You missed one: Chasing a bigger high.

When people start dying of opioid overdoses, addicts tend to seek those suppliers out.

Yes.

Venus fly traps are not animals.

Moobythegoldensock ,

I think you need to look up the definition of of “vegan.” It’s not based on what your food eats: you can’t call eating a grass-fed cow “vegan.”

Fungi is also not animals.

Moobythegoldensock ,

That’s not the definition of vegan. The definition of vegan is a person who abstains from animal products. Plants are not animal products.

Eating a venus flytrap is also removing a plant that eats animals.

Moobythegoldensock ,

Venus fly traps are not animal tested products. They are plants.

Moobythegoldensock ,

Venus flytraps aren’t products. They’re organisms.

You’re the one being obtuse. Killing a plant is not killing an animal. Killing a plant that eats animals is not humans doing something to an animal. It’s actually the opposite: it’s humans saving animals.

If you want to get that granular, whatever device you’re using to type your pedantic replies was made of parts that were shipped. At some point, the vehicle they were shipped on killed a bug. You caused way more animal deaths typing your replies to me than anyone ever did killing a venus flytrap, because killing a venus fly trap does not actually kill any animals.

And crafting a carefully targeted phishing email took a human team around 16 hours

Ummm what? Back in college, I used to budget 30-45 minutes a page for essays. What the hell are they writing that took a team of people 16 fucking hours for a few paragraphs of text?

The northmost, eastmost, and westmost states in the US are all the same state.

Middle Island, Canada is south of 26% of US states, and over half of US states are at least partially north of it.

Moobythegoldensock ,

Alaska is the north-most US state, and it goes so far west that it actually pokes into the eastern hemisphere.

Here’s a map for the Canada one.

The guy in the video did his math wrong.

And 80% gain gives you 1.8x. A 50% gain gives you 0.5x. When combining them, you multiply them, giving you 0.9x, which is a 10% loss with each set of 2 flips.

Try it yourself: $100 x 1.8 = $180. $180 x 0.5 = $90. So you start with $100 and end with $90.

Recommendations for OS on a rpi 4B (outside of RaspPiOS)

Quickly wondering what people recommend as OS for a rpi model 4b, outside of the RaspPiOS ofc. I want to use the RPI for all networking related stuff (dont worry its not using an sd-card). So PiHole, and I’ll also want to use it as my exit-node out of my Tailnet. I will also run ProtonVPN on it so that all my devices...

GOP’s Jim Jordan fails again on vote for House speaker as frustrated Republicans search for options (apnews.com)

Republican Rep. Jim Jordan failed again Wednesday on a crucial second ballot to become House speaker, but the hard-fighting ally of Donald Trump showed no signs of dropping out despite losing support from even more of his GOP colleagues....

Yes, theoretically. This happened when the Republicans replaced the Whigs in the mid-1800s, largely due to the Whigs refusing to take a stance on slavery.

It’s a bit unlikely at current, though. However, if the MAGA Republicans at some point declare themselves their own party, there could be a shakeup.

Moobythegoldensock ,

I think there are several exceptions to this. Sex scenes in general follow “show, don’t tell:” having a character simply do X is usually preferable to having a character say “I did X.”

Some examples off the top of my head:

  • The Terminator - It shows how the main character becomes pregnant with minimal exposition
  • Shoot ‘Em Up - It highlights the absurdity of the film, equates sex with gratuitous violence, and tells you about the characters
  • Sausage Party - it is an illustration of The Absurd in the wake of an existential crisis
  • Team America: World Police - It functions as shock humor that also satirizes other gratuitous sex scenes
  • Irreversible- There is simply no amount of dialogue that could illustrate the amount of horror and violence the scene conveys and bring about the proper emotional response from the audience
  • Jackie Brown - It shows how pathetic the main characters are
  • Tomcats - It creates a comedic moment when the timid librarian turns out to be a dominatrix
  • Trainspotting - The film compares the high from heroin to an orgasm, and the sex scene extends that metaphor and helps the audience empathize with the main character’s struggle
  • Requiem for a Dream - Shows how Jennifer Connelly’s character has hit rock bottom
Moobythegoldensock ,

Correct, just like the alien is not the main character in Alien and Predator is not the main character in Predator.

The first three boil down to, “If software that you need/want only develops for a specific OS, use that OS.”

They fueled the opioid crisis for profit, got caught, and now the courts are bailing them out of their debts

“We allege that Rite Aid filled hundreds of thousands of prescriptions that did not meet legal requirements,” said Associate Attorney General Vanita Gupta. “According to our complaint, Rite Aid’s pharmacists repeatedly filled prescriptions for controlled substances with obvious red flags, and Rite Aid intentionally deleted internal notes about suspicious prescribers. These practices opened the floodgates for millions of opioid pills and other controlled substances to flow illegally out of Rite Aid’s stores.”

No, it seems a lot of people just didn’t click with it for some reason. There are always a few people here or on reddit saying they hated it, and it seems like it’s more than the average movie.

