Panna cotta with raspberry sauce (lemmy.world)

Used this recipe for the panna cotta (though I did fudge the numbers on the gelatin and just used the whole packet since there wasn’t really enough to save) and this recipe for the raspberry sauce. She uses sour cream in her recipe which I’ve never heard of, I might try it next time but for right now I just wanted the basic...

Some Mastodon apps are build different than others - seeing everything in the fediverse

So I know that there are some limitations for federation, especially if you are on a smaller instance. On Mastodon I stumble upon this problem on a daily basis. Here is an example. My account is on a smaller local instance (social.cologne) and in the following picture is a post of Eugen Rochko (which I follow):...

MysticKetchup ,

I can only assume that the issue is that they’re trying to reduce the number of calls to the original instance. If you’re just scrolling by, you only see the post that’s cached on your own server, and it doesn’t communicate with the original instance until you open the post. Making it so that every time some scrolls by a post it contacts the original instance sounds like it massively increases the amount of traffic to the original instance which goes against the idea of software that supports smaller, self or community hosted servers.

MysticKetchup ,

And then they’ll cancel anything they didn’t spam the front page with and blame it on low viewership

MysticKetchup ,

Pixelfed is the federated alternative, not sure if it’s open source though

MysticKetchup ,

Boy this legally distinct gothic horror themed game that shares nothing in common with a popular Sony franchise sure looks like a fun time

MysticKetchup OP , (edited )

Well, I don’t, this was just luck. These all came from a tree near my apartment that my girlfriend spotted. She noticed them when they were unripe and went out as soon as they were ready but she definitely had competition from the birds.

Edit: she mentioned that the tree was near the road by a bus stop, so the traffic may have kept them from eating too many of them

MysticKetchup OP ,

This was my first time trying mulberries and I can say I’m now a fan! Sounds like you had good eating back then :)

What are some eras of gaming that you've stopped feeling nostalgic for? (kbin.social)

As I've gotten older as a player, I have found myself dropping some eras of gaming that I used to be nostalgic for. One of them is the 8-bit era, the NES days. I have played some of the best that system had to offer and I will never say that system didn't have any good games....

MysticKetchup ,

Not so much as stopped feeling nostalgic for, but realizing that there weren’t as many great games available as I thought that haven’t had better successors or remakes. And for Nintendo consoles, non-Nintendo games that stand the test of time are difficult to find outside of a few franchises that usually have more modern versions on Switch.

We are just spoiled for choice these days when it comes to games, especially with indie games. And indies these days often have better UX than most mainstream games back then.

MysticKetchup ,

Because those pages had information that wasn’t on the new pages?

Just from my own experience, WotC migrated the Magic the Gathering site to a new one, and while some articles were brought over there were a whole lot of stories, strategies and event coverage that were lost or are only available thanks to Archive.org

Squarespace to Go Private in $6.9B All-Cash Transaction with Permira (investors.squarespace.com)

Stockholders will receive $44.00 per share in cash, which represents a premium of 29% over the 90-day volume weighted average trading price of $34.09 Squarespace, Inc. (NYSE: SQSP ), the design-driven platform helping entrepreneurs build brands and businesses online, today announced that it has entered into a definitive...

MysticKetchup ,

What’s the benefit of going private for a company that’s owned by private equity? Like from a regular standpoint, not being subjected to the constant growth demands of shareholders is good, but I wouldn’t think private equity cares about that as long as they’re making money

MysticKetchup ,

Looks delightful, makes me want to eat outside in the nice spring weather here. How was making the mozzarella? I’m seriously considering it with how hard it is to find the good stuff here (and how expensive it is when I do get my hands on it)

MysticKetchup ,

Being entitled to equal rights doesn’t mean they actually get them. It also doesn’t account for the fact that many Palestinians are denied citizenship or remain in occupied territories controlled by Israel and explicitly not guaranteed equal rights

The comprehensive report, Israel’s Apartheid against Palestinians: Cruel System of Domination and Crime against Humanity, sets out how massive seizures of Palestinian land and property, unlawful killings, forcible transfer, drastic movement restrictions, and the denial of nationality and citizenship to Palestinians are all components of a system which amounts to apartheid under international law. This system is maintained by violations which Amnesty International found to constitute apartheid as a crime against humanity, as defined in the Rome Statute and Apartheid Convention.

That’s basically what most tech companies are trying to optimize these days, the ability to make money off of other people’s work. It’s why they’re so hyped about trying to use AI to replace the very workers it’s trained on.

MysticKetchup ,

It’s not pixel art, but does Muramasa: The Demon Blade count?

Not sure if it’s RPG-y enough, but Katana Zero does sort of match that kind of style

MysticKetchup ,

Oh I see, so more horizontal movement style games? Maybe Moon Hunters?

I feel like a lot of stuff like that is probably going to fall into the roguelike category. But as a fan of RPGs roguelikes always bug me because I need progression. Soulslikes such as Hunt the Night or Duel Corp might be better, but based on your description that’s probably too much on the action side and not enough on the rpg side

MysticKetchup ,

But simply knowing the right words to say in response to a moral conundrum isn’t the same as having an innate understanding of what makes something moral. The researchers also reference a previous study showing that criminal psychopaths can distinguish between different types of social and moral transgressions, even as they don’t respect those differences in their lives. The researchers extend the psychopath analogy by noting that the AI was judged as more rational and intelligent than humans but not more emotional or compassionate.

This brings about worries that an AI might just be “convincingly bullshitting” about morality in the same way it can about many other topics without any signs of real understanding or moral judgment. That could lead to situations where humans trust an LLM’s moral evaluations even if and when that AI hallucinates “inaccurate or unhelpful moral explanations and advice.”

