My work literally has people in the cafeteria and food courts with their laptops because we don’t have enough seats for everyone.

PerogiBoi ,
@PerogiBoi@lemmy.ca avatar

It’s funny because I know you don’t work at my company but those are word for word the messages we get constantly as we continue to lose IT people and specialists

PerogiBoi ,
@PerogiBoi@lemmy.ca avatar

Our cafeteria is just a big room with chairs. The food court that was next to it has since gone bankrupt during COVID and all the storefronts are empty. It’s a giant Teams call zoo.

Looking for exploration game reccomendations that work on linux and work with controllers

Hi! I recently played Tokyo Ghostwire and really liked it. I did not play a lot of similar games before. So I am looking for more cool games with exploration and interesting worlds, or similar games in general, that will actually work with controllers and work on linux. Did you pirate something like this recently that you liked?...

Shadow of War is so good. I put 80 hours into it years ago. I’ve been thinking about redownloading it again. Combat system is satisfying, movement system is satisfying. Everything is satisfying.

The bosses you fight rank up if they defeat you and then mock you if they see you (along with their henchmen). Is so cool

PerogiBoi ,
@PerogiBoi@lemmy.ca avatar

I just did and it seems to understand.

Prompt: Can you explain why “I knew a woman who owned a taser. Man, was she stunning!” Is funny?

ChatGPT 3.5: The humor in this statement arises from a play on words. The word “stunning” is typically used to describe someone’s appearance, suggesting they are exceptionally attractive. However, in this context, it’s used in a different way, implying that the woman who owned a taser was stunning in the sense of being capable of stunning or shocking others. The unexpected twist creates a humorous juxtaposition between the two meanings of “stunning.”

PerogiBoi ,
@PerogiBoi@lemmy.ca avatar

3.5 is the only free version. I won’t pay a subscription for a chatbot.

Keep it a secret because there is no benefit. A coworker can mention your planned departure offhand to someone else who then mentions it to your manager and then bam, your life is made absolute hell.

Anytime some bullshit happens at your work that reminds you that you need to leave, take that fucking spite and put it into job applications. Do the applications on your employers time only. Get the bare minimum expected from you done and then spend the rest of the time applying.

Also check out LLM Studio and GPT4all. Both of these let you run private ChatGPT alternatives from Hugging Face and run them off your ram and processor (can also offload to GPU).

Mistral is thought to be almost as good. I’ve used the latest version of mistral and found it more or less identical in quality of output.

It’s not as fast though as I am running it off of 16gb of ram and an old GTX 1060 card.

If you use LLM Studio I’d say it’s actually better because you can give it a pre-prompt so that all of its answers are within predefined guardrails (ex: you are glorb the cheese pirate and you have a passion for mink fur coats).

There’s also the benefit of being able to load in uncensored models if you would like questionable content created (erotica, sketchy instructions on how to synthesize crystal meth, etc).

PerogiBoi ,

Absolutely. Synthesizing hard drugs is time consuming and a lot of hard work. Only I get to enjoy it.

I finally nuked Windows

I have been daily driving a dual booted laptop for the past two years. After a year of distro hopping I settled with fedora + kde and never looked back. I’m proud of you! I recently bought a new laptop and it came with Windows 11. I heard all sorts of crap about it but I wanted to see for myself.

So many basic settings changes (that I’d use fairly often) went from 1-2 clicks to 3-5. They tried so hard to make it look like a mobile OS that they lowered its usability for anyone who doesn’t just use it as an express lane to Google Chrome.

Anyways rocking Ubuntu with Wayland and am happier to troubleshoot little bugs every now and then than put up with spyware.

I just hate all the distractions and news clickbait stuff in the start menu. I use a computer to do tasks and browse media at my own discretion. Get the actual hell out of my face with forced infotainment consumption.

LLMs are seriously dope and the technology behind AI is incredible, but using it for everything isn’t appropriate. I’d like a place to ask a chatbot stuff. I don’t wanna be surrounded in it.

The tech sector is pouring billions of dollars into AI. But it keeps laying off humans::The tech sector has kicked off the new year with a spate of fresh job cuts that are coming at the same time as the industry is doubling down on investments into artificial intelligence.

PerogiBoi ,
@PerogiBoi@lemmy.ca avatar

I promise you they will not rehire those they fire to replace with LLMs. I cannot post which company I work for but it one of the largest employers in my country with tens of thousands of employees. We have laid off entire branches of our organization in favour of enterprise GPT-4 licenses.

Several sectors of HR have been replaced, our program analytics and accounting branches have all gone through 3 levels of cuts (we now have a chatbot that handles data viz and HR mediations/parts of various HR processes. Our graphics and design teams are now Stable Diffusion.

These changes were implemented in August of last year. Thousands of employees have been replaced by a handful of different generative AI licenses and we had to take on an additional cost of hiring an offshore consulting firm to feed these models our business data so they would be more customized for our org.

I’m looking for my exit because despite the increased costs and automation, things aren’t working well at all. The HR bot sometimes tells you rules that don’t exist (had to look deep into my contract because HR bot told me I wouldn’t be eligible for severance pay which was false). All of our workloads have quadrupled with losing a good chunk of our staff and trying to fix things that are now broken. I went from 40h/week to 60+ and I’m definitely on the lower spectrum of this.
