The thing about WordPress federation… Nothing shows up outside of the actual blog unless it was published after the federation happened.

There mere existence of green & blue bubbles is entirely an Apple thing.

RxBrad , (edited )
@RxBrad@lemmings.world avatar

Google’s messages app also uses different colours for SMS and their RCS.

Um. No, it literally doesn’t.

In a group text, the bubbles are all the same color. Each person’s name that shows up above the bubble is a random color that corresponds to nothing.

If you start a one-on-one text chat with someone, there’s a little speech bubble 🗨 that shows up next to their avatar in your list of chats if it’s an RCS chat. That’s the only way to identify RCS chats.

EDIT: Also your messages on your phone are dark blue for RCS messages you send, and light blue for SMS/MMS messages you send.

RxBrad ,
@RxBrad@lemmings.world avatar

Again, this is all in context to teens bullying each other over having the “wrong phone”.

Unless, of course, you’re saying a teen might bully THEMSELF for having the wrong phone. The different-colored bubble is for only your own texts.

Oh, terrific.

Let’s just make every single functionality in cars be a separate paid subscription service.

RxBrad ,
@RxBrad@lemmings.world avatar

Switch to a PAYG account. Continue to use Always Free resources. Still pay nothing. And don’t get your account yoinked for underutilization anymore.

That’s worked for me so far, for almost a year now. (knock on wood)

RxBrad ,

OP’s perfect world.

Buy game. Install game. Launch game. “YOU WIN!”

RxBrad ,
@RxBrad@lemmings.world avatar

Honestly, I can’t stand Soulsbornes.

It’s okay to be bad at stuff. And, surprise! All of us are, no matter how many people tell us we’re perfect at everything and can do no wrong.

I’m not going to let it ruin my day like OP if a videogame tells me I did less than SSS performance on a level.

RxBrad ,
@RxBrad@lemmings.world avatar

I suppose I could’ve been less of a butthole about it…

But I just look at the letter grade on games like Devil May Cry or Final Fantasy 13 and think “why is that even here?”.

Then I just pay no attention to it at all. It’s not like a bad grade means you beat the level any less.

And if they base trophies off it, then I don’t try getting all the trophies. More often than not, getting a Platinum Trophy on a game sucks all of the fun out of it anyways. Hard pass.

RxBrad ,
@RxBrad@lemmings.world avatar

Communities are going quiet.

Bots posting links to AI spam websites are taking the place of the old posters & commenters.

Moderation is non-existent, and spam sits unchecked in /c’s like mildlyinteresting.

RxBrad ,
@RxBrad@lemmings.world avatar

There are a lot of Firefish companies out there.

I worry a little that they’ll need to rebrand again in the not-too-distant future.

RxBrad ,
@RxBrad@lemmings.world avatar

We just cool with spamming random spam to mildly interesting now?

RxBrad ,
@RxBrad@lemmings.world avatar

No.

This is not what Discord is for.

People need to stop trying to use Discord as a forum, or a wiki, or a website, or a file repo, or as the Support page for a product.

Discord is group chat. You say something. It’s relavent for five minutes. Then it might as well have never happened.

As of right now, firefish.social has been down for nearly 2 days upgrading and changing databases, as their data migration is taking longer than expected. 🤞 (lemmy.world)

Two thumbs up dev(s), hope you’re doing okay and getting some sleep in between. Had some rough production upgrades in my life, and this sounds like a pretty bad one. 😖

RxBrad ,
@RxBrad@lemmings.world avatar

You only have to look at the dev’s pinned posts on their Firefish account to see what you’re talking about.

I’d asked the dev (on the official Firefish account) whether there would be a Docker release for the latest hotfix beta, and got a lecture and an “unamused” 😒 emoji reaction. That was kind of the last straw after dealing with some fairly broken federation on my selfhosted Firefish server.

So, I’m back on Mastodon after a month-long experiment with Firefish.

Web search is rapidly getting worse & worse, unfortunately. Thanks, AI & SEO-chasers…

RxBrad ,
@RxBrad@lemmings.world avatar

Probably for the best. The Deck certification process on games would probably be annoying if they had a whole bunch of revisions with only like 10% difference in performance.

Wait a few years and make the next one a meaningful jump.

