Is this the kind of study like when they injected aspartame into rats' brains in huge quantities and they got sick? Because this kind of overexposure isn't useful. The dose makes the poison and exposing cells to overwhelming amounts of anything will kill them.

To test what these plastics do to our bodies once they’re consumed, the team bathed human embryonic kidney cells in the plastic roughage shed by the baby-food containers. (The team chose this kind of cell because kidneys have so much contact with ingested plastic.) After two days of exposure to concentrated microplastics and nanoplastics, about 75 percent of the kidney cells died

Bathed. Concentrated. Two words that prove this won't be anywhere near reality. We need studies on how this affects people with real-world conditions. Not artificial conditions that are so far from reality that the effects observed are meaningless.

Those sound pretty different but the melody that keeps popping up is super familiar to me. I can't recall where I've heard it though.

Starlink has become the 'blood' of Ukraine's communication infrastructure, but officials are reportedly growing concerned about relying on Elon Musk's tech (www.businessinsider.com)

Ukraine’s digital minister has reported concerns about the country’s overreliance on Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite internet system amid the war with Russia, The New York Times reports.

Neato ,
@Neato@kbin.social avatar

Nationalize that shit. Imminent domain Starlink and pay Musk its value. Let him sue if he thinks it's not enough. It's not about the money, but having that important tech in the hands of a bureaucracy that will delay political maneuvers and temper tantrums alike from hindering the Ukrainian military.

It's not really how we fight anymore. Buuuut if you want to see protests to rival the 70s, try doing a general draft again.

The US Military will never do another draft. The issue with the draft is that it instantly galvanizes opinions of every single American. Right now with a volunteer army, most Americans don't have an immediate family member that's deployed abroad. But if you institute the draft, they will.

Everyone will have a brother, husband, son, father, uncle, cousin, nephew, etc that has been drafted. And there's really nothing like a close personal connection to drive people to be upset and show it publicly. An unpopular war would become an impossible war very fast with the near-instantaneous speed of communication the internet allows. It would allow angry people to organize in very large groups very fast. The protests would be massive and unending.

It will require you to be a billionaire, or a world leader. Most likely someone important or powerful will buy the patent and then keep it back for their cronies. They need their slaves workers to be ignorant and desperate. Living a lot longer means they gain more knowledge and have more incentive to ensure the remainder of their lives are lived well. Billionaires want people downtrodden enough that they will do anything to ensure food for their children.

It's possible a billionaire will give this to workers since it seems to improve productivity into older ages. Buuuut I'd bet dollars to doughnuts that receiving this drug is contingent on signing a contract to work for their mega corporation until retirement. Said retirement age will be pushed out as more usable lifespan is gained from this drug until you retire. Oh, no you don't get retirement benefits and most likely people receiving this drug can't participate in 401ks or similar retirement schemes since they will have an "unfair advantage" of having so much longer to accure interest that other workers simply can't compete! (but we're not going to limit user's stock trading because that's what the rich use, shhhh)

Neato ,
@Neato@kbin.social avatar

Don’t give them the satisfaction

You're asking someone being harassed and threatened to keep fighting and deal with it. It's not on the victim to beat their abusers. It's on society to stop the abusers. That town should be arresting the racists for harassment but since the cops are likely supporting the racists, an ACLU lawyer should be stepping in pro-bono to sue the shit out of these people/department. Unfortunately it's rarely that easy to affect systemic change.

Neato ,
@Neato@kbin.social avatar

In fucking Georgia. Why didn't they just name it "White Power Hills"?

Neato ,
@Neato@kbin.social avatar

How are they going to structure this? Castlevania felt easier since there was so little story baked-in. But Miyazaki specifically made Dark Souls games hard to parse because he was trying to recreate the effect of reading english fantasy novels when he wasn't fully fluent in english.

The story in Fromsoft games are specifically sparse, spread out and require interpretation to grasp more than the bare surface. Most of the NPCs that give you meaningful dialogue are somewhat hidden. If they play is straight like a normal show, it might not feel like Dark Souls. If they make it obtuse, it'll be hard for viewers to parse in a 6-12 hour series compared to the dozens of hours players get to think on it.