Despite the results, or maybe because of them, the researchers urge more study and caution in how LLMs might be used for judging moral situations. “If people regard these AIs as more virtuous and more trustworthy, as they did in our study, they might uncritically accept and act upon questionable advice,” they write.

Great, so the headline of the article directly feeds into the issue the scientists are warning about when it comes to public perception of AI morality

MysticKetchup ,

God they just rebranded trickle-down-economics

MysticKetchup ,

Want to feel older? Since the N64, we’ve had the GameCube, Wii, Wii U and Switch. The latter of which has been out for 7 years already and is probably going to be replaced soon.

MysticKetchup ,

I feel the same about a lot of Fediverse apps right now. They’re kinda just coasting on the fact that they’re not big enough for most spammers to care about. But they need to put in solid defenses and moderation tools before that happens

MysticKetchup ,

Like what even is a legitimate use case for these? It just seems tailor made for either misinformation or pointless memes, neither of which seem like a good sales pitch

MysticKetchup ,

We’ve already recreated dead actors or older actors whole cloth with VFX. Plus it still seems like a niche use case for something that can be done by VFX artists that can also do way more

Reddit Is Taking Over Google (tech.slashdot.org)

Reddit, Quora, and other internet forums that have climbed up through the traditional set of Google links. Data analysis from Semrush, which predicts traffic based on search ranking, shows that traffic to Reddit has climbed at an impressive clip since August 2023. Semrush estimated that Reddit had over 132 million visitors in...

MysticKetchup ,

Google has been killing those off for a while. Nowadays it’s hard to find anything that isn’t just the copy-pasted SEO bait non-articles covered in ads

MysticKetchup ,

Worse, since if you tip through the game you’re almost certainly just giving that money to the execs

MysticKetchup OP ,

Yeah sorry, I went with the auto generated title but probably should have done some editing on it for clarity. I think the game looks neat but it does feel like the site was trying to hit as many SEO words as possible

MysticKetchup ,

Dang those are pretty. It’s kinda sad how little we get big, expansive pixel art environments these days

MysticKetchup ,

Shame they never released VII, VIII and IX for the DS. At the very least, the 3DS would have been able to handle all the way up to the PS2 games but SE just didn’t seem interested in remakes on Nintendo consoles anymore for whatever reason.

MysticKetchup ,

Sounds really cool, though still very light on details. I also hope it’s playable solo since it feels so hard to get a group of 4 people together as a working adult

MysticKetchup ,

Haha yeah, I’m just getting to a point where I’m old and don’t want to make new accounts for things

MysticKetchup ,

The issue is that ads these days are largely less about actually informing people about a product and more about a well-known brand keeping its market dominance. At this point, there’s basically no one who doesn’t know about McDonald’s or Coke but they still advertise heavily because they want to constantly be on people’s minds. They’re not really concerned about a return on their advertising investment as long as they’re still maintaining their position.

MysticKetchup ,

No, just that sales is probably not the only metric they’re looking at when buying ads. It’s about maintaining their brand image too.

We saw this with Amazon when a bunch of news articles about their union busting and poor work conditions were breaking. There were tons of ads from Amazon about how much people love working there and how great it is. They knew they needed to influence their public image and advertising is how they do it.

“We will coup whoever we want!” -Elon Musk

MysticKetchup ,

Well feeling less bad about switching to a OnePlus now

MysticKetchup ,

So Federation lets you move your data, but that’s it? It still has global moderation and from what it sounds like all accounts are still dependent on the original BlueSky server to login. So if it goes down, doesn’t that just take all servers with it?

MysticKetchup ,

So is there an “AI is going just great” website yet like there is for Web3?

MysticKetchup ,
  1. You’re literally commenting on an article about AI image generation having to be shut down because it’s not going well
  2. Pets.com also advertised at the Super Bowl, it doesn’t mean much other than spending a lot of money
MysticKetchup ,

TL;DR: right-wing hand-wringing over the app “turning the kids trans and lowering their IQ”

The author also has articles defending Israel and complaining about “woke ideology” if you need any more reason to skip it

MysticKetchup ,

I did read the full article and am not convinced.

  1. The entire thing is predicated on the idea that TikTok is a feminizing, intelligence-destroying superweapon that can single handedly bring down civilizations (the only evidence cited are spurious correlations that treat IQ as a real science)
  2. Even if you take that as the average view of the US in China, it’s still a leap to say they are, either actively or passively, planning the downfall of the US when the two countries are so entwined. It’s just more US vs China fearmongering
  3. While he does say that TikTok needs to be regulated, nowhere does he advocate for larger scale curtailing of capitalism, and in fact ties all of his negative authoritarian points to socialism. It’s singling out TikTok for the larger sins of an unregulated tech industry
MysticKetchup ,

I’m convinced that it’s purposeful sabotage on Apple’s part because if there’s one Android user in a group chat iMessage fucks up images/videos/effects for all recipients. So being the lone Android holdout gets you pressured to switch

MysticKetchup ,

That’s to be expected. What remains to be seen is how many of them will stick around after the initial surge.

MysticKetchup ,

I’ve been happily using Mastodon but most of the users I followed on the old site went to BlueSky instead. There’s no other way to keep up with them without it, and it sure as hell is better than Twitter these days

MysticKetchup ,

CEO pay is so ridiculous, there’s obviously no way they’re going to self regulate so we need to either tie it to worker pay/well-being or put it under the control of their employees