RxBrad ,
@RxBrad@lemmings.world avatar

I’m not sure federating is retroactive on any of these platforms. (EDIT: Except possibly Akkoma?)

So any posts you made prior to installing the plugin won’t show up anywhere outside of your actual WordPress blog.

RxBrad ,
@RxBrad@lemmings.world avatar

Valve pockets 30% of almost every PC game sale by every company ever.

Honestly, I’m surprised that number isn’t higher.

WordPress blogs can now be followed in the fediverse, including Mastodon (news.yahoo.com)

In March, WordPress.com owner Automattic made a commitment to the fediverse – the decentralized social networks that include the Twitter rival Mastodon and others – with the acquisition of an ActivityPub plug-in that allows WordPress blogs to reach readers on other federated platforms. Now, the company is announcing...

RxBrad ,
@RxBrad@lemmings.world avatar

Kind of a bummer that only the content you post after installing the plugin actually gets published anywhere. But that’s federation.

What about a new mixed-feed which merges the Subscribed, Local and All feed based on probabilities customable by the user e.g. 10/40/50 or 0/20/80? (lemmy.world)

This would push users toward local posts (especially on smaller instances) while still supporting a better distribution of user engagement over the threadiverse. And if you don’t trust that it was implemented correctly – you can simply check it by counting the amounts of posts against your chosen probabilities....

I find it interesting that many of us ran screaming from the corporate Algorithms that warped our brains for the last 10+ years.

And now we’re trying to put algorithms here.

RxBrad ,
@RxBrad@lemmings.world avatar

Heck, I didn’t even state an opinion.

The venom in the replies is real, though.

RxBrad ,
@RxBrad@lemmings.world avatar

I see what you did there.

RxBrad ,
@RxBrad@lemmings.world avatar

I’m maybe 2/3 through.

The voice acting is extremely excellent. It’s also not anime, if that’s what you’re in it for. So, no awkward hyperventilating between sentences. Female characters don’t all sound like screeching children. And intonation is what an actual human would use in actual speech.

The side quests in the game are definitely pretty awful, though.

RxBrad ,
@RxBrad@lemmings.world avatar

Mildly interesting?

There’s a reason I only visit my subscribed communities. This ain’t it.

RxBrad ,
@RxBrad@lemmings.world avatar

I like old school Final Fantasy. But I also like a good braindead story game. And that’s pretty much what 16 is (well, as braindead as it can get when the game has a built-in Pepe Silvia string map to explain what’s going on)

Even on the “hard” not-story mode, if you happen to fail a boss fight, your second try is in ultra-easy mode. You get all of your potions back, and the boss is at half-health or something.

RxBrad ,
@RxBrad@lemmings.world avatar

I found myself streaming PC & PS5 games to my 3+ way more than I expected to. Probably 75% of my usage so far.

That wouldn’t be much fun on a 4:3 screen.

RxBrad ,

Hey Google… I see you releasing this phone 4 days after the expiration date of the $100 Play Store vouchers that many of us have stashed away.

RxBrad ,
@RxBrad@lemmings.world avatar

Last year Google had a thing for past customers where if someone used your code when they bought a Pixel, both you and they got a $100 voucher.

Those expire on the last day of September.

Not counting games that were unfun because of bugs, what’s the most unfun video game that you’ve played and what made it unfun?

Most of the video games I’ve played were pretty good. The only one I can think of that I didn’t like was MySims Kingdom for the Nintendo DS. Dropped that pretty quickly. It was a long while ago, but I’ll guess it was because there were too many fetch quests and annoying controls.

RxBrad ,
@RxBrad@lemmings.world avatar

Bloodborne.

It didn’t even feel like a game. It was simply pattern-recognition torture.

RxBrad ,
@RxBrad@lemmings.world avatar

One nice thing about smaller instances… Fewer people to bully the admin into constantly defederating the Monster of the Week.

It seems like the bigger the instance, the more posts you see like this.

RxBrad , (edited )
@RxBrad@lemmings.world avatar

I bought every FromSoft game up to DS3 during various sales because I’d heard unanimously how amazing they were.

Then I eventually played Bloodborne. Haaaaaated it. Never touched any of the other games I bought, and never plan to.

RxBrad ,
@RxBrad@lemmings.world avatar

I guess I sucked at it. I played for 10-12 hours and didn’t beat a single boss. Graveyard Werewolf Dude and Weird Bridge Monster would just wreck me on the rare occasion I could actually make it to them.