Neato ,
@Neato@kbin.social avatar

Vaati pretty much has a career because of Miyazaki's storytelling style. He's excellent.

Neato ,
@Neato@kbin.social avatar

That would be cool. There's a vast amount of time between when the Lords rose up and defeated the dragons and the decline we see in DS1. We don't even see the rise of the Dark Sign and start of undead plague, but the end of it when the world has mostly dealt with it and is slowly falling apart. The rise of the Dark Sign, fall of Artorias in Oolacile could all be really cool.

Xbox's biggest crisis right now isn't games. It's hardware. (Opinion - Jez Corden) (www.windowscentral.com)

"Today, PlayStation revealed that its PS5 has sold 40 million units. Microsoft doesn’t share hardware numbers typically, but court documents, math, and slides from an ID@Xbox in Brazil seem to suggest the Xbox Series X|S line-up is around 20-23 million units sold globally. That essentially puts the PS5 at a 2:1 advantage...

Neato ,
@Neato@kbin.social avatar

You're right. Hardware is close enough to parity to be irrelevant. The competition in the 2-party console market (Nintendo doesn't count, they're in a different league) is in exclusive titles. It's why the MS-Activision merger had so much focus on Call of Duty and such: MS will take all their new titles exclusive as soon as they can and that's what drives sales. People choose consoles based on what games they want to play, or what consoles the friends they play with use if there are cross-platform titles.

Neato ,
@Neato@kbin.social avatar

Xbox because it doesn't have exclusives appealing enough to make them pick it over the alternatives.

Soon. Their acquisition of Bethesda and now Activision will push a lot of in-demand titles to Xbox and PC going forward. They'll be a lot more "competitive" with Sony now.

Neato ,
@Neato@kbin.social avatar

Their management kind of sucks but that isn't rare in games publishing. Publisher make insane moves all the time. Unfortunately for MS, from your list only Halo is relevant and that has had rocky releases for quite a while. Now that they can sequester Bethesda and Activision games they can probably be hands-off and just wait for exclusive sales to come in.

Neato ,
@Neato@kbin.social avatar

Exactly. Nintendo has targeted game styles that are largely being shared by smaller developers. AAA devs pretty much have to push visual boundaries in order to sell consoles while Nintendo focuses on whatever new major feature their newest console has (Wii: motion, WiiU: semi-handheld, Switch: hybrid handheld). Nintendo hasn't tried to compete with the big consoles at least since Gamecube. And their focus on few, high-quality titles for first party series means they have nearly guaranteed success every console generation (actual guaranteed success with pokemon).

Neato ,
@Neato@kbin.social avatar

To give more context, last week, the team behind TurboHUD released a version of this overlay tool/mod for Diablo 4. TurboHUD helps keeping track of your progression, your performance, and allows you to add quality-of-life improvements to the user interface. This mod was also available for Diablo 3, and a lot of gamers were using it.

A UX and progress tracker is getting people banned. How fragile is Blizzard? They're probably afraid this will somehow give people an unfair advantage for those leaderboards that won't exist for at least 6 more months.

Apple already shipped attestation on the web, and we barely noticed (httptoolkit.com)

Apple has deployed a system called Private Access Tokens that allows web servers to verify if a device is legitimate before granting access. This works by having the browser request a signed token from Apple proving the device is approved. While this currently has limited impact due to Safari’s market share, there are concerns...

Neato ,
@Neato@kbin.social avatar

Expect corporations to be lazy. Just look at how every website handles cookies now. They could do it smartly, limit their cookie exposure, or only send the messages to IPs in the EU. But they just put an "accept all cookies or get out" OK box on your screen. And that's what they're going to do once attestation gets popular.

Sites will just require an attestation token and likely only accept ones from Safari and Chromium browsers since those are the ones pushing it. That will effectively make Firefox, Opera and other browsers incompatible with those websites. And once it catches on or becomes law somewhere, it'll be the entire internet. It's an extremely anticompetitive measure and it's internet-wide DRM. Fuck. that.

