don’t downplay USA’s oppression just because it’s not as bad in some ways. The US is quite bad on many fronts, even when compared with China. For example, abortion in China is legal, and the US incarcerates proportionally more people to what china does (although admittidly those are just public numbers).

Sure, I still would prefer to live in the US to China… but it still ranks quite far down compared to many many other nations.

SkyeStarfall ,

Nah, they’re both bad.

SkyeStarfall ,

Good

SkyeStarfall ,

Just because you cannot empirically measure something (at least at the moment), doesn’t mean it can’t be true.

Take consciousness, for example. We all know we have it. But we cannot empirically prove it. Does that mean consciousness doesn’t exist? No, not at all.

SkyeStarfall ,

This was a very quick way of saying “I’m stuck in the 2010s and refuse to let go”

SkyeStarfall ,

In the end, the rich and powerful only live in wealth because of the supply chain and, ultimately, the workers.

If civilization crumbles, so does their little empire.

SkyeStarfall ,

Depending on what one means by normalcy, we have already started to deviate from it. With it mostly being felt economically, at the moment.

SkyeStarfall ,

Computers use base 2, binary. Whether humans use base 10 or base 60 is irrelevant.

SkyeStarfall ,

What do you mean algorithms are not in base 2? What else are they in?

Just because you have human readable code which uses base 10 doesn’t mean it isn’t all translated to binary down the line. If that’s what you’re referring to, of course. Under the hood it’s all binary, and always has been.

SkyeStarfall ,

Okay, walk me through how you think the code an algorithm is written in gets processed by the computer step by step, please. How do you think a computer operates and is programmed?

Let’s say you have code to tell the computer to calculate 3 + 5, in, say, C, because that’s close to assembly. What happens on the technical level?

SkyeStarfall ,

Then explain to me the fundamentals you are referring to.

Because if you are wondering about how a computer processes information, I can tell you. I can then back it up with sources, and how code gets decoded into assembly, and how assembly is interpreted (spoiler alert, it’s binary, as it’s a direct representation of the digital circuits on the hardware level, which operate based on binary states, on and off). You just have to ask.

SkyeStarfall ,

…then please stop spreading misinformation about how computers work.

SkyeStarfall ,

Computer science is a field I very much have knowledge in, and I could explain it all, but you said, in no uncertain terms, you are not interested in a discussion.

So I don’t know what more to tell you, beyond, you are mistaken, and I could clarify if you so wished.

SkyeStarfall ,

Lol

Sweden isn’t broken because of immigration

Don’t be so quick to believe in right wing lies

SkyeStarfall , (edited )

Do you know why gangs form? It’s much closer related to poverty and other systemic issues, than who the people themselves are. Being a gangster is not something that’s in your genes, it’s formed from environmental factors. Gangs come into existence because the system fails them, and they fall through the cracks.

When someone immigrates its likely due to a strong need to do so. And if you’re new to a country, you won’t know anyone, or have a solid grasp on the language, have little money, and likely struggle to find a job. These are the factors that cause criminal activity. They require active intervention to handle. And, very coincidentally, Sweden has been defunding or privatizing a lot of its public welfare state in recent times.

For example, someone being lonely and unable to find a job is a prime target for bad stuff. This is the target demographic of the alt-right pipeline, for example. Which also, by the way, very much is a thing that operates on non-immigrants too, it’s just that they tend to go through politics, removing the rights of others, bigotry in politics, or move towards a police state.

It’s short sighted to look at these problems as some individual failings, instead of the systemic issues that they are.

If you have depression and tried to commit suicide, will you always end up depressed and try to end your life?

Or is there more to it all?

Mental illness is not that straightforward.

SkyeStarfall ,

Sure. I already trust professionals with my life, why won’t I here?

Magnetism only feels like magic, because we don't have biological sensors for it

Think about it. Isn’t light+eyes and ears+sound just the same in terms of their “influence at a distance”? We don’t feel that as abnormal or magic - simply because we’ve sensors for them and are used to it. But physically speaking light and magnetism are based on electromagnetic forces.

SkyeStarfall ,

In addition, light and magnetism is the same field. The electromagnetic field. It’s just different forms of it.