After giving up, I learned online that shooting your gun is not actually a range weapon, but it’s meant to parry. Stuff like that – unintuitive mechanics you’d only know about if you were nuts-deep in “the community” – I have little patience for.

And mostly, I’m not playing videogames to prove myself to anyone. I want to have fun – not torture myself.

RxBrad ,
@RxBrad@lemmings.world avatar

What’ll bite me is that almost every single game I “own” are the PSPlus freebies I’ve claimed over the years…

So, I just added another year to my sub ahead of the price increase.

I’m weak.

RxBrad ,
@RxBrad@lemmings.world avatar

Cyberpunk is out of people’s minds enough at this point, that to continue devoting resources to it would be a waste.

I’m honestly surprised they rode it as far as they did. Though I do wish they’d have delayed its release until the initial product could’ve been what we saw when they did the PS5/Series X version releases.

RxBrad ,
@RxBrad@lemmings.world avatar

For all the fucks’ sakes, people.

Yes, Meta sucks. But at least get your shit together before you all start falling over each other to say how these ToS changes mean that Zuck has now given birth to Time Travelling Baby Hitler or some shit.

Meta says, for Threads to federate, they access the same data any instance does when it federates.

And as far as LEMMY.world defederating from Threads… LEMMY. That’s like saying Twitter (or W, or whatever the hell it is now), shouldn’t put Facebook posts in its timeline. Threads is a Mastodon concern. Not Lemmy.

🤦‍♂️ Ya fuckin’ tinfoil hat nerds. I love you all. But God damn.

RxBrad ,
@RxBrad@lemmings.world avatar

Technically. Yes.

But doing so is onerous enough that I can’t see it as any sort of “threat”.

And again… Defederating does absolutely zero to restrict Meta from being able to access your info. Defederating means you don’t see Meta. It doesn’t block Meta from seeing you.

You don’t even need to dip your toes into ActivityPub to scrape most of the data. It’s public – aside (I think) from just user IP addresses on Mastodon. And in the case of Lemmy, I don’t think there’s anything you can’t access from outside of ActivityPub.

RxBrad ,
@RxBrad@lemmings.world avatar

Without jumping through flaming hoops, though… does the “Threads” tab really ever talk to the “Microblog” tab? (aside from your kbin account being able to interface with both)

(I do find it funny that kbin’s “Threads” is their Lemmy/Reddit-like, and not their Mastodon/Threads/Twitter-like)

RxBrad ,
@RxBrad@lemmings.world avatar

You can follow @user or @community on Mastodon. But you just get blasted by every post and comment, one by one, in unthreaded CHRONOLOGICAL order.

So while you can do it, the question is… should you?

RxBrad ,
@RxBrad@lemmings.world avatar

If all you’re looking for is eloquence and footnotes, this person in this post’s comments already has you covered…

RxBrad ,
@RxBrad@lemmings.world avatar

Even DISALLLOW_UNAUTHENTICATED_API_ACCESS can be easily bypassed by creating a client that logs into mastodon.social (for example), and just gobbles up the Federated feed.

It’s what the FediBuzz relays are now doing in order to keep single-user instances viable and not funnel everyone to the same 3 instances.

Unfortunately, if Meta wants to be shitty, they’ll be shitty. Even stuff like robots.txt & nofollow tags are just polite requests that can be ignored by shitheads.

RxBrad ,
@RxBrad@lemmings.world avatar

Multiplayer and three free games added to your library every month.

RxBrad ,
@RxBrad@lemmings.world avatar

I mean… I get that it’s the thing to do right now – haphazardly throwing more money than you can afford at every service, streamer, Patreon, Kickstarter, product or vague idea that you pledge your “support” to. Then five minutes later, complaining about how you don’t have enough money for food/housing/whatever; and blaming someone else for that.

I probably spend $100 or less per year on games, and I’ve got plenty to keep me busy until I’m a corpse.

https://lemmings.world/pictrs/image/25538570-df04-4797-8f48-50843c1af1d2.png

BG3 looks like a good game. I’ll play it when I get around to it. And by that time, it’ll be far cheaper than $60.

Being angry at someone for saving some money on something that you paid full price on, though? That’s definitely a way to approach things.