Neato ,
@Neato@kbin.social avatar

Yes. We need the numbers to be minimum bitrates and we need at least a 90% uptime for that minimum. If you could rely on your bandwidth to be a specific rate all the time you could pay for less and everyone could get more without more infrastructure upgrades.

Neato ,
@Neato@kbin.social avatar

I'm not surprised. Edge has it integrated already and it's annoying.

Disney doesn't need PR, goodwill or even a bit more money. They have all of those things that is needed for them to assert complete control. And that will bring them more power and money than anything else. It's the same strategy every company has been going for a while but it's very obvious with the internet companies now.

YT has control over online video, so it's cracking down anyone avoiding paying them. Reddit controls most text-based communities, so it's preventing the same. Google knows it's the overwhelming majority of browsers, so it's trying to inseminate the entire internet to prevent anyone from seeing anything it doesn't like, or pay them for.

Neato ,
@Neato@kbin.social avatar

I wonder what the effect would be if someone hacked him and leaked his game. You know, totally out of his control. He can't stop a malicious actor afterall...

There is no chance of balkinzation or secession of California unless the entire USA falls or splits. CA is the 5th largest economy in the world. That amount of wealth would never be allowed to leave. It'd make the entire South seceding look like a trial run.

Not that they'd really try without a dissolution of the Constitution first. They'd probably just start passing laws that ignore the Constitution and federal laws and then dare the fed to intervene. Would still need a massively weaker fed, though.

Neato ,
@Neato@kbin.social avatar

Yes. It's the old style. Before they had the tech for the under seat ones. Some didn't even have fountains and you'd fill it up and wash your ass with your hands.

Neato ,
@Neato@kbin.social avatar

Yeah. Playing and recording uses the same mechanism in a VCR. Writing uses a different method but it would be on the second tape. Unless you tried to record over the tape which I don't think works on non-recordable anyways.

Can you get well paying coding jobs with upward mobility without at least a BA in CS?

Neato ,
@Neato@kbin.social avatar

It's not that. We can already feed everyone in the world, it's just not profitable to do so.

And the above comic doesn't show overpopulation. It shows a terrible urbanization and surburbanization scheme. There's a lot of things we could mandate to make it better.

  1. Underground telephone and power lines. Also prevents outages during storms. Gets rid of a lot of the upper noise.
  2. Better lights. Prevents light pollution by having most light go downward.
  3. Structure cities and town centers around walking. This means fewer roads and parking lots and more restaurants and stores.
  4. Increase public transport. #3 means everyone will drive TO the city then walk. This will prevent the driving to.
  5. More green spaces. Within cities and towns there should be a lot more vegetation. Corner green spaces, rooftop gardens, parks, etc.
  6. Denser housing in cities. This means people can go up instead of out. Prevents urban sprawl and keeps city neighborhoods walkable.

There's probably a lot more but a big problem with American design is that it was almost all co-opted by the automobile industry 100-150 years ago. We used to have public transport within and to cities. But their lobbying created mostly sprawling suburban hellscapes like you see above. And all the rich people live in beautifully manicured neighborhoods so they care nothing for how it looks.

Neato ,

But are investors this stupid? Who invests in an IPO without doing research on the company's activities? If they check the internet and it's countless articles about how their users and moderators are pissed and leaving, why would anyone think it's going to be profitable?

YSK that a lot of common questions/complaints about Lemmy are presently answered by kbin (kbin.social)

This is not an attempt to convert Lemmy users, nor is it a slight on Lemmy. I'm sure there are plenty of reasons why Lemmy works better for some, and I love the fact that we not only have multiple choices, but multiple choices that allow us to interact with each other regardless! It's amazing. Lemmy is great, no shade....

You don't like capitalism because you're the mark. Capitalism is for capitalists. Capitalists own capital. The vast, vast majority of the world, even in wealthy countries don't own any capital. They own possessions, which is different. Capitalists have just spent capital confusing people into thinking they should like it.
