Rolando ,

Show up with a box of donuts.

“Hey, look what I got for us to eat while looking at that tape!”

“Oh, I don’t think those donuts will last more than ten minutes here!”

“No problem, I know a way that won’t take that long…”

Rolando ,

Can you convert that to Unix time? (seconds since Jan 1 1970).

Rolando ,

But if there’s none that’s even better.

“The loser of a knife fight dies on the street. The winner dies in the ambulance.”

Why is everything in consumer / American life so fucking shitty now - and companies literally just say 'oh bc profit margins' and we're now expected to swallow that and sympathize?

like I went to taco bell and they didn’t even have napkins out. they had the other stuff just no napkins, I assume because some fucking ghoul noticed people liked taking them for their cars so now we just don’t get napkins! so they can save $100 per quarter rather than provide the barest minimum quality of life features.

Rolando ,

Taco Bell will just put out a “napkin tipping” jar and blame lack of tips for not providing napkins.

Rolando ,

It was hilarious, keep doing it that way lel. Also, name the file “made_with_memetic.png”

Rolando ,

This is a lie! You are not in a coma. Whatever you do, do NOT stare into a mirror for more than five seconds!

Rolando ,

you can only focus on about 10 percent of what you actually see in front of you,

I read about this when I was in high school and it freaked me out because I convinced myself that there were Cthulhu-like eldritch abominations inhabiting the spaces I could not see RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME and I couldn’t concentrate on school for the rest of the day.

Rolando ,

You should read Blindsight by Peter Watts.

Yeah, when I read that book I was like: this reminds me of that time I freaked out in high school!

I admire the fact that the author put it online for free, and it’s a pretty good book, but it could have been better… Watts could have taken all those ideas about consciousness and humanity and produced something like 1984 or Catch-22 that embodies ideas that might otherwise get lost in abstractions. Unfortunately the ideas all get a little muddled.

Rolando ,

Well, this conversation inspired me to finally read The Colonel, which reminded me of how great some of Watts’ ideas could be. Guess I’ll have to get a copy of Echopaxia next.

Rolando ,

I think if you’ve already read Echopraxia then The Colonel won’t tell you much new, it’s more like a transition between the two novels.

Rolando ,

So use Chrome for that work, and Firefox plus an adblocker for everything else.

    What nonsense.

Stamp collecting is obviously the right place to argue about Linux instead.

    Rolando ,

Learning curve is huge compared to other social media

The sad thing is, is not really that more complicated, it’s just got a bumpy on-ramp. join-lemmy.org is a lot better than it used to be, but it’s still got this anxiety-producing step where you have to select a home server.

    Rolando , (edited )

if there was some kind of database or reference for instances and the communities they have, i

    well, theres this: browse.feddit.de

    edit: also this: lemmyverse.net/communities

    Rolando ,
    Rolando ,

It’s worth noting that Lemmy only had around 1000 active users for the first half of 2023. (Kbin had fewer than 40 active users until May 2023!) Currently Lemmy + Kbin have about 38,000 active users.

That’s the reality of where we are. A quiet rural village that turned into a boom town, and now is finding a new normal.

    Rolando ,

I think “the good ending” looks something like that.

We aren’t beholden to stockholders, so we don’t need perpetual growth. We aren’t driven by an egomaniacal CEO so we don’t need to be the biggest social network around. We just need to find our equilibrium.

    Rolando ,

Check whether or not your friends are amused and delighted. That should give you a hint.

    Rolando ,

It’s not a meme, it’s more like a national anthem.

    Rolando ,

I thought this was like the Matrix, it gives you that ability.

    Rolando ,

    Ok wiseguy:

    • hold 8 inch icicle up to someone’s head
    • teleport 7 inches forward
    • "we can’t figure out what killed em!"
    Rolando ,
    Rolando ,
    • steal corpse of Albert Einstein
    • hook it up to exoskeleton
    • make it run E=mc^2^ miles per hour
    • take the pill

    Problem?

What Lemmy communities would you like to share that we may not know about?

I’m noticing an influx of Reddit users today, maybe revolving around their weird bug they had today. I know this question pops up semi regularly, but for those just getting their foot in the door maybe we can help show them what else is out here on the Fediverse to help them get started....

    Rolando ,

gotta promote !gothindustrial for industrial, goth, and adjacent music styles!?!!

    Rolando ,

The graphic novel was revolutionary when it came out in the late 80s. For a comic book it’s still extremely good, if you like character-based stories.

    Rolando ,

Wait, if a creator deletes their account, then their communities are deleted?

That’s kind of alarming for communities with absent mods. They could come back at any time just to leave.

    Rolando ,

aaah! hm… do you happen to know if it’s possible for the server admin to change the owner of a community?

    Rolando ,

It’s okay for things to be over.

False. Mediocre content still sells, and it is literally illegal for the company to not produce profit for the shareholders.

    Rolando ,

    Oh yeah, I agree!

    Rolando ,

You do this, but plot twist: the button makes the button-pushing machine more intelligent, and it starts to plan your downfall…

    Rolando ,

They’re just trying to trick you into not pushing the button, so that when they press the button they’ll outwit you.

    Rolando ,

That’s true! You have nothing to worry about. The magic button is not making the button-pushing machine smarter by adding circuits which make it smarter, which enable it to plan, which enable it to communicate. You have nothing to worry about, YOU are getting smarter… you’re getting smarter… you’re getting smarter…

    Rolando ,

You’re only making it worse for yourself!

    Rolando ,

    Contemplating this, they achieved enlightenment.

    Rolando ,

Oh yeah that’s a great community, it was pretty lively til @Arotrios disappeared a couple weeks ago, I hope they all right.

    Rolando ,
    Rolando ,

Hmmm… I haven’t posted a NaNoGenMo “intent to participate” yet… How about you?

    Rolando ,

Oh, I hope your commitments don’t get too stressful!

If you ever want to learn to code, NaNoGenMo is a good excuse to do so!

    Rolando ,

Nah, learning to code something that prints out a novel-length piece of text is easy. Just find an interactive tutorial like learnpython.org.

For example here’s how to print things.

Here’s how to print things multiple times. So now you can print a string several thousand times to make a novel-length text.

My cousin did NaNoGenMo when they were 14, they basically just had a list of names, a list of verbs, and a list of adverbs and the text was several thousand iterations of “NAME VERB ADVERB.” I think they used a free replit account, but they might have locally installed python. DM me if you get stuck.