I personally loved it, so I have a hard time seeing what people disliked about it.

Yes, the scene at the end of Act 2 is what hooked me on the series. It’s a shame they didn’t do something similar at the end of Act 1, because so many people stopped playing due to the slow start.

My most profound moment in those games was at the end of The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit. Even though it’s the smallest story in the games, that final dialogue put me through the floor.

The majority party should have no problem electing their own leader. It’s not the Democrats’ place to run the Republican party for them.

Moobythegoldensock ,

If that were true then the centrist Republicans would help the Democrats elect a Democratic speaker. But they want to pretend their party is two parties when it’s convenient and one party when it’s convenient.

Fuck ‘em. Let them sort out their own mess.

Moobythegoldensock ,

You don’t make your measures your targets.

Example:

“Our customers hate us. We will make our employees get a 10 on their surveys for each customer or we’ll punish them” makes the measure a target.

“Our customers hate us, so we’re going to change our shitty policies to be more consumer friendly and see how our customers respond” keeps the measure as a measure.

Looking to dip my toes into Linux for the first time. I have a 2016 Intel MacBook Pro with pretty solid specs collecting dust right now that I think I’m going to use. Research so far has indicated to me that the two best options for me are likely Mint or Elementary OS. Does anyone have any insight? Also open to other OS’s. I would consider myself decently tech savvy but I am not a programmer or anything. Comfortable dipping into the terminal when the need arises and all that.

@linux

Moobythegoldensock ,

Honestly, any general purpose distro will do fine. I’d watch a YouTube review of Elementary and Mint and see what you think. I’d also throw in Ubuntu and Fedora, as they run a more modern desktop that might be more interesting to you as a Mac user than Mint, which is Windows-like out of the box.

Keep in mind: choosing a distro is sort of like choosing your first car. It’s fine to have a taste, but don’t let the decision paralyze you, because 90% of learning to drive will be exactly the same regardless of what car you choose. Likewise, 90% of linux will be the same regardless of your distro.

2 years is plenty of time to see where linux support is. We should have a good idea by then of where gaming and streaming quality stand for the foreseeable future.

Most of my PCs will easily go to linux, the big question is whether to suck it up and upgrade my gaming rig to 11 or just switch everything to linux.

Moobythegoldensock ,

I don’t really play any anti-cheat multiplayer but I do play some AAA with DRM like Assassins Creed.

I’m fully comfortable with linux to the degree that I can start with a TTY and set up my own GUI with a window manager (though I prefer to just install a DE.)

Proton has been hit or miss with me on my laptop: sometimes the game won’t load, or it’ll load but the graphics will suck, or it’ll run nicely but all the good mods aren’t supported. That’s what I mean by seeing what the state of gaming is in 2 years: at that point Steam Deck and Proton should be pretty mature.

Outside of that, the Windows streaming apps support 4k but resolution is generally limited in the browser, though I suppose I could use my tv’s streaming apps. I’ve used my work software on my linux laptop so I know that’s a non-issue.

At this point, I don’t have a push to switch, but I’m not really excited for 11 and I might have to reinstall anyway to upgrade because apparently the Windows 10 install didn’t leave Windows 11 enough free space at the start of the disk or some bullshit. And if I have to reinstall anyway in 2 years, I’ll probably just do linux.

Moobythegoldensock ,

Yep, I’m aware. Though NVIDIA has been a little more willing to push kernel modules, so it might be closer to parity in 2025.

Both my laptop and desktop have NVIDIA cards.

I had a dream about windows and have decided to setup Linux on my laptop. What distro should I use?

I used Ubuntu once a few years ago but had compatability issues so I went back to windows. Not a great programmer but I’d like to learn. I’m not looking to do much gaming beyond DOOM2 and factorio. Mostly looking for privacy and a way to get back into programming (I have this pipe dream of learning Assembly). I’m not to...

Moobythegoldensock ,

Any general purpose distro will work well for you. As others have said, Ubuntu and Mint are the standard recommendations.

Moobythegoldensock ,

Start trying some of the open source apps on Windows. For example, try using LibreOffice for a bit and see how it compares to Microsoft Office. You may be surprised to find that the difference isn’t as big as you thought.

Moobythegoldensock ,

2025 is the year of the linux desktop!

Moobythegoldensock ,

Absolutely. Works great for printing or converting to pdf, though. I just export them to docx anyway and see what happens.

Moobythegoldensock ,

Personally, mine has TPM but Windows is complaining that it didn’t give itself enough space in the bootloader to upgrade itself to 11 and this is somehow my fault. I’m debating whether I’ll bother to try troubleshooting it when 10 goes EOL or just move my gaming PC to linux. I do like having at least one Windows machine around for compatibility but it’s getting too annoying to get caught up.

I’ve been using linux on my laptops and tablets for years so it wouldn’t be a huge hurdle for me to switch.

Moobythegoldensock ,

No. The best you can do is just pick someone you want to build a life with and work hard on it together.
