I've only read one Ian McEwan book, On Chesil Beach, donkey's years ago, and I'm afraid I didn't see what all the fuss was about, but the premise of this one looks interesting, and it's short at least. @bookstodon

In 2019, every morning for months I ate pop tarts for breakfast when I first got to work.

Then I got sick of them and didn’t eat them again for 5 years until last week. Now I’m eating them every day again lol.

Anyone else do that where you eat a same food every day until you’re sick of it and don’t eat it again until years later?

@actuallyautistic

18+ RolloTreadway ,
@RolloTreadway@beige.party avatar

@ashleyspencer @actuallyautistic Pretty much. I don't usually eat the same thing every day, but I certainly eat certain things very regularly, and then not again for years.

If possible, I try not to let myself eat something so much that I wear it out, because that will reduce the number of things I'm able to eat.

I’ve been reading about “stimming in autism”, which up until now was very confusing to me mostly because that’s the one point kept being repeated in the community being a must for an autistic individual. And I can’t relate to that at all.

Then I came across something that describes the purpose of ‘stimming’ is to deal with extra energy. Then it kinda hit me, I’ve never had the need to stim because I’m a low energy person in general.

I get overwhelmed with activities when they involve raising heart rates (yes, THAT too). I like quiet things, dead of night etc. Once at a time in my life, I was pretty sure I could hear flow of electricity.

So my question to the community: do you think stimming is a must for autistic people? Do you relate to it? Anyone know of any low energy stimming that gets overlooked?

Thanks! Much love!! 💕 @actuallyautistic

RolloTreadway ,
@RolloTreadway@beige.party avatar

@farah @actuallyautistic I absolutely don't think that stimming is inherent to being autistic. I think some of the things I do probably count as stimming, but 99% of what I see referred to as stimming is alien to me.

It frequently bothers me that I see so much 'we all do this', 'we all like that' in the community. I don't think it's helpful, and it can be othering and ostracising to autistic people (like me) who don't fit into what seems to be common niches.

LehtoriTuomo , to actuallyautistic

Someone asked whether I ever played Doom. No, not really. I told that I've never liked first person shooters and then it hit me. I never liked them as there's too much going on. In fact, I've never been a big fan of any types of shooters, the only exception being Cannon Fodder. Now, with the new-found autistic perspective, it makes perfect sense. Sensory overdrive all the time equals no fun. How about my fellow autistics, any fans of shooters?

RolloTreadway ,

@LehtoriTuomo @actuallyautistic I've never got on with shooters. It might well be what you say - too much going on. I tend to find them annoying and tedious.

I’ve heard today that people don’t form habits, they create routines.
I thought of my ‘useful habits’ - and yeah, right, they are routines.
But then I thought: well, what’s the difference then? What is a habit if NOT a routine?
Can anyone help me with examples of what may be a habit, but not a routine?

@actuallyautistic

RolloTreadway ,
@RolloTreadway@beige.party avatar

@olena @actuallyautistic To my mind, the difference is that a routine has a schedule, even if it's a vague one - such as 'I must do x before I do y', or 'I must do z at some point before I try to sleep'.

A habit, on the other hand, happens not within a schedule but whenever you feel it is required. For example, 'I go for a run every day after work' is a routine; 'I go for a run every time I feel like I've been sitting still for too long' is a habit.

That's how I see it, anyway. Other opinions are available.

Here's a handy guide to check yourself against; which way do you display/store/shelve your ?

RolloTreadway ,
@RolloTreadway@beige.party avatar

@ChrisMayLA6 @bookstodon My fiction books are haphazardly squeezed into an insufficient amount of bookshelf space, some upright and some on their side and some on top of others, very roughly alphabetised. But the one thing I do insist upon is that they are stored upside down until I've read them.

Non-fiction are scattered around all sorts of storage spaces, wherever I have room. I try to keep broad subjects together. But how I organise them within that changes all the time. Do I sort history books by author or subject? Is a civil war history book military history, political history, British history, or its own genre? And so on. I keep changing my mind.

@theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic I hate airports. Not enormously fond of planes either. But particularly hate airports, everything about them appears to be designed as unpleasantly as possible.

I'm not saying I'll never fly again, because who knows what the future holds, but I certainly don't plan to ever fly again. Give me trains and ferries instead.

@actuallyautistic What are your thoughts on physical activity?

More specifically, do you find that it drains your energy more than most people? That you can't push yourself as hard as others? Or, put another way, that you need more rest and recovery time than most people?

Almost two years ago, I tried Couch to 5K. I made it to week five, then burned out and stopped because it so thoroughly drained every bit of energy I had.

I remember being so puzzled and confused about it. I remember thinking, what's wrong with me? I'm eating well. I'm eating enough. I'm getting enough sleep. I'm resting on my off days. I'm not extraordinarily out of shape and I was keeping up with the program well enough until the fifth week.

In retrospect, I'm wondering if it was an Autistic energy management problem, and I'm curious about others' experiences with C25K and other physical activity programs.

RolloTreadway ,
@RolloTreadway@beige.party avatar

@dave @actuallyautistic I've never tried couch to 5k or anything like that, because I know myself and it's not something I'd want to do at all.

But generally yes, absolutely. I hate exercise, I have to force myself to do enough to remain moderately healthy, and a big reason is that it swallows all my spoons and drains... whatever it is in my brain that allows me to maintain some kind of emotional balance.

• very high pitch sound
• very loud sound
• sock toe seams
• shirt wrist cuffs
• wrist watches
• in ear buds & plugs
• over ear head phones (but not as bad)
• wool clothing
• my whiskers
• my ear hair
• my nose hair
• background noise when I'm trying to hear
• very bright light

• artificial light
• rapidly blinking light
• repetitive sounds

What are yours?

@actuallyautistic

18+ RolloTreadway ,
@RolloTreadway@beige.party avatar

@JeremyMallin @actuallyautistic A few of mine that spring to mind:

The glossy paper envelopes that a lot of junk mail comes in. I have to handle it with gloves on.

Stickiness. One reason I stopped making bread by hand and bought a machine is that sticky dough feels sickening.

A certain type of uPVC door/window frame. I don't know exactly what it is but it's horrifying to touch.

In fact, most kinds of plastic-based door/window frames if I touch them with my fingernails. Most are okay for touching with my skin but nail contact is unbearable.

Pretty much all fake meats. I really want to eat fake meat so I keep trying new ones when they get invented. But so far the texture has been unmanageable on everything I've tried.

Similarly, mushrooms are a struggle unless they're cut very thin.

Jewellery. I absolutely hate wearing jewellery. Or coming into contact with anyone else's.

Hurrah... good sense breaks out in the as the 'Waitrose of the North', Booths begins to get rid of self-service check-outs.

Given the price premium at Booths, we (the customers) want the social interaction with staff at the checkouts, not be told to 'scan & bag'!

More importantly, not only do checkouts provide regular local employment, they are also for many semi-isolated shoppers a key bit of rare social interaction... so a welcome reverse!

@theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic To an extent. I always keep an eye on how much fruit and veg I'm eating, because of an extensive family history of bowel cancer, and making sure I eat lots of plants helps reduce the risk.
